Bible Launcher
Bible Launcher was a mid-1990s San Francisco outfit built around guitarist Ron K., saxophonist 99 Hooker, bassist John McCoy, and drummer Dave Mairz, splicing screaming free-jazz sax, spoken-word rants, and pilfered samples from televangelist broadcasts and pornography into a satire of American Christian media. Recorded in 1995–96 for John Zorn's Tzadik label as part of the Lunatic Fringe series, the album was pulled almost immediately over uncleared samples and instead surfaced (with bonus tracks) on San Francisco's Radical House label. AllMusic filed the project under 'metallic avant-rock' — a description that fits its collage-noise, sax-drenched chaos better than any conventional metal tag.
SCORE PROFILE
Accent numbers counted towards the index. Hover an axis — or hold it on a phone — for what it means.
WHY THOSE SCORES
- Jazzy 6 — 99 Hooker's screaming, free-jazz-inflected saxophone is a lead texture throughout, per AllMusic's description of 'screaming saxophones' driving the mix.
- Glitch 5 — The record is built from spliced, manipulated samples of televangelist broadcasts and pornographic film audio cut into the music (AllMusic; Terminal Escape review).
- Theatrical 6 — The whole project is a conceptual satire of televangelism, staged through spoken-word rants and found-sermon samples layered over the band (AllMusic bio).
- Ambient 3 — Terminal Escape's contemporaneous review describes 'manic dirges' and sample-collage atmosphere as 'indescribably 90s' weirdness — an atmospheric noise-scape beneath the songs, though a secondary element.

- UnaffiliatedEI 19Negative ØhioTheatricalJazzyGlitch
Negative Øhio is a noise/experimental duo of Gigakoops (Ohio) and Nightmare Lyre (Norway), begun in 2016. Self-tagged across an eclectic sprawl — jazz fusion, industrial, dark ambient, digital hardcore, queercore, dada, and avant-garde metal — the project favors abrasive, self-consciously limitless production married to absurdist, Dada-inflected humor.
- UnaffiliatedEI 17ArchangelTheatricalJazzyGlitch
Archangel is an avant-garde/electronic metal band from Venice, Italy, formed in 1994, notable for a groove-metal-rooted early sound that evolved into a symphonic, industrial, and electronically-inflected style incorporating elements as varied as saxophone passages within metal arrangements. Their 1996/97 debut 'In Tears the Angel Falls...' is often cited as a landmark avant-garde metal record and the band has been credited by some (including their own promotion) as the first metal act to tune entirely to the Golden Mean-derived 432 Hz standard. They continued releasing conceptually ambitious albums through 2010's 'The Story of My Immor(t)al Life', with core member Vam Kama Ocean Archangel (vocals/keyboards) present since formation.
- UnaffiliatedEI 13Harmony BayTheatricalJazzy
Harmony Bay is a Czech avant-garde extreme metal band from Jihlava, formed in 1998, classified by Metal Archives under absurdist/nonsense/humorous lyrical themes. Their sound is built around live drums, guitar, and vocals from core members Petr "Bob" Pokorný and Petr "Gravyy" Stáva, with a synthesizer filling in the remaining instrumentation, resulting in a described fusion of metal with jazz and other genres. Best known locally for songs like "Žbluňk" and their album Bezcharakterní Šprým Idiomiasmatického Koníka, the project has stayed a deep-underground, self-released concern for over two decades.
- Patton-verseEI 13Peeping TomGlitchTheatrical
Peeping Tom is Mike Patton's self-described 'version of pop music' — chart-radio hooks, trip-hop and hip-hop production run through his warped sensibility, named after Michael Powell's 1960 voyeur thriller. Its sole, self-titled album (Ipecac, May 30, 2006) took roughly six years to assemble, built by swapping song files through the mail with a rotating cast including Dan the Automator, Rahzel, Norah Jones, Massive Attack, Kool Keith, Amon Tobin and Bebel Gilberto. Widely called Patton's most mainstream-accessible work since Faith No More, it reached #103 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Heatseekers chart — the atlas's clearest case of an avant-metal lifer infiltrating pop rather than escaping it.
- Tool-verseEI 22PusciferTheatricalGlitchAmbient
Puscifer is the shape-shifting studio-and-performance-art project of vocalist Maynard James Keenan, formed in Los Angeles around 2003 out of a fictional band gag from HBO's Mr. Show. Where his other bands Tool and A Perfect Circle deal in heavy rock, Puscifer wanders through electronic rock, trip-hop, art rock and post-industrial textures, wrapped in tongue-in-cheek desert-Americana theatrics. The core trio of Keenan, multi-instrumentalist/producer Mat Mitchell and singer Carina Round fuse music, live performance and visual art into a single conceptual whole.
- Igorrr-verseEI 166:33TheatricalJazzyGlitch
Paris's 6:33 build unpredictable, theatrical avant-metal around rotating lead vocalists and songs that swerve from grinning electronic pop hooks ('I'm a Nerd') to widescreen prog-metal bombast. Signed to Kaotoxin Records for 2015's Deadly Scenes, the band draws comparisons to Devin Townsend's maximalism and Diablo Swing Orchestra's genre-hopping theatrics. Multi-vocalist trade-offs and electronic texture keep the material feeling more like a revue than a conventional metal band.
- UnaffiliatedEI 17Dog Fashion DiscoTheatricalJazzy
Dog Fashion Disco is an American avant-garde metal band formed in Rockville, Maryland in 1995, built around vocalist Todd Smith and long-serving drummer John Ensminger. Frequently likened to Mr. Bungle, they splice heavy metal with jazz, circus and film-noir cabaret, 1960s psychedelia, ska and funk into whiplash, concept-driven records. A saxophone/woodwind chair (Matt Rippetoe) anchors the jazz side of the lineup, and their 2001 major-label album Anarchists of Good Taste features a guest turn from System of a Down's Serj Tankian.
- UnaffiliatedEI 14Kokumaromilk (こくまろみるく)TheatricalJazzyGlitch
こくまろみるく (Kokumaromilk) is a Japanese avant-garde outfit that dresses power and symphonic metal foundations in noise interludes, jazz-pop detours, and a vocalist who swings between saccharine-cute and unhinged within the same song. Reviewers place it alongside Sigh and Gonin-Ish in Japan's weird-metal lineage, praising its whiplash genre-shifts. Documentation outside Metal Archives is thin, so several details (full lineup, precise formation year) remain unconfirmed.
- UnaffiliatedEI 15Anthurus d'ArcherTheatricalJazzy
Anthurus d'Archer is a five-piece experimental metal-jazz fusion outfit from Poitiers, France, blending free jazz, industrial textures and avant-garde rock with saxophone, flute, brass, percussion and samples. Their releases lean into absurdist song titles and elaborate visual/theatrical presentation, including a trilogy culminating in the stage-based piece "Le voyage d'André" (2008). The project has self-released steadily since the debut album Plastofilène (2004), often partnering with visual artist Patrice Le Garrec and percussionist Frank Quintard.
- Cavalera / GojiraEI 17MixhellGlitchTheatricalAmbient
Mixhell is the São Paulo-born electronic project founded in 2006 by former Sepultura drummer Iggor Cavalera and his wife Laima Leyton, which grew from a husband-and-wife DJ duo into a live three-piece with bassist Max Blum. Their sound welds techno, acid, disco and industrial to Cavalera's ferocious live drumming, landing somewhere between dance music and rock. The debut album Spaces (2013), mixed by Brazilian techno producer Gui Boratto and released on Boysnoize Records and Last Gang, features a guest vocal from Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan on the single 'Exit Wound'.
