Fleshvessel is a New Orleans-based avant-garde death metal project led by multi-instrumentalist Alexander Torres, active since 2019 and signed to I, Voidhanger Records (with Xenoglossy Productions handling physical releases). Their sound folds death and blackened extremity together with progressive-rock detours, gypsy-folk passages, jazz basslines, and cabaret-styled piano, using an expanded instrumental palette (viola, flute, ocarina, Puerto Rican cuatro/tres, glockenspiel, trumpet). Debut LP Yearning: Promethean Fates Sealed (2023) and follow-up Obstinacy: Sisyphean Dreams Unfolded (2025) cite Phlebotomized, Demilich, Kayo Dot and Maudlin of the Well as influences — though no direct member or label ties to those acts were found, so no edges were added on that basis.

Grey Aura are a Dutch avant-garde/experimental black metal band from Utrecht, active since the mid-2010s, known for sprawling concept albums — one dealing with a doomed 1596 Arctic expedition, another with a fictional early-20th-century Spanish/Dutch painter. Their work folds flamenco guitar, brass, and jazz-fusion textures into a blackened, noise-inflected framework, and they have performed full-album sets at Roadburn Festival.

Graal were a Ukrainian avant-garde black/death metal band from Sumy, evolving out of the earlier acts Temptation (1992) and Brainstorm (1992-97) before adopting the Graal name. Their sole full-length, Sigullum Naturae (1998), is remembered in cult circles as one of the strangest metal records of the 1990s, splicing black/death riffing and shrieked vocals with flute, bayan, cimbalom, freeform jazz, flamenco-style bass, and circus-music interludes. The band split up not long after, leaving one album and one split release behind.

Back to R'lyeh is a Madrid progressive/avant-garde metal band formed in 2011, building Lovecraftian Cthulhu Mythos concept albums out of genre-hopping riffs that swing from black and death metal aggression into funk, jazz-tinged chords, and theatrical, multi-voiced vocal performances. Critics have compared their unpredictable, vocally chaotic style to Mr Bungle, Sigh, and System of a Down.

Henget is a Finnish avant-garde black metal project founded in late 2021 by guitarist Jesse J. Heikkinen (also of The Abbey and Iterum Nata) and vocalist King Aleijster de Satan (of Saturnian Mist), signing to Season of Mist in September 2022. Their debut album Beyond North Star (May 2023) pursues a violent hallucinatory journey rooted in psychedelia, the occult, and ancient shamanism.

Pensées Nocturnes is the avant-garde black metal project of French composer Léon Harcore (formerly Vaerohn), founded as a solo studio endeavor in Paris in 2008 before Harcore assembled a live band in 2016. Fusing black metal fundamentals with musette, cabaret, tango, and neoclassical orchestration, the project's Grand Guignol Orchestra (2019) and Douce Fange (2022) have been called 'the most French a black metal album can possibly be.' The band records for Les Acteurs de l'Ombre Productions and has performed at festivals including Hellfest (2018).

High Castle Teleorkestra is a remote avant-fusion "supergroup" assembled during the pandemic by Estradasphere alumni Tim Smolens and guitarist Chris Bogen, with members scattered across the US, Norway, Australia and France. Their 2022 debut, "The Egg That Never Opened" (released on Art As Catharsis), retells Philip K. Dick's "Radio Free Albemuth" through a cacophonous fusion of Eastern European folk, swing jazz, exotica and technical metal. The lineup draws on Estradasphere, Mr. Bungle, Secret Chiefs 3, Farmers Market and Umlaut.

Imperial Triumphant is a New York City avant-garde black/death metal band formed in 2005 by vocalist-guitarist Zachary Ezrin, who describes the group as translating the dissonance, grandeur and decadence of Manhattan into sound. Since the mid-2010s the core trio of Ezrin, bassist/keyboardist Steve Blanco and drummer Kenny Grohowski has fused blackened extremity with jazz, brass, chorales and cinematic art-deco menace, performing in gilded golden deity masks. Signed to Century Media in 2019, they built a run of records including Vile Luxury (2018), Alphaville (2020) and Spirit of Ecstasy (2022) with a rotating cast of avant-garde collaborators.

Kayo Dot is an American avant-garde/experimental band formed in Boston in 2002 by multi-instrumentalist Toby Driver out of the ashes of his previous group maudlin of the Well. Their 2003 debut Choirs of the Eye was released on John Zorn's Tzadik label and set the template for a restless, genre-dissolving music that has drifted across chamber metal, art rock, post-rock, drone and synth-driven new wave over more than a decade of records. Driver is the band's only constant, steering a rotating cast of string players, horn players and rhythm sections through long-form compositions that refuse to sit still.
