In the Woods... are a Norwegian avant-garde/progressive metal band from Kristiansand, formed in 1992 from the early Green Carnation lineup. Their debut 'Heart of the Ages' helped shape pagan black metal before the band evolved toward atmospheric, progressive and doom-leaning territory across 'Omnio' and later records, with clean and female vocals broadening the palette. After disbanding in 2000 they reformed in 2014 and continue releasing through Debemur Morti Productions.

    Dola
    BlackAmbientTechnical

Dola are a Polish avant-garde black metal trio formed in Poznań in 2018 and now based in Toruń. Their sound couples a dissonant, aggressive black-metal backbone with ritual ambient, sludge/post-metal heaviness and pronounced jazz elements, the latter carried by Maras's trumpet. Recent album 'Tabernakulum' (2024, Piranha Music) swings between brutal dissonance and the atmospheric avant-garde passages that define the band.

    Wyrmwoods
    BlackTechnicalAmbient

Wyrmwoods is a one-man experimental/atmospheric black metal project from Oulu, Finland, active since 2014 under the alias Nuurag-Vaarn and signed to Inverse Records. Its four full-lengths (Earth Made Flesh, 2017; Spirit & Teeth, 2019; Gamma, 2020; No Sun Nor Moon, 2022) fold progressive rock, doom, jazz saxophone and ambient texture into a black metal core, with Gamma marking a deliberate turn from a chaotic, lo-fi approach toward more progressive, Opeth-indebted songwriting.

The album mixes Spanish-language black metal with lengthy instrumental passages and a lute-song arrangement of Renaissance composer John Dowland's 'Grief'. The band split up after this release.

    Sólstafir (viking/black era)
    BlackTechnicalAmbient

In their early era Sólstafir, formed in Reykjavík in 1995, played raw, epic Icelandic black/viking metal in the vein of Bathory and Enslaved: cold tremolo riffing, harsh vocals and pagan atmosphere. The debut full-length Í Blóði og Anda ("In Blood and Spirit", 2002) crystallized this sound, and its follow-up Masterpiece of Bitterness (2005, Spinefarm) began folding in the progressive and post-metal textures that would later define the band. This era established Sólstafir as one of Iceland's most distinctive extreme-metal exports before their gradual drift away from black metal orthodoxy.

One-person black/doom project from Seattle helmed by J.B., active since 2020, exploring prehistoric mysticism and psilocybin-tinged, entheogenic themes across the demo MMXX (2020) and a 2023 split with fellow Balor's Eye Productions act Graal. J.B. also drums in Graal, making the split a genuine bandmate connection rather than a mere label pairing.

    TechnicalDoomBlack

Long-running unsigned Chicago 'pan-metal' quartet whose four albums (Vanlandingham and Zone 2006, Tsushima 2012, Emeritus 2016, Azimuth 2023) each pursue long-form, genre-hopping narrative songwriting — magisterial doom/prog riffage alongside jazzy slow-builds, kraut-trance rhythms, shoegaze-tinted codas, Americana melodicism and post-hardcore intensity, often within a single track. Metal Archives lists their genre as 'Various' for good reason.

    BlackTechnicalDoom

Dreadnought is a Denver progressive/avant-garde metal band formed in 2012 that fuses prog, doom, folk, jazz, classical/chamber, post-rock and touches of black metal, distinguished by flute, saxophone, mandolin, keyboards and dual female vocals. Across albums like A Wake in Sacred Waves, Emergence (Profound Lore) and The Endless they build long, dynamic pieces that move between folk delicacy and doom weight. Their genre-defying, chamber-inflected approach makes them a natural fit for the atlas.

    Hail Spirit Noir
    BlackAmbientTechnical

Hail Spirit Noir is a Greek band from Thessaloniki (formed 2010) that welds 1970s psychedelic and progressive rock — vintage organ, synth and mellotron textures — onto a modern second-wave black metal frame. Founded by Haris and Theoharis, both veterans of the prog outfit Rex Mundi and the avant/symphonic project Transcending Bizarre?, the band cultivates an occult, horror-tinged atmosphere across concept albums, drifting further into synth-forward territory on Eden in Reverse. Frequently filed alongside Oranssi Pazuzu and Arcturus as psychedelic/avant-garde black metal.
