Titaan

last active 2020

Titaan is the one-man occult black metal project of Italian musician Lalartu, based in Trieste, built around a conceptual exploration of ancient Mesopotamian mythology across Kadingir (2016) and ITIMA (2020). The project fuses aggressive second-wave black metal with dark ambient textures and ritualistic vocal chanting, aiming for a 'cinematic' rather than song-based listening experience. Releases are issued via the Italian label ATMF.

WHY THOSE SCORES

  • Death 1Occasional death-metal-adjacent riffing surfaces beneath the black metal foundation of Kadingir (2016).
  • Black 7Aggressive second-wave black metal (blast beats, tremolo picking) forms the core of both Kadingir and ITIMA.
  • Technical 3Layered, multi-part compositions build through shifting sections ('layers upon layers of esoteric textures').
  • Theatrical 3Ritualistic chanting voices and ceremonial, 'cinematic' staging built around a Mesopotamian occult concept (Bandcamp, NCS review).
  • Doom 1Slow, weighted passages appear between blast sections.
  • Drone 2Sustained noisy/ambient shadings are used as transitional textures between metal passages.
  • Ambient 4Dark ambient shadings are a defining, explicitly noted feature of the project (NoCleanSinging, Metal Storm, ATMF Bandcamp).

    Schammasch
    BlackAmbientTechnical

Schammasch are a Basel, Switzerland avant-garde black metal band formed in 2009, named for the Mesopotamian sun god Shamash. Beginning in black/death territory, they grew increasingly experimental, peaking with the triple-album Triangle (2016) whose final disc is pure ambient, and Hearts of No Light (2019), which folds clean/post-punk vocals and ritualistic dark-ambient into their black-metal core. Occultism, spirituality and surrealism thread their long-form, atmosphere-first releases on Prosthetic Records.

    Nomicon
    BlackAmbientTechnical

Nomicon was a Helsinki act led by vocalist/bassist Tommi Launonen (Ceasar), moving from an early death/thrash sound into symphonic, atmospheric black metal by the 2001 album Halla, drawing comparisons to The Kovenant's Nexus Polaris but 'enriched with more deeply doomy atmospherics.' The band drew on a deep bench of Finnish extreme-metal talent, including guitarist Roope Latvala (later Children of Bodom), rhythm guitarist Miika Niemela (Shape of Despair), female vocalist Tanya Kemppainen (Lullacry), and drummer Yka 'Agathon' (Barathrum). A Metal Archives review characterizes Halla's keyboard-led sound as a 'misanthropic baroque celebration' anchored by 'apocalyptic witch-esque rasps.'

    Osculum Serpentis
    BlackAmbientTheatrical

Osculum Serpentis ('Kiss of the Serpent') is a French one-man raw/vampiric black metal project from Paris, formed in 2022 by Maxime Taccardi under the alias Vipera, who handles all guitars, bass, synth, drums, and vocals. In roughly two years the project released a striking run of material — Maleficia (2023), The Curse of the Vampyre (2023), Miseria (2024), Satanā (2024, Giin Productions), Vampyre Lord (2024), and The Streams of Sorrow (2025) — steeped in the primitivist Légions Noires lineage but pushed toward theatrical excess: Vipera deploys 'a multitude of demonic voices' compared to Attila Csihar's ceremonial delivery, layered over dark-ambient, cinematic textures amid the raw riffing. Reviewers have called it 'sheer diabolic Black Metal extravaganza,' an 'epic, even flamboyant' take on vampiric/occult raw black metal.

    Omega Centauri
    BlackAmbient

Omega Centauri is a UK-based atmospheric black metal project built around multi-instrumentalist Tom Vallely, blending glacial tremolo-riff black metal with dark ambient textures, doom-paced passages, and cinematic post-rock swells. Recorded piecemeal between 2006 and 2011, debut Universum Infinitum favors slow-burn atmosphere and philosophical/theological themes over aggression. The project sits in the same cold-and-spacious atmospheric black metal lineage as labelmates on Duplicate Records.

Porta Nigra is a German avant-garde black metal band founded in Koblenz in 2010 by Gilles deRais (guitars, bass) and drummer/vocalist O., who recorded the first two albums as a duo before expanding to a full band. Their concept records — Fin de Siècle (2012), Kaiserschnitt (2015), Schöpfungswut (2020) and Weltende (2023), the last inspired by World War I — move between straightforward black metal fury and more psychedelic, spoken-word-laced detours, released through Soulseller Records. Guitarist Gilles deRais has described the project as a way of channeling 'old spirits' through the music.

    BlackAmbientTechnical

Echo Zero is a Kraków project that debuted in 2026 with "E0," a concept album about an antenna recovered from the Arctic Ocean floor — "the first rung of Jacob's Ladder" — released on Pest Productions. No Clean Singing folded the band into Poland's long tradition of weird black metal, praising its mind-warping ambient stretches, groove-heavy riffs, prowling bass, and "constantly-mutating" multi-tongued vocal performance that never lets the strangeness dull the aggression. The project is led by IHS (Patryk Rzeszutek, aka Faustyna IHS Moreau), also the mainman of atlas act Biesy.

De Magia Veterum is the guitar-driven black metal outlet of Dutch multi-instrumentalist Maurice "Mories" de Jong, founded in 2003 as a dedicated counterpart to his more electronic/drone-leaning project Gnaw Their Tongues. Across five studio albums released between 2005 and 2017 (Spikes Through Eyes, Migdal Bavel, The Divine Antithesis, The Deification, Naked Swords into the Wombs of the Enemy) the project pursues dissonant, atonal black metal steeped in esoteric and biblical imagery. De Jong self-releases the project through his own label Transcendental Creations and hosts it on the shared Gnaw Their Tongues Bandcamp alongside his other aliases Aderlating, Cloak of Altering and Seirom.
