Graal were a Ukrainian avant-garde black/death metal band from Sumy, evolving out of the earlier acts Temptation (1992) and Brainstorm (1992-97) before adopting the Graal name. Their sole full-length, Sigullum Naturae (1998), is remembered in cult circles as one of the strangest metal records of the 1990s, splicing black/death riffing and shrieked vocals with flute, bayan, cimbalom, freeform jazz, flamenco-style bass, and circus-music interludes. The band split up not long after, leaving one album and one split release behind.

Montreal avant-garde/progressive metal septet (active 1996-2015) whose 'coreless' music splices black and death metal with tango, jazz, circus music, medieval passages, trip-hop and ambient across four records. The lineup wielded a nine-string bass, violin and keyboards alongside three vocalists ranging from operatic soprano to shrieks and growls. In a Flesh Aquarium (2006, The End Records) is their best-known statement.

Solo avant-garde black metal project of Portuguese multi-instrumentalist Nuno Lourenço, formed 2016 and now based in Pernambuco, Brazil. Fuses raw second-wave black metal with classical guitar duets, folk woodwinds (flute, clarinet, violin), and unexpected full jazz interludes (saxophone, trumpet, bass, tambourine); the 2022 album Pariah is a Greek-mythology concept work centered on the Fates and features bouzouki throughout its 'Greek Suite,' deliberately left unmixed as an aesthetic choice.

Back to R'lyeh is a Madrid progressive/avant-garde metal band formed in 2011, building Lovecraftian Cthulhu Mythos concept albums out of genre-hopping riffs that swing from black and death metal aggression into funk, jazz-tinged chords, and theatrical, multi-voiced vocal performances. Critics have compared their unpredictable, vocally chaotic style to Mr Bungle, Sigh, and System of a Down.

Sceptocrypt is a Maltese extreme metal project founded in 1992 in Tarxien by Malcolm 'Gool' Callus, active until 1999 and revived from 2014 (now based in London). Billing itself 'Extreme Music Research,' the band hybridizes death, doom and black metal with baroque classical structure — the 1997 track 'Oratorio Mortem' merges chordal classical passages and acoustic interludes with violin and soprano vocals before erupting into metal — and its 2023-24 comeback singles lean into neo-folk, flamenco, and theatrical concept work (2024's 'The Wards Outside' is built around Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty).

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter are a long-running Weimar, Germany act (formed 1995) whose sound resists easy categorization, fusing melodic death metal, folk metal, power/symphonic metal and Neue Deutsche Härte with punk energy and, in later albums, jazz and ambient touches. Their 2017 album 'Der Rote Reiter' was recorded and released entirely in German, marking a deliberate turn toward their home-language folk-metal identity. The band has toured internationally for three decades and remains active on Nuclear Blast/The End Records.

This Trifixion (Piacenza/Brembio, Italy, 1988-1995) began as straightforward death metal on its 1991 demo before lurching into genuinely deranged avant-garde territory by 1993's Sindrome of a New Flesh and the posthumously-released Abschurfungepoch (1995, Ematofagia) - goth-industrial death metal punctuated by mandolin, atmospheric keyboard interludes, psych-rock jams, and an electronic-dance-music left turn on one closing track. It is one of the earliest and strangest entries in the avant-garde death metal lineage, its ambition outrunning its cohesion by most reviewers' accounts.

High Castle Teleorkestra is a remote avant-fusion "supergroup" assembled during the pandemic by Estradasphere alumni Tim Smolens and guitarist Chris Bogen, with members scattered across the US, Norway, Australia and France. Their 2022 debut, "The Egg That Never Opened" (released on Art As Catharsis), retells Philip K. Dick's "Radio Free Albemuth" through a cacophonous fusion of Eastern European folk, swing jazz, exotica and technical metal. The lineup draws on Estradasphere, Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Farmers Market and Umlaut.

Azure Emote is an avant-garde death metal project founded in New York in 2003 by illustrator/vocalist Mike Hrubovcak (Monstrosity, Vile) as an outlet 'to express personal negativity without the genre limitations often present within Extreme Metal.' Built around a core band with guitarist Ryan Moll, bassist Kelly Conlon, drummer Mike Heller and violinist Pete Johansen, the project layers in shifting rosters of guest musicians — female vocalists, saxophone, harmonica, keyboards — to give nearly every song its own distinct color. Releases including The Gravity of Impermanence (2013) and The Third Perspective (2020) have come out on Selfmadegod Records.

João Pessoa, Brazil quartet formed in 2012, blending sludge metal, zeuhl and prog rock with the traditional rhythms and folklore of Northeastern Brazil. Their 2021 debut Holoceno, a concept album about ecological apocalypse, drew comparisons to Mastodon jamming with 70s King Crimson and Magma; 2024's Lampião Rei tells a biographical narrative about bandit leader Lampião. Their 2026 album Celestial folds in MPB, black metal, ciranda and forró, tracked entirely to magnetic tape without computers.
