2 Foot Yard was a San Francisco/Oakland-based chamber-rock trio led by violinist-vocalist Carla Kihlstedt, alongside cellist-vocalist Marika Hughes and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily (drums, guitar). Functioning as a songwriting collective, the group blended chamber-music intimacy with rock and avant-pop, occupying "the fertile cracks between art song and pop song." It grew out of a solo album Kihlstedt released on Tzadik and released two records: the self-titled "2 Foot Yard" (Tzadik, 2003) and "Borrowed Arms" (self-released, 2008).

A San Diego collective mixing free-jazz horns (sax, tuba, French horn) and folk instrumentation (banjo, accordion) with noise-rock abrasion and beatnik-poetry vocals, resisting the 'metal band' label despite billing themselves as extreme. Press describes them as an unpredictable blend of free improvisation, algorithmic composition, and 'ancient campfire songs' colliding with shattered noise.

SNAILFORCE! is the genre-hopping instrumental project of Greg Eldridge and Adam Stacey, based in Portland, Oregon, blending metal, Balkan, prog and other styles into what the band calls a "musical slime project." Adam Stacey is also known for recording with Estradasphere, Atomic Ape, Secret Chiefs 3, High Castle Teleorkestra and Igorrr. The band's debut, the two-track EP "Greg and Adam's Wilderness Adventure," was released on May 24, 2024, mixed and mastered by Justin Phelps at The Hallowed Halls, with a rotating cast of guest players on strings, horns, shamisen and more.

Tin Hat Trio (later just Tin Hat) is an acoustic chamber ensemble formed in San Francisco in 1997 by violinist Carla Kihlstedt, accordionist/pianist Rob Burger, and guitarist Mark Orton, weaving jazz, Eastern European folk, bluegrass, and neoclassical music into what they call freewheeling chamber music. It earns a place in this atlas as the antipode of Kihlstedt's heavier work: it is where she goes when she leaves metal entirely, trading Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's avant-doom for delicate, composed acoustic filigree. Guests across their albums include Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, and Mike Patton.

The Mars Volta is an American progressive rock band formed in 2001 in El Paso, Texas by guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala after the breakup of At the Drive-In. Their maximalist, Spanish-tinged sound fuses prog, psychedelia, Latin rhythms, jazz fusion and post-hardcore into sprawling suites, heard across landmark records De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003) and Frances the Mute (2005). Fronted by Bixler-Zavala's high, theatrical vocals and driven by Rodríguez-López's restless studio direction, the band won a Grammy for 'Wax Simulacra' before disbanding in 2013 and reuniting in 2022.

Sebkha-Chott are a shape-shifting French avant-garde/experimental-rock ensemble from Le Mans, active since 1999, centered on bassist Wladimir Ohrelianov II, drummer Yüla Slipobitch, and (since 2009) saxophonist/vocalist Souv Ponky Ponk. They coin their own genre tag release to release — 'Mekanik Metal Disco,' later 'Bizarre AvantPorn Mekanik TheaterCore' — blending metal, jazz, zeuhl, gypsy/Egyptian melodicism, and African percussion, staged live as absurdist burlesque theater. Critics and the band themselves invoke Frank Zappa, Magma, Mr. Bungle, and Fantômas as touchstones, though no documented member or label overlap with either metal act was found.

CKRAFT is a Paris-based jazz-metal quintet -- Charles Kieny (augmented accordion), Theo Nguyen Duc Long (tenor saxophone), Antoine Morisot (guitar), Marc Karapetian (bass), and William Bur (drums) -- whose members met studying at conservatories including Berklee and the Paris Conservatoire. Their albums Epic Discordant Vision (2022) and Uncommon Grounds (2025), the latter winner of the Audience Prize at the Triomphes du Metal Francais, fuse djent-adjacent metal heaviness with free-jazz improvisation and Gregorian-chant-derived medieval melody.

Mondo Cane is Mike Patton's orchestral love letter to 1950s–60s Italian pop, assembled after his years living in Bologna: a 40-piece orchestra, 15-piece band, and choir behind Patton crooning Neapolitan standards and Ennio Morricone's 'Deep Down', released on his own Ipecac label in 2010. Co-produced and arranged with conductor Daniele Luppi, the recordings were stitched together from live European performances in 2007. It earns its place in an experimental metal atlas as the purest example of where the genre's members go when they leave metal entirely — the Faith No More and Mr. Bungle frontman trading screams for Morricone-era orchestration, and critics compared it favorably to Mr. Bungle's California.

Andy Winter is a Norwegian keyboardist, founding member of both Winds and Age of Silence, whose solo work (the 2005 EP Shades of Light Through Black and White and 2013's Incomprehensible on The End Records) channels his bands' neoclassical, atmospheric progressive-metal language into guest-vocalist-driven concept albums. Incomprehensible features a different lead singer on nearly every track, including a standout turn from Dan Swanö.

Tantric Bile is the solo avant-death/free-jazz project of North American multi-instrumentalist Matt Stephens, who also leads Effluence and Neural Indent; the name is a nod to a Painkiller track. Since 2021 it has released a steady stream of albums on Stephens' own Putrefactive Recordings, blending guttural goregrind vocals with squealing saxophone-adjacent woodwinds, film samples and John Zorn/Naked City-style jump-cut composition, often joined by regular Effluence collaborators Paul Acuña and Ollie Burgess.
