Harmony Bay

Headkase were an Australian avant-garde metal band from Brisbane (2001-2014) built around a genuine circus stage show — masks, face paint and carnival theatrics — layered over a genre-blending sound mixing metal with jazz, techno, salsa and swing. Frequently billed as 'Brisbane's own Mr. Bungle,' their sole full-length was 'The Worm County Circus' (2009); they disbanded in 2014.

Dog Fashion Disco is an American avant-garde metal band formed in Rockville, Maryland in 1995, built around vocalist Todd Smith and long-serving drummer John Ensminger. Frequently likened to Mr. Bungle, they splice heavy metal with jazz, circus and film-noir cabaret, 1960s psychedelia, ska and funk into whiplash, concept-driven records. A saxophone/woodwind chair (Matt Rippetoe) anchors the jazz side of the lineup, and their 2001 major-label album Anarchists of Good Taste features a guest turn from System of a Down's Serj Tankian.

První Hoře ('First Grief,' named after a Franz Kafka short story) is a Czech alternative/experimental rock band formed in 1998 in Jičín, fronted by theatrical stage personas. こくまろみるく (Kokumaromilk) is a Japanese avant-garde outfit that dresses power and symphonic metal foundations in noise interludes, jazz-pop detours, and a vocalist who swings between saccharine-cute and unhinged within the same song. Confusatron is a genre-hopping avant-garde metal band from Portland, Maine, active on and off since 2001 (a decade-plus hiatus ended with a 2019 return). Songs careen between jazz measures, surf-rock, prog-metal complexity, Italian-opera and Gilbert-and-Sullivan pastiche, and cow-punk within single tracks, drawing frequent press comparisons to Mr. Bungle.

Anthurus d'Archer is a five-piece experimental metal-jazz fusion outfit from Poitiers, France, blending free jazz, industrial textures and avant-garde rock with saxophone, flute, brass, percussion and samples. Primus are a San Francisco Bay Area experimental rock trio led by bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, whose virtuosic slap-and-tap bass, absurdist storytelling and cartoonish character sketches define a sound that fuses funk, thrash, prog and Americana. Formed in 1984, they broke through with Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda, later returning with records like The Desaturating Seven (2017).
