Book of Sand
United States · formed 2009 · last active 2022
Book of Sand is the solo black metal project of Minneapolis musician dcrf, active since 2009 and aligned with the anarchist/antifascist 'red and black metal' (RABM) scene. Each release deliberately shifts genre — a Javanese gamelan/black-metal fusion, an Appalachian-folk-inflected record, an avant-garde jazz excursion, and the surf-rock-tinged 'garage goth' EP 'Postmodern Witchcraft' (2018) — unified by leftist lyrical themes.

- UnaffiliatedEI 17Thy CatafalqueFolkBlackAmbient
Thy Catafalque is a Hungarian avant-garde/experimental metal project formed in Makó in 1998, essentially the solo vehicle of multi-instrumentalist Tamás Kátai. Its music fuses atmospheric instrumental writing, Hungarian folk melodies and electronics with a post-black-metal core, ranging from fragile ambient passages to harsh metal. Signed to Season of Mist since 2011, the project is known for shape-shifting albums that draw on folklore, rock and electronic textures.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 13VainaBlackFolkTechnical
Vaina is an active Finnish avant-garde black metal project (formed by siblings in 2014) whose records braid raw black-metal riffing and shrieked/growled vocals with flute, horns, strings, choral and clean singing, and dense ambient/noise passages — critics have compared the effect to Dead Can Dance colliding with black metal. Sung entirely in Finnish, releases run from the 2017 EP Viisikärki through 2024's Unio Mystica (Aesthetic Death, UK).
- UnaffiliatedEI 16KaátaìraBlackFolkAmbient
Kaátaìra (also rendered Kaatayra) is the one-man project of Caio Lemos from Brasília, Brazil, blending atmospheric black metal with acoustic, regional Brazilian folk music. Across albums such as 'Inpariquipê' (2021) and 'Caminhos de Água' (2026, on Avantgarde sublabel Flowing Downward), rasped black-metal fury is threaded through acoustic guitar, folk instrumentation and drawn-out ambient passages. 'Caminhos de Água' is a river-themed suite that even weaves in spoken word from the artist's grandmother.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 12FuriaBlackFolkTechnical
Furia is a Polish black metal band formed in Katowice in 2003, fronted by Michał "Nihil" Kuźniak, considered one of the most influential and boundary-pushing acts in the Polish scene. The band's self-described "Nekrofolk" style fuses raw black metal with Polish folk, psychedelia and post-punk, drawing on the industrial/forested landscape of Silesia; Nihil and bassist Kamil "Sars" Staszałek also play together in MasseMord. Furia performed at Primavera Sound in 2014 and was nominated for Polityka's Passport award in 2023 for the album Huta Luna.
- UnaffiliatedEI 10FjoergynBlackFolkTechnical
A Thuringian epic/symphonic black metal band that has drifted steadily toward progressive excess: synthesized orchestration, pagan/folk motifs, and, on 2023's Judasmesse, krautrock passages and a saxophone solo folded into second-wave-derived black metal. Bandcamp tags it avant-garde but most of the catalogue still sits inside melodic/symphonic black metal, with the experimentation concentrated on the later records.
- Norwegian avant-blackEI 20SolefaldBlackFolkTechnical
Solefald is a Norwegian avant-garde metal duo formed in 1995 by Cornelius Jakhelln and Lars Are 'Lazare' Nedland. They build on a black-metal foundation while folding in clean vocals, piano, jazz guitar, classical passages, punk, electronic components and folk rhythms, self-described as 'Red Music With Black Edges.'
- UnaffiliatedEI 27RemmirathBlackSurfFolk
Bratislava-based project that started as straightforward black metal on 2008's Polis Rouge before mutating into the genre-scrambling entity heard on 2015's Shambhala Vril Saucers, which folds 60s surf-rock and spaghetti-western twang, krautrock, throat chanting, and musique-concrete noise collage around a core of tremolo-picked black metal. Lyrically the band trades in Eastern mysticism, UFO conspiracy theory, and New Age ephemera, deliberately leaving listeners unsure whether it's serious, half-serious, or a put-on. Members perform under initials/aliases only, and the album was released on Kristallblut Records.
- UnaffiliatedEI 27Dawn of a Dark AgeBlackFolkJazzy
Dawn of a Dark Age is the main vehicle of Italian multi-instrumentalist Vittorio Sabelli (aka Eurynomos), formed in 2014 and joined on vocals/drums by Emanuele Prandoni (also of Progenie Terrestre Pura) from 2020. A trained classical and jazz musician, Sabelli gives the clarinet and acoustic guitar a leading role within an avant-garde black metal framework, layering in saxophone, choral chant, spoken word, and Italian folk melody. The catalogue includes the five-part The Six Elements series (2014-2017) and the Samnite-history-themed La Tavola Osca (2020) and Le Forche Caudine (2021).
- UnaffiliatedEI 14Crestfallen DuskBlackFolkAmbient
Crestfallen Dusk is a mostly one-man Tennessee project led by Ryan Clackner (also of Primeval Well, Vile Haint, and StumpTail) that reimagines black metal through the lens of Mississippi Hill Country blues, citing Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside as touchstones. The 2022 self-titled debut (Moonlight Cypress Archetypes) pairs blast beats and blackened shrieks with twangy, reverb-drenched blues guitar recorded on a vintage 1958 Fender Musicmaster. Sean Meyers (drums) and Zac Ormerod (lyrics/mixing) round out the record's credits.
- UnaffiliatedEI 9SwampbornBlackFolkAmbient
Post-black metal duo from Saint Petersburg, Russia, active as Swampborn since 2011. Guitarist Pathrone and vocalist Sur released their debut full-length Beyond Ratio via Hypnotic Dirge Records in 2022, weaving brass, violin, cello and accordion into a black-metal core across a concept narrative about existential horror and urban decay.
