Vampillia
Japan · formed 2005 · last active 2022
Vampillia is a Japanese 'brutal orchestra' from Osaka, a roughly ten-piece ensemble of twin guitars, violin, piano, dual drummers and a DJ built around vocalist Possession Mongoloid, fusing black metal, noise, classical and ambient into narrative-structured albums. The band's collaborator list runs unusually deep for an underground act: they released the full-length 'xoroAHbin' with The Body in 2017, recruited Mayhem/Sunn O))) vocalist Attila Csihar for their 2013 single 'Circle', and are one of the core constituent acts of the black-metal/techno project Violent Magic Orchestra.

Kollektiv Raumordnung is a German multimedia art collective led by Moritz Fabian, involving 20+ collaborators across music, writing, photography, and visual art. Their debut album 'Stewards of Eon' (Dec. 2025, Fucking Kill Records/Cultkill Music) merges war metal, dark ambient, opera, power electronics, and psytrance into a single sci-fi concept release accompanied by a graphic novel, positioned as a 'twin-entity' sharing a fictional universe with the German doom act Eremit.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 24Oranssi PazuzuBlackTechnicalTheatrical
Oranssi Pazuzu is a Finnish psychedelic black metal band formed in 2007 in Tampere. Their sound fuses black metal with psychedelic rock, space rock, krautrock, dark ambient and electronic textures into a hypnotic, boundary-dissolving whole, a synthesis critics have struggled to categorize. Across six studio albums, from Muukalainen puhuu (2009) to the acclaimed Muuntautuja (2024), they have become one of the most celebrated exports of Finland's experimental heavy underground.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 25Non ServiamBlackTheatricalGlitch
Non Serviam is an anonymous experimental black metal collective from Paris, France, centered on songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Void alongside vocalist-harpsichordist Moon. Tagged 'Baroqueviolence,' their music folds industrial noise, baroque instrumentation (harpsichord, spinet, accordion), and grindcore/doom-sludge influences into a black metal core, citing Neurosis, Godflesh, Autechre and Joy Division among its touchstones. Their 2026 album La Lune Dont Mon Âme Est Pleine features a guest vocal turn from Mirai Kawashima of Sigh.
- UnaffiliatedEI 23GenevieveBlackTechnicalAmbient
A Baltimore black/death outfit active since 2013 that Metal Injection dubbed 'unconventional black metal freaks' — warped, noise-caked riffing in a Portal-adjacent vein, broken up by drone-soaked, Middle-Eastern-tinted instrumental interludes and horror-theatrical atmosphere. Their 2023 LP 'Akratic Parasitism' folds in 90s math-rock angularity (Slint, Rodan) alongside early Today Is The Day-style psychosis, all self-released through Bandcamp on their own terms.
- Dissonant blackEI 23Hex ArcanaBlackTechnicalTheatrical
Hex Arcana is an international avant-garde/black metal project based in Tampere, Finland, led by American multi-instrumentalist Matron Thorn (also of Ævangelist and Præternatura) with vocalist Frater A.A. and Erethe Arashiel on vocals/artwork. The project operated 2018-2020 as Devil Worshipper before adopting the Hex Arcana name, fusing dissonant black metal with industrial textures, doom, and occult theatrics for I, Voidhanger Records. The 2022 album 'Eternally Yours' was mixed and mastered by Jeremie Bezier of Emptiness.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 19MayhemBlackTechnicalTheatrical
Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in Oslo in 1984, and one of the founding architects of the Norwegian black metal scene whose cold, abrasive sound shaped the entire genre. Their debut full-length De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) — completed amid the deaths of vocalist Dead and guitarist/founder Euronymous — remains a defining record, and its signature song "Freezing Moon" a black metal touchstone. The long-running lineup pairs founding bassist Necrobutcher and drummer Hellhammer with Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar, whose otherworldly, ritualistic delivery also anchors the drone-metal group Sunn O))).
- UnaffiliatedEI 23A Forest of StarsBlackTheatricalTechnical
A Forest of Stars is a British avant-garde black metal band formed 2007 in Leeds, wrapping tremolo black metal in folk instrumentation (violin, flute), psychedelia and an elaborate Victorian 'Gentlemen's Club' concept set in 1898. Across five albums (debut The Corpse of Rebirth, 2008; through Grave Mounds and Grave Mistakes, 2018, on Lupus Lounge) they range from 'blistering black metal fury' to 'opium dreamscapes.' Spoken narration, steampunk pseudonyms and hand-built artwork make the theatrical framing central.
- UnaffiliatedEI 19GardenjiaTechnicalBlackTheatrical
Gardenjia is a Brindisi, Italy act formed in 2010 that started in djent/experimental territory before drifting into cinematic, atonal experimental black metal steeped in film and anime scores; 2018's Machina Dei explicitly quotes Ghost in the Shell and reworks Franz Liszt. Built around Raffaele Galasso with Giuseppe Miglietta and Antonio Martire, the trio remains unsigned and self-releases via Bandcamp.
- UnaffiliatedEI 13BiesyBlackTechnicalAmbient
Biesy is a Kraków trio formed in 2014 around guitarist/bassist PR, joined by vocalist Stawrogin (also of Odraza, Totenmesse) and drummer MP (also of Outre), taking their concept from Dostoevsky's Demons and the alienation of urban life. Their 2017 debut Noc Lekkich Obyczajów (Third Eye Temple) delivers dissonant, disjointed black/death riffing compared to Ulcerate, Deathspell Omega, Immolation and Gorguts. The 2020 follow-up Transsatanizm (Godz ov War Productions) pushed further into avant-garde territory, layering industrial synths and looping electro beats over blackened riffs, described by reviewers as 'avangardish, industrial-infused post-rock/post-black.'
- Southern Lord / droneEI 26Runhild GammelsæterTheatricalAmbientTechnical
Runhild Gammelsæter is a Norwegian vocalist who is also a professional biologist holding a Ph.D. in cell physiology. She first drew notice fronting the American doom band Thorr's Hammer, which she joined at 17 alongside Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, and later co-formed the duo/trio Khlyst with James Plotkin. Her 2008 solo debut Amplicon (Utech Records) is built almost entirely from her own voice, warped with effects, with each track founded on a scientific, largely biologic theme conceived as a soundtrack to the cycle of the universe. Her voice ranges from the death-metal growls of her Thorr's Hammer work to unnerving, art-inflected experimental singing.
