Back to R'lyeh is a Madrid progressive/avant-garde metal band formed in 2011, building Lovecraftian Cthulhu Mythos concept albums out of genre-hopping riffs that swing from black and death metal aggression into funk, jazz-tinged chords, and theatrical, multi-voiced vocal performances. Divina Enema is a Belarusian avant-garde/progressive metal act from Minsk, founded in 1998 with an explicit goal of 'theatrical extravaganza.' Records like 'Under Phoenix Phenomenon' (2003) layer gothic, death and black metal against folk and electronic detours, with guest violin, cello and tenor sax dressing up concept-album narratives about a man haunted by inner voices. It is a lesser-known post-Soviet entry in the theatrical/symphonic-adjacent avant-metal lineage.
- UnaffiliatedEI 12AshenspireTheatricalJazzyTechnical
Ashenspire is a Glasgow avant-garde/progressive black metal act formed in 2015, one of Scotland's most distinctive experimental metal bands. Their acclaimed 2022 album 'Hostile Architecture' (Code666) welds black-metal dissonance to avant-garde jazz, weaving saxophone, violin, Rhodes and prepared piano beneath vocalist Alasdair Dunn's Sprechstimme delivery. Lyrically it is a scathing, class-conscious critique of late capitalism, gentrification and urban design.
- UnaffiliatedEI 17AtrorumTechnicalTheatricalBlack
Atrorum is a two-person avant-garde/progressive black metal project from Munich, Germany, formed in 1998 by vatroS (guitars, bass, clean vocals, programming) and umbrA (vocals, keyboards, programming). Across three albums on Apathia Records — most notably 2015's Structurae — the band folds symphonic black and death metal into gothic organ, choir, cabaret, funeral-doom, jazz, and industrial-electronic passages, alternating harsh and clean vocals delivered in French, German, and English.
- UnaffiliatedEI 9Terra ImpressionumTechnicalJazzyBlack
Terra Impressionum formed in 2005 in the small Crimean seaside town of Novofedorivka, Ukraine, later regrouping in Kyiv, and play avant-garde black/doom metal that folds in art-rock, blues, and jazz. Their two full-lengths, TI:tanium (2008) and Transmitting Device (2010), reach further into opera and Brazilian rhythms, but the project has been on hold since a 2011 lineup collapse left a third album unfinished.
- UnaffiliatedEI 18MaladieTechnicalTheatricalJazzy
Maladie is a German 'plague metal' collective from Ludwigshafen, founded in 2009 by multi-instrumentalist Björn Köppler, whose self-coined genre name plays on the French word for sickness. Signed to Apostasy Records, the band pairs a progressive/melodic black metal core with cinematic orchestration, jazz-inflected saxophone (courtesy of Hauke Peters) and deliberately theatrical, multi-vocalist arrangements across a numbered 'Symptoms' album series. Their sixth full-length, The Dance of Tragedies (2026), was praised for eclectic musicianship even as some reviewers found its genre-toggling and irony overplayed.
- UnaffiliatedEI 19HengetTechnicalTheatricalBlack
Henget is a Finnish avant-garde black metal project founded in late 2021 by guitarist Jesse J. Heikkinen (also of The Abbey and Iterum Nata) and vocalist King Aleijster de Satan (of Saturnian Mist), signing to Season of Mist in September 2022. Their debut album Beyond North Star (May 2023) pursues a violent hallucinatory journey rooted in psychedelia, the occult, and ancient shamanism.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 18Imperial TriumphantTechnicalTheatricalJazzy
Imperial Triumphant is a New York City avant-garde black/death metal band formed in 2005 by vocalist-guitarist Zachary Ezrin, who describes the group as translating the dissonance, grandeur and decadence of Manhattan into sound. Since the mid-2010s the core trio of Ezrin, bassist/keyboardist Steve Blanco and drummer Kenny Grohowski has fused blackened extremity with jazz, brass, chorales and cinematic art-deco menace, performing in gilded golden deity masks. Signed to Century Media in 2019, they built a run of records including Vile Luxury (2018), Alphaville (2020) and Spirit of Ecstasy (2022) with a rotating cast of avant-garde collaborators.

maudlin of the Well (stylized lowercase, often abbreviated motW) was an avant-garde metal band from Boston formed in 1996 around the songwriting core of Toby Driver, guitarist Greg Massi and lyricist Jason Byron. Across the 1999 debut My Fruit PsychoBells... A Seed Combustible and the 2001 companion albums Bath and Leaving Your Body Map, they braided death and doom metal with jazz horns, clean female and male vocals, chamber textures and ambient passages. The group dissolved in 2002 and Driver reconstituted the project as Kayo Dot; motW later reunited to record the fan-funded Part the Second (2009).

Carnival in Coal was a French extreme/avant-garde metal duo formed in Amiens in 1995 by vocalist Arno Strobl and multi-instrumentalist Axel Wursthorn, active until 2007 (briefly revived 2014). The band mixed death and black metal with disco, pop, reggae, and chamber-rock elements under a recurring carnival/circus concept, releasing albums via War On Majors, Season of Mist, and Earache's Elitist imprint. Critics drew comparisons to Faith No More/Mr. Bungle, Frank Zappa, and John Zorn for the band's genre-defying juxtapositions.

The record was mixed and mastered by Angel Marcloid (Fire-Toolz).
