Back to R'lyeh is a Madrid progressive/avant-garde metal band formed in 2011, building Lovecraftian Cthulhu Mythos concept albums out of genre-hopping riffs that swing from black and death metal aggression into funk, jazz-tinged chords, and theatrical, multi-voiced vocal performances. Critics have compared their unpredictable, vocally chaotic style to Mr Bungle, Sigh, and System of a Down.

Carnival in Coal was a French extreme/avant-garde metal duo formed in Amiens in 1995 by vocalist Arno Strobl and multi-instrumentalist Axel Wursthorn, active until 2007 (briefly revived 2014). The band mixed death and black metal with disco, pop, reggae, and chamber-rock elements under a recurring carnival/circus concept, releasing albums via War On Majors, Season of Mist, and Earache's Elitist imprint. Critics drew comparisons to Faith No More/Mr. Bungle, Frank Zappa, and John Zorn for the band's genre-defying juxtapositions.

Sceptocrypt is a Maltese extreme metal project founded in 1992 in Tarxien by Malcolm 'Gool' Callus, active until 1999 and revived from 2014 (now based in London). Billing itself 'Extreme Music Research,' the band hybridizes death, doom and black metal with baroque classical structure — the 1997 track 'Oratorio Mortem' merges chordal classical passages and acoustic interludes with violin and soprano vocals before erupting into metal — and its 2023-24 comeback singles lean into neo-folk, flamenco, and theatrical concept work (2024's 'The Wards Outside' is built around Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty).

Free Salamander Exhibit is an avant-rock band from Oakland, California, formed by former members of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Comprising roughly four-fifths of that group's lineup plus additional players, the band pursues an art-prog / rock-in-opposition sound built around an arsenal of homemade instruments alongside guitars, bass, and drums. Their debut album, Undestroyed, was released December 13, 2016 on the Web of Mimicry label.

Empalot were a French experimental band formed in the Landes in 1998 by Gojira's Joe and Mario Duplantier with friends from Joe's high-school thrash band. Self-described as "terroir metal," they welded alternative metal, jazz fusion, funk rock and avant-garde noise to burlesque, self-deprecating theatre, with members costumed as axes, clouds and flowers on stage. Conceived as the festive antithesis of Gojira, the group toured France between 1999 and 2004 and released a single studio album, Tous aux Cèpes (2002), before going on hiatus. The Duplantier brothers performed under the aliases Vensceslas Podoldo and Daniel Pestous.

Mastodon is an American heavy metal band formed in Atlanta in 2000, fusing sludge and stoner metal with progressive rock, hardcore aggression and jazz-influenced drumming into an ambitious, concept-driven sound. Their breakthrough Leviathan (2004), a song cycle built around Moby-Dick, established them as one of the most original and influential American metal bands of the 21st century, and later records like Crack the Skye (2009) pushed further into psychedelic prog territory. The classic four-piece held together for 25 years until guitarist Brent Hinds split with the band in March 2025 and died in a motorcycle accident that August; three of the four members trade lead vocals, giving the band its distinctive multi-voiced attack.

Flummox is a genre-fluid experimental rock band formed in 2012 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, by Alyson Blake Dellinger and Drew Jones, blending sludge, doom, swing, bluegrass, and hardcore within elaborately theatrical live shows. The band is best known for comedic stage bits, including an audience-favorite sequence where Dellinger transforms into an opossum during the song 'Oh, Possum.' Their sixth album, Southern Progress, was released in April 2025 on Needlejuice Records, with vocals tracked at Judas Priest guitarist Richie Faulkner's Nashville studio.

The Deserts of Traun (stylized TRAUN) is an experimental, multi-genre metal project from Santa Barbara, California, founded and largely composed by drummer Dave Murray, formerly of Estradasphere. Its self-titled 2003 debut features Murray on numerous instruments alongside contributions from Estradasphere guitarist Jason Schimmel and others, blending metal, jazz, progressive rock and soundtrack styles. Murray later carried the project's polyrhythmic-metal sensibility into High Castle Teleorkestra.

Polkadot Cadaver is an American avant-garde/alternative metal band formed in Rockville, Maryland in 2007 by ex-members of Dog Fashion Disco, and stylistically a close continuation of that band. Their 'schizophrenic musical madness' shape-shifts between thrashing metal, folk-pop, experimental rock and darkly comedic theatricality across albums like Purgatory Dance Party, Sex Offender and Echoes Across the Hellscape. Clutch's Neil Fallon guested on their 2013 record.

Stolen Babies are an American experimental/avant-garde rock band formed in California in 2001, built around Dominique Lenore Persi's accordion and theatrical vocals in a 'dark cabaret' meets prog-metal frame. Twin brothers Rani and Gil Sharone anchor the rhythm section; influences include Oingo Boingo, Mr. Bungle and Fishbone. They released There Be Squabbles Ahead (2006) via No Comment/The End Records.
