Kakofonium
Poland
Kakofonium is a Poznań, Poland black metal project wrapped in an elaborate original mythology about 'Cybertemplars' who chose black metal as their weapon in a cosmic 'Final Crusade.' Musically it fuses raw/experimental black metal with cybergrind, synth-punk and dungeon-synth textures, self-described as 'cyber-blackened-death-metal.' It's DIY tape/bandcamp culture at its most conceptually unhinged.
SCORE PROFILE
Accent numbers counted towards the index. Hover an axis — or hold it on a phone — for what it means.
WHY THOSE SCORES
- Glitch 6 — Kakofonium's own genre tagging spans cybergrind and synth-punk alongside black metal, reflecting a 'cyber black metal' sound built on electronic manipulation.
- Theatrical 4 — Their releases are framed by an elaborate original mythology about 'Cybertemplars' — pre-temporal beings serving 'the Holy Noise' who choose black metal as their weapon in a 'Final Crusade' — laid out in the band's own liner notes.

- UnaffiliatedEI 10SconsacrataBlackGlitchHardcore
Solo industrial black/death metal project of Charlie Davis (also vocalist/bassist of sludge band Beggar and of the punk project Wasted Death), based in London, England. Debut album Paroxysms (2022) fuses grinding, blast-beat black metal with mechanized industrial-dub textures, deliberate 'inhuman' digital glitches, and ritualistic chant-like vocal passages, drawing conceptually on Philip K. Dick's VALIS and Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 20The KovenantBlackGlitchTheatrical
The Kovenant are a Norwegian band formed in 1992 (as Covenant) in Hamar that began in symphonic black metal and reinvented itself as industrial/cyber 'space metal' after its 1999 rename. The pivotal 1998 album Nexus Polaris, released on Nuclear Blast, drew in Mayhem drummer Jan Axel 'Hellhammer' Blomberg, who has remained the band's drummer. Fronted by Lex Icon (ex-Dimmu Borgir) and Psy Coma, their programming-drenched sound sits at the electronic edge of the Norwegian avant-black scene.
- UnaffiliatedEI 24ChoronzonBlackGlitchTheatrical
Choronzon is a merger of two unrelated American projects — Florida black-metaller P. Emerson Williams and San Francisco industrial artist Demitria Monde Thraam — who discovered each other online in 2002 and combined forces. What resulted, starting with 1998's Samoth-signed Magog Agog, is ritualistic, electronics-soaked black-industrial metal conceived explicitly as ceremonial music for occult initiates. Williams' background in London's FoolishPeople theatre troupe, where he literally played the demon Choronzon on stage, leaks into everything the band does.
- UnaffiliatedEI 11Occulted Death StanceBlackGlitchHardcore
Occulted Death Stance is the central sonic-ritual vehicle of English outsider collective Anti-Social Kultur England (A.S.K.E.), fusing raw black metal with power-noise electronics, industrial abrasion, and oi-punk snarl across a steady stream of cassette and vinyl releases (Feathered Serpent, Crush Your Enemies, Wake & Hate). The music favors confrontational noise-collage and ritualistic atmosphere over conventional song structure. It reads less like death metal and more like black metal's junk-electronics/noise fringe.
- UnaffiliatedEI 20Vessel of IniquityBlackGlitchDeath
The solo vehicle of British multi-instrumentalist A. White, Vessel of Iniquity builds an oppressive catalogue of black/death metal fused with industrial noise, drum machines, and power-electronics-style sound design, citing Coil and Godflesh alongside Mayhem and Napalm Death as touchstones. Signed to Sentient Ruin Laboratories (with European releases via Xenoglossy Productions), the project favors a druggy, atmosphere-first sound closer to Gnaw Their Tongues than to melodic black metal. 2022's The Path Unseen introduced eight-string guitars, pushing the sound lower and more oppressive still.
- UnaffiliatedEI 8SADWRISTGlitchBlack
SADWRIST is a French solo artist and self-described pioneer of the 'trashwave' aesthetic, fusing harsh noise, witch-house, djent, black metal, and trap into dense, glitch-riddled tracks. Song and album titles are rendered almost entirely in stylized Unicode symbols, extending the project's noisy, deliberately unstable identity into its visual presentation as much as its sound.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 20Crystalline Thunderbolts Pierce the Sacred MountainBlackGlitchTheatrical
Crystalline Thunderbolts Pierce the Sacred Mountain is a synth-driven raw black metal / dark ambient project of prolific Dutch multi-instrumentalist Maurice 'Mories' de Jong (Gnaw Their Tongues, Cloak of Altering, De Magia Veterum, Obscuring Veil, Aderlating, Seirom). Releases like Blessed Hands Touch the Ophanim Under the Golden Rainbows (2023) and Shine Like the Suicidal Madness of the Sacred Amethyst (2024) are built from 'wild keyboard music exclusively' — chaotic, saturated electronic textures layered with black-metal atmosphere and grandiose, scripture-tinged song titles about celestial beings. It's tagged avant-garde/symphonic/black metal on metal.academy and functions as one more mutation in de Jong's sprawling, genre-blurring catalog.
- Blackgaze / avant-blackEI 25Cloak of AlteringBlackGlitchTheatrical
Cloak of Altering is the avant-garde black metal solo alias of Dutch multi-instrumentalist Maurice "Mories" de Jong, begun in 2011 as a continuation of his earlier black metal band Ophiuchus and run alongside his other projects Gnaw Their Tongues, De Magia Veterum, Aderlating and Seirom. Where De Magia Veterum is his straight black-metal outlet, Cloak of Altering fuses 'mutated symphonic black metal' with breakcore-derived electronics and industrial noise, inviting comparisons to Blut Aus Nord and An Axis of Perdition. Albums such as Plague Beasts (2014) and Manifestation (2015), released via Crucial Blast, circle cosmic and occult themes across sprawling, drone-heavy tracks.
- UnaffiliatedEI 19XpelleirGlitchBlackTheatrical
Xpelleir is a long-running, deliberately absurdist Birmingham (UK) cybergrind project fusing raw/industrial black metal with vaporwave and Y2K internet-culture aesthetics — programmed blasts, sampled telephone tones, and mock-corporate conceptual staging (its 2022 album Blackmetal.com imagines black metal fandom as a virtual marketplace). Active on and off since 2009 under mainstay Lazer Rot, with a rotating cast of guitarists and vocalists.
- UnaffiliatedEI 15DadabotsGlitchBlackDeath
Dadabots is the Boston-based duo of CJ Carr and Zack Zukowski, who began building neural-network music generators at MIT's Music Hack Day in 2012, training models directly on extreme-metal source albums to generate derivative works and a long-running 24/7 livestream. An unconventional candidate — a generative-AI project rather than a conventional band — but its documented use of specific atlas bands' music as direct training material creates real, citable relationships.
