Cosa Brava is an experimental rock and free improvisation group formed in March 2008 in Oakland, California, by guitarist and composer Fred Frith (Henry Cow, Skeleton Crew, Naked City). All About Jazz described their sound as existing somewhere between folk, Celtic, modern chamber, Latin, funk, Eastern, and prog-rock. The quintet released Ragged Atlas (2010) and The Letter (2012) on Switzerland's Intakt Records, followed by Z Sides (2024). Its lineup draws together members of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum with longtime Frith collaborator Zeena Parkins.

2 Foot Yard was a San Francisco/Oakland-based chamber-rock trio led by violinist-vocalist Carla Kihlstedt, alongside cellist-vocalist Marika Hughes and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily (drums, guitar). Functioning as a songwriting collective, the group blended chamber-music intimacy with rock and avant-pop, occupying "the fertile cracks between art song and pop song." It grew out of a solo album Kihlstedt released on Tzadik and released two records: the self-titled "2 Foot Yard" (Tzadik, 2003) and "Borrowed Arms" (self-released, 2008).

Akphaezya are a self-described 'eklektik metal' band from Orléans, France, active since 2002 and built around guitarist/concept-writer Stephan H. Zag-Zero's multi-album story arcs. Reviewers (French-Metal.com, Metal Archives) describe them freely mixing death metal, jazz, gothic, stoner, and cabaret/bal-musette elements, with critics drawing style comparisons to Unexpect, Diablo Swing Orchestra, and Pin-Up Went Down (no documented member/label overlap with those acts was found). Vocal duties have passed from the operatic, ethnically-inflected Nehl Aëlin to current singer Hakata Ooh.

Tantric Bile is the solo avant-death/free-jazz project of North American multi-instrumentalist Matt Stephens, who also leads Effluence and Neural Indent; the name is a nod to a Painkiller track. Since 2021 it has released a steady stream of albums on Stephens' own Putrefactive Recordings, blending guttural goregrind vocals with squealing saxophone-adjacent woodwinds, film samples and John Zorn/Naked City-style jump-cut composition, often joined by regular Effluence collaborators Paul Acuña and Ollie Burgess.

Coinmonster is a Pennsylvania/Ohio-border progressive-metal outfit (New Castle, PA, formed 1990) built around guitarist-vocalist Jon Reider's fusion chops — self-described 'avant-garde jazzcore' that threads Holdsworth/Herring-style jazz-rock guitar through off-kilter time signatures, with detours into banjo-and-brushes Americana on tracks like 'Wake Up Tilton.' Largely a private-press/regional act (The Schematic, 2000; Tilton Johnson, 2002) rather than a scene band, it's an outlier RYM-tagged avant-garde-metal entry with no documented ties to the wider atlas.

CKRAFT is a Paris-based jazz-metal quintet -- Charles Kieny (augmented accordion), Theo Nguyen Duc Long (tenor saxophone), Antoine Morisot (guitar), Marc Karapetian (bass), and William Bur (drums) -- whose members met studying at conservatories including Berklee and the Paris Conservatoire. Their albums Epic Discordant Vision (2022) and Uncommon Grounds (2025), the latter winner of the Audience Prize at the Triomphes du Metal Francais, fuse djent-adjacent metal heaviness with free-jazz improvisation and Gregorian-chant-derived medieval melody.

SNAILFORCE! is the genre-hopping instrumental project of Greg Eldridge and Adam Stacey, based in Portland, Oregon, blending metal, Balkan, prog and other styles into what the band calls a "musical slime project." Adam Stacey is also known for recording with Estradasphere, Atomic Ape, Secret Chiefs 3, High Castle Teleorkestra and Igorrr. The band's debut, the two-track EP "Greg and Adam's Wilderness Adventure," was released on May 24, 2024, mixed and mastered by Justin Phelps at The Hallowed Halls, with a rotating cast of guest players on strings, horns, shamisen and more.

Anthurus d'Archer is a five-piece experimental metal-jazz fusion outfit from Poitiers, France, blending free jazz, industrial textures and avant-garde rock with saxophone, flute, brass, percussion and samples. Their releases lean into absurdist song titles and elaborate visual/theatrical presentation, including a trilogy culminating in the stage-based piece "Le voyage d'André" (2008). The project has self-released steadily since the debut album Plastofilène (2004), often partnering with visual artist Patrice Le Garrec and percussionist Frank Quintard.

Tin Hat Trio (later just Tin Hat) is an acoustic chamber ensemble formed in San Francisco in 1997 by violinist Carla Kihlstedt, accordionist/pianist Rob Burger, and guitarist Mark Orton, weaving jazz, Eastern European folk, bluegrass, and neoclassical music into what they call freewheeling chamber music. It earns a place in this atlas as the antipode of Kihlstedt's heavier work: it is where she goes when she leaves metal entirely, trading Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's avant-doom for delicate, composed acoustic filigree. Guests across their albums include Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, and Mike Patton.

Volto! is an American jazz-fusion jam band based in Los Angeles, best known as the side project of Tool drummer Danny Carey. Formed in the early 2000s from improvised sessions with guitarist John Ziegler and bassist Lance Morrison at a San Fernando Valley jazz club, the group spent nearly a decade as a live-only act before releasing its debut album Incitare (2013) on Fantasy Records. Their heady, genre-spinning instrumental sound bridges King Crimson, Liquid Tension Experiment, and 1970s fusion, foregrounding the improvisation that Carey has cited as his main motivation for the project.
