Furia is a Polish black metal band formed in Katowice in 2003, fronted by Michał "Nihil" Kuźniak, considered one of the most influential and boundary-pushing acts in the Polish scene. The band's self-described "Nekrofolk" style fuses raw black metal with Polish folk, psychedelia and post-punk, drawing on the industrial/forested landscape of Silesia; Nihil and bassist Kamil "Sars" Staszałek also play together in MasseMord. Furia performed at Primavera Sound in 2014 and was nominated for Polityka's Passport award in 2023 for the album Huta Luna.

Nebelkrähe were a black metal band from Munich, active 2007 to their split-up in January 2025. Built on a driving, melodic black-metal core, later records (Ephemer, 2023; a full 2024 re-recording of the 2009 debut Entfremdet) folded in cello, accordion, harmonica and hackbrett (hammered dulcimer) as recurring folk-instrumentation color, with Empyrium's Markus Stock guesting on the Ephemer track 'Kranichträume.' Reviewers describe the late-period sound as 'modern' and varied black metal that stays grounded in the genre while using its acoustic guests sparingly rather than as a wholesale folk-metal turn.

Lengsel are a Norwegian progressive/avant-garde 'unblack' metal band formed in 1995, whose 2000 debut Solace won a following for its atmospheric, experimental take on black metal. The band is tightly bound to Extol: guitarist Tor Magne Glidje joined Extol in 1999 (first on bass, later guitar) and, over time, all three Lengsel members became members of Extol. The overlap left Lengsel a largely studio-bound project.

Dëgénéréscence is a French black metal project, active since 2019, centered on the musician known as Infämie, who handles vocals and all instruments. The project is affiliated with the Cërcle Mortüaire collective (alongside Feuille Morte, Mortuaire, Olatom Amespïrïa and others) and released albums such as Hélas ! Je n'étais pas fait pour cette haine... (2020) and ...Ainsi ! Nous dansâmes aux limbes détestées... (2022) through Drakkar Productions. Its sound is catalogued as depressive/atmospheric black metal shading into blackgaze, pairing raw riffing with piano-led, ambience-forward passages.

Korova is an Austrian avant-garde black metal band formed in Innsbruck in 1990 by Christof Niederwieser, Michael Kröll, Moritz Neuner and Georg Razesberger. Their 1995 Napalm Records debut A Kiss in the Charnel Fields fused black and death metal with dual vocals, unusual time signatures, and acoustic color from timpani, mandolin and violin, following it with Dead Like an Angel (1998). Niederwieser and Neuner later split off to form Korovakill, with Niederwieser also releasing solo material as Chryst.

MRTVI ('dead' in Serbian) is the solo experimental black metal project of UK/Serbia-based musician Damjan Stefanović, active since the mid-2010s. Albums pair dissonant, blast-beat-driven black metal with ambient textures, Eastern-scaled acoustic-guitar interludes and tribal-percussion breaks. Stefanović performs every instrument himself.

Urarv is the avant-black-metal vehicle of Björn 'Aldrahn' Dencker, founding vocalist of Dødheimsgard, conceived in 2003 during a stay in a mental institution and originally aimed at 'true Norwegian folkish black metal' before mutating into something stranger. Across Aurum (2017), Argentum (2018), and Substratum — recorded 2013, finished 2021/22 — it channels Ved Buens Ende-style dissonant terror and folkloric black-metal mutation through Aldrahn's singular howled vocal delivery, positioned by the band itself as parallel to, not part of, the black metal mainstream.

Ulver (Norwegian for "wolves") formed in Oslo in 1993 around vocalist Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg, and their first three albums — Bergtatt (1995), Kveldssanger (1995) and Nattens Madrigal (1997) — form the so-called "Black Metal Trilogie" that defines this era. The sound fused raw, buzzing Norwegian black metal and harsh vocals with quiet acoustic folk passages, classical guitars, cello and choral chamber chants, drawing on Scandinavian folktales and Baroque poetry. Kveldssanger dropped electric instruments entirely for a wholly acoustic record, while Nattens Madrigal swung back to deliberately underproduced, abrasive black metal. Together the trilogy made Ulver one of the most distinctive and literary voices of the 1990s Norwegian black metal scene.

Midoran is the solo dark-fantasy project of French multi-instrumentalist Athal'Zacker, part of the Cercle Mortuaire collective alongside acts like Degenerescence and Mortuaire. Its prolific catalog alternates between raw, melodic black metal and synthesizer-driven dungeon synth passages, built around an ongoing fantasy narrative (Zolaria, Merozia, the Athal'Zackar mythos) in a vein reminiscent of Nuit Noire or Trha. Releases favor world-building atmosphere and lore over technical ambition.

Hail Spirit Noir is a Greek band from Thessaloniki (formed 2010) that welds 1970s psychedelic and progressive rock — vintage organ, synth and mellotron textures — onto a modern second-wave black metal frame. Founded by Haris and Theoharis, both veterans of the prog outfit Rex Mundi and the avant/symphonic project Transcending Bizarre?, the band cultivates an occult, horror-tinged atmosphere across concept albums, drifting further into synth-forward territory on Eden in Reverse. Frequently filed alongside Oranssi Pazuzu and Arcturus as psychedelic/avant-garde black metal.
