This Trifixion (Piacenza/Brembio, Italy, 1988-1995) began as straightforward death metal on its 1991 demo before lurching into genuinely deranged avant-garde territory by 1993's Sindrome of a New Flesh and the posthumously-released Abschurfungepoch (1995, Ematofagia) - goth-industrial death metal punctuated by mandolin, atmospheric keyboard interludes, psych-rock jams, and an electronic-dance-music left turn on one closing track. It is one of the earliest and strangest entries in the avant-garde death metal lineage, its ambition outrunning its cohesion by most reviewers' accounts.

Carnival in Coal was a French extreme/avant-garde metal duo formed in Amiens in 1995 by vocalist Arno Strobl and multi-instrumentalist Axel Wursthorn, active until 2007 (briefly revived 2014). The band mixed death and black metal with disco, pop, reggae, and chamber-rock elements under a recurring carnival/circus concept, releasing albums via War On Majors, Season of Mist, and Earache's Elitist imprint. Critics drew comparisons to Faith No More/Mr. Bungle, Frank Zappa, and John Zorn for the band's genre-defying juxtapositions.

Divina Enema is a Belarusian avant-garde/progressive metal act from Minsk, founded in 1998 with an explicit goal of 'theatrical extravaganza.' Records like 'Under Phoenix Phenomenon' (2003) layer gothic, death and black metal against folk and electronic detours, with guest violin, cello and tenor sax dressing up concept-album narratives about a man haunted by inner voices. It is a lesser-known post-Soviet entry in the theatrical/symphonic-adjacent avant-metal lineage.

Ram-Zet is a Norwegian avant-garde metal band formed in Hamar in 1998 as the solo vehicle of vocalist/guitarist Zet (Henning Ramseth), later expanding into a full band. Their self-described 'schizo-metal' welds black/thrash foundations to industrial textures, prominent violin and rare time signatures, framed by concept albums about schizophrenia with dual harsh/clean vocals. Their experimentalism sits largely in the progressive, technical and black-metal dimensions rather than the exotic 'weird' axes.

Oxiplegatz was the solo project of Alf Svensson, founding guitarist and a chief early songwriter of At the Gates, who left the band in 1993 after With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness to pursue tattoo art and this stranger, self-described 'cyber doom' and 'electronic-opera-black metal' outlet. Released on Season of Mist, its two full-lengths (Worlds and Worlds, 1996; A Sidereal Journey, 1998) reject verse-chorus songwriting for continuous, narrative-driven compositions, the latter a concept record about an alien civilization's flight from its dying homeworld.

Dramanduhr is a one-man Sicilian avant-garde/Mediterranean metal project by songwriter-producer Stefano Eliamo, formed in 2020 and built around an invented ritual mythology (the "Rite of the Volcano") and its own glossolalia language, Dahrmonium. Eliamo performs all vocals, guitars, bass, drums, percussion and synths himself, augmented on the debut by guest viola and soprano vocals. The project has released two full albums to date, Tramohr (2022, BloodRock Records/Nero Corvino) and Vertuhn (2025), fusing black-metal-styled blasts and chugs with orchestral, tribal and esoteric-occult atmospheres.

Acrylazea is a Rochester, NY avant-garde/progressive metal act (formed 2016) built around an interstellar-pirate concept, complete with invented stage personas (The Captain, Sirius J. Axion, The Eye, Professor V.V. Olfenstein, Byron Nova). Debut A Cavalcade of Cosmic Calamity (2021) fuses melodic death metal, folk metal, power metal and neoclassical shred, with guest vocals from Judas Priest's Tim "Ripper" Owens. Reviewers place it in the theatrical/conceptual-metal lineage of Unexpect and Vulture Industries rather than any straightforward extreme-metal subgenre.

Korova is an Austrian avant-garde black metal band formed in Innsbruck in 1990 by Christof Niederwieser, Michael Kröll, Moritz Neuner and Georg Razesberger. Their 1995 Napalm Records debut A Kiss in the Charnel Fields fused black and death metal with dual vocals, unusual time signatures, and acoustic color from timpani, mandolin and violin, following it with Dead Like an Angel (1998). Niederwieser and Neuner later split off to form Korovakill, with Niederwieser also releasing solo material as Chryst.

Dethklok is the real-world melodic death metal act behind Brendon Small's animated series Metalocalypse, with Small performing guitars, lead vocals, bass and keyboards and Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad, Death, Dark Angel) on drums since the 2007 debut The Dethalbum. Powered by Hoglan's blast beats and Small's technical shredding, the studio project became the highest-charting death metal act in Billboard 200 history at the time. Its over-the-top satirical concept culminated in the sung-through metal opera The Doomstar Requiem (2013). The touring lineup has drawn on Zappa/Vai-school virtuosos including Bryan Beller, Mike Keneally and Nili Brosh.

Atrox is a long-running Norwegian avant-garde metal band from Trondheim (formed 1988, debut album 1997) that brands its sound 'schizo/psycho metal' — experimental, progressive metal built on sharp contrasts of light and dark, unorthodox structures, and intense, bizarre vocals. Rooted in an atmospheric death/doom origin, later albums on Season of Mist (Contentum, Terrestrials, Binocular, Monocle) push toward melodic yet unpredictable, keyboard-and-sample-textured territory in the vein of Arcturus and Manes. The band's guitar core (viNd and Rune Sørgård) has anchored it since 1997.
