Tomahawk is the Nashville-formed supergroup that pairs Mike Patton's shape-shifting vocals with Duane Denison's razor-wire guitar, born in 1999 when the two started swapping tapes after a Mr. Bungle tour stop. With John Stanier's piston-precise drumming and bass from Kevin Rutmanis (later Trevor Dunn), the band deals in taut, noirish alternative/avant-garde metal that splits the difference between The Jesus Lizard's angular menace and Patton's cinematic weirdness. Five albums on Patton's Ipecac Recordings — from the 2001 debut through 2021's Tonic Immobility — make it one of the label's flagship acts.

Tool is an American progressive metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1990, meshing dark underground metal with the ambition of art rock into multi-sectioned, layered songs built on odd time signatures and lengthy instrumental passages. The classic lineup pairs vocalist Maynard James Keenan and guitarist Adam Jones with drummer Danny Carey and, since 1995, bassist Justin Chancellor, who replaced founding bassist Paul D'Amour. Empalot were a French experimental band formed in the Landes in 1998 by Gojira's Joe and Mario Duplantier with friends from Joe's high-school thrash band. Self-described as "terroir metal," they welded alternative metal, jazz fusion, funk rock and avant-garde noise to burlesque, self-deprecating theatre, with members costumed as axes, clouds and flowers on stage. Conceived as the festive antithesis of Gojira, the group toured France between 1999 and 2004 and released a single studio album, Tous aux Cèpes (2002), before going on hiatus. The Duplantier brothers performed under the aliases Vensceslas Podoldo and Daniel Pestous.

Helium Horse Fly are a Liège, Belgium avant-garde/experimental-rock act formed in 2009, fronted by vocalist/keyboardist Marie Billy alongside guitarist Stéphane Dupont, bassist Dimitri Iannello and drummer Gil Chevigné (who replaced founding drummer Bastien Dupont in 2014). Critics have described their sound as 'progressive baroque hardcore' and compared its dark, brooding intensity to Kayo Dot, spanning EPs A Dispute to Redefine Clearly Frontiers Between Devils and Angels (2010) and Fishing for Ghosts (2011) through the albums Helium Horse Fly (2013) and Hollowed (2019). Reviewers place them across post-metal, art rock and experimental-rock tags.

Circle is a Finnish experimental rock institution formed in Pori in 1991, built around bassist/vocalist Jussi Lehtisalo, the band's only constant presence and de facto leader. Their restless, ever-mutating music fuses motorik krautrock repetition with heavy metal riffing, ambient, prog and psychedelia, a sound they half-jokingly branded the New Wave of Finnish Heavy Metal. Absurdly prolific across dozens of albums, they release most of their work through Lehtisalo's own Ektro Records, and their 2017 album Terminal appeared internationally on Southern Lord.

The Ocean (also known as The Ocean Collective) is a German post-metal band formed in 2000 in Berlin by guitarist and principal composer Robin Staps, built around a fluid, revolving cast of musicians. Their sound blends post-metal, progressive metal, sludge and avant-garde elements across ambitious concept albums exploring geology, evolution and oceanic depths, including Precambrian (2007), the paired Heliocentric and Anthropocentric (2010), Pelagial (2013), and the Phanerozoic double-album series (2018-2020). The band released early records via Make My Day Records before signing to Metal Blade Records, and Staps also runs the post-metal imprint Pelagic Records.

Keiji Haino is a Japanese guitarist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist active since the 1970s across rock, free improvisation and noise, best known for his long-running band Fushitsusha, formed in 1978. His intensely cathartic sound blends noise, psychedelia and Japanese traditional inflection into massively amplified guitar exploration. Within this atlas he intersects the drone axis directly: Black: Implication Flooding (1998) is a live collaboration album with Boris, and a 2006 meeting with Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley (via Oren Ambarchi) grew into the trio Nazoranai.

maudlin of the Well (stylized lowercase, often abbreviated motW) was an avant-garde metal band from Boston formed in 1996 around the songwriting core of Toby Driver, guitarist Greg Massi and lyricist Jason Byron. Across the 1999 debut My Fruit PsychoBells... A Seed Combustible and the 2001 companion albums Bath and Leaving Your Body Map, they braided death and doom metal with jazz horns, clean female and male vocals, chamber textures and ambient passages. The group dissolved in 2002 and Driver reconstituted the project as Kayo Dot; motW later reunited to record the fan-funded Part the Second (2009).

Waltari is a Finnish experimental/crossover metal band formed in Helsinki in 1986 and led by principal songwriter Kärtsy Hatakka, notorious for splicing progressive, alternative and extreme metal with hip-hop, techno, industrial, pop and punk. Their conceptual ambition peaks in staged productions like the orchestra-backed Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die! Death Metal Symphony in Deep C (1996) and Evangelicum (1999), the latter incorporating ballet, light shows and a guest turn from Nightwish's Tarja Turunen. Alumni include Sami Yli-Sirniö (Kreator), Roope Latvala (Children of Bodom) and Janne Parviainen (Ensiferum).

Dumb Waiter is a Richmond, VA quartet formed in 2012 that fuses noise rock, free/fusion jazz saxophone, mathy post-punk structure, and metallic heaviness into a genre-resistant, frequently absurdist package. Fifth album Gauche Gists (2022, Ossein Records) drew comparisons to Pharoah Sanders and This Heat, with klezmer-tinged sax lines colliding against distorted bass and drums. They sit at the noise-rock/jazz-metal fringe rather than squarely inside metal, but their heaviness and structural weirdness keep them on the avant-garde-metal chart's radar.
