The Meads of Asphodel

Korova is an Austrian avant-garde black metal band formed in Innsbruck in 1990 by Christof Niederwieser, Michael Kröll, Moritz Neuner and Georg Razesberger. Their 1995 Napalm Records debut A Kiss in the Charnel Fields fused black and death metal with dual vocals, unusual time signatures, and acoustic color from timpani, mandolin and violin, following it with Dead Like an Angel (1998). Niederwieser and Neuner later split off to form Korovakill, with Niederwieser also releasing solo material as Chryst.

Noble Déchet is a Quebec City black metal project active since 2020, built around Le Mangeur de Feuilles Mortes (vocals, guitar, bass, double bass, organ) and Jean-Guilde (drums, vocals). RateYourMusic tags and user reviews mark them as avant-garde/folk black metal, layering 'weird folk and pagan esoterica' over raw, occult-themed black metal, with the project's own promotional voice leaning hard into absurdist, self-mythologizing humor.

Tormentor is the Hungarian black-metal band (Budapest, 1986) whose vocalist Attila Csihar went on to define Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas; their own catalog runs from the foundational proto-black-metal of Anno Domini to the far stranger Recipe Ferrum (2000, Avantgarde Music), which wraps Hungarian-folklore imagery, orchestral samples, and a theatrical Dracula narrative around the riffing. It sits at the root of second-wave black metal rather than inside any later avant-garde scene, connected to the wider atlas chiefly through Csihar's own subsequent collaborations.

Urarv is the avant-black-metal vehicle of Björn 'Aldrahn' Dencker, founding vocalist of Dødheimsgard, conceived in 2003 during a stay in a mental institution and originally aimed at 'true Norwegian folkish black metal' before mutating into something stranger. Across Aurum (2017), Argentum (2018), and Substratum — recorded 2013, finished 2021/22 — it channels Ved Buens Ende-style dissonant terror and folkloric black-metal mutation through Aldrahn's singular howled vocal delivery, positioned by the band itself as parallel to, not part of, the black metal mainstream.

Ulver (Norwegian for "wolves") formed in Oslo in 1993 around vocalist Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg, and their first three albums — Bergtatt (1995), Kveldssanger (1995) and Nattens Madrigal (1997) — form the so-called "Black Metal Trilogie" that defines this era. The sound fused raw, buzzing Norwegian black metal and harsh vocals with quiet acoustic folk passages, classical guitars, cello and choral chamber chants, drawing on Scandinavian folktales and Baroque poetry. Kveldssanger dropped electric instruments entirely for a wholly acoustic record, while Nattens Madrigal swung back to deliberately underproduced, abrasive black metal. Together the trilogy made Ulver one of the most distinctive and literary voices of the 1990s Norwegian black metal scene.

Zeal & Ardor are a Swiss-American avant-black-metal project founded in 2013 by Manuel Gagneux, fusing tremolo-picked black metal with African-American spirituals, gospel and blues into a distinctive chain-gang-meets-Satanism sound. Expanded from a one-man studio project into a full touring band, they released acclaimed records via MVKA and later Sub Pop and shared a 2019 co-headline tour with Baroness and Deafheaven. Kurt Ballou of Converge mixed their 2019 concert album Live in London.

Furia is a Polish black metal band formed in Katowice in 2003, fronted by Michał "Nihil" Kuźniak, considered one of the most influential and boundary-pushing acts in the Polish scene. The band's self-described "Nekrofolk" style fuses raw black metal with Polish folk, psychedelia and post-punk, drawing on the industrial/forested landscape of Silesia; Nihil and bassist Kamil "Sars" Staszałek also play together in MasseMord. Furia performed at Primavera Sound in 2014 and was nominated for Polityka's Passport award in 2023 for the album Huta Luna.

Dramanduhr is a one-man Sicilian avant-garde/Mediterranean metal project by songwriter-producer Stefano Eliamo, formed in 2020 and built around an invented ritual mythology (the "Rite of the Volcano") and its own glossolalia language, Dahrmonium. Eliamo performs all vocals, guitars, bass, drums, percussion and synths himself, augmented on the debut by guest viola and soprano vocals. The project has released two full albums to date, Tramohr (2022, BloodRock Records/Nero Corvino) and Vertuhn (2025), fusing black-metal-styled blasts and chugs with orchestral, tribal and esoteric-occult atmospheres.

A Thuringian epic/symphonic black metal band that has drifted steadily toward progressive excess: synthesized orchestration, pagan/folk motifs, and, on 2023's Judasmesse, krautrock passages and a saxophone solo folded into second-wave-derived black metal. Bandcamp tags it avant-garde but most of the catalogue still sits inside melodic/symphonic black metal, with the experimentation concentrated on the later records.

그슨대 (Gsndae) is a South Korean avant-garde depressive black metal project from Pocheon-si, active since 2018, released via the black metal circle 'Black Poets.' Its sole full-length, 傳說 (Korean Tales) (2018), fuses DSBM/atmospheric black metal with Korean traditional instrumentation and pansori narrative-singing technique, framed as a journey through Korean dark folklore. The project is written, produced and mostly performed by a single artist under the alias 아체 (Arche), with session musicians on guitar and bass.
