Epectase is a Paris duo that folds frantic tremolo-picked black metal into long-form suites of 70s prog, jazz-tinged interludes, and hazy krautrock electronics, sliding between shrieks, operatic cleans, and meditative ambient passages within a single track. DSKNT is a shadowy Swiss black/death metal project from Sion, Valais, formed in 2013 as the 'audial subdivision' of the DSKNT Industry recording studio and led by the presumed one-person mastermind Asknt. Since December 2016 vocals have been handled by Antiversum's singer, and the band's two albums for Sentient Ruin Laboratories — PhSPHR Entropy (2017) and Vacuum γ-Noise Transition (2021) — fuse dissonant, complex riffing with harsh noise and a slow, hypnotic drumming approach built around themes of cosmic void and entropy.

French duo led by multi-instrumentalist Slo (guitars/drums/vocals/keys) with bassist Camille Giraudeau, playing avant-garde/progressive post-black metal descended from Emperor, Ulver, Borknagar and Ved Buens Ende. After a 12-year gap between albums, 2025's Ruina Draconis (I, Voidhanger) piles on 'extremely layered', ambient-electronic interludes between bursts of blackened violence. Giraudeau's parallel work in Dødheimsgard's touring lineup, Doedsmaghird, Stagnant Waters and Void ties Smohalla directly into the same avant-black/noise diaspora.

Atrorum is a two-person avant-garde/progressive black metal project from Munich, Germany, formed in 1998 by vatroS (guitars, bass, clean vocals, programming) and umbrA (vocals, keyboards, programming). Across three albums on Apathia Records — most notably 2015's Structurae — the band folds symphonic black and death metal into gothic organ, choir, cabaret, funeral-doom, jazz, and industrial-electronic passages, alternating harsh and clean vocals delivered in French, German, and English.

Bethlehem are a German black/doom band formed in Grevenbroich in 1991 by Jürgen Bartsch and Klaus Matton. Their 1994 debut Dark Metal gave an entire subgenre its name, welding black metal's tremolo and shriek to doom's crawl plus violin, piano and keyboard for a uniquely desolate, avant-garde atmosphere. Later records pushed further into Suicidal/Depressive Black Metal territory and, briefly, electronic Neue Deutsche Härte.

Hasard is a French dissonant/avant-garde black metal project by the musician Hazard, an offshoot of his prior orchestral/classical one-man project Les Chants du Hasard. Debut album Malivore (I, Voidhanger Records, 2023) inverts that project's formula, building chaotic, dissonant black metal shot through with classical/orchestral flourishes, piano guest work from John Steven Morgan of Wreche, and comparisons to early Ævangelist, Abyssal and Blut Aus Nord. A follow-up, Abgnose, was released in 2025, also on I, Voidhanger.

Oranssi Pazuzu is a Finnish psychedelic black metal band formed in 2007 in Tampere. Their sound fuses black metal with psychedelic rock, space rock, krautrock, dark ambient and electronic textures into a hypnotic, boundary-dissolving whole, a synthesis critics have struggled to categorize. Across six studio albums, from Muukalainen puhuu (2009) to the acclaimed Muuntautuja (2024), they have become one of the most celebrated exports of Finland's experimental heavy underground.

Norwegian avant-garde project (1998-2006) from Notodden founded by Ihsahn (Emperor), his wife Ihriel and her brother Lord PZ, on their own Mnemosyne Productions. It began as symphonic avant-garde extreme metal and drifted toward classical-tinged avant-garde rock full of twisted synths, electronics, operatic female vocals and Ihsahn's shrieks. Lost in Reverie (2004) is regarded as a landmark of the genre-transcending Norwegian avant-garde.
