Charming Timur

Caspian are an instrumental band from Beverly, Massachusetts, formed in 2003, and they use post-rock's crescendo shape as a container for far more than post-rock. Three guitars, pedal steel, synthesizers and tape loops build the quiet halves; the loud halves reach genuine post-metal weight, PopMatters calling Dust and Disquiet (2015) a 'prog-metal melee, equal parts resplendent and eviscerating' full of 'distorted clangor, rife with feedback and guitar squeals'. Around the edges sit things the genre usually leaves out — programmed voices, beats and loops, a crooning trumpet, piano and glockenspiel, and on later records obscured vocal melody and outright screams cutting through the shimmer. Where their peers treat atmosphere as the destination, Caspian treat it as one instrument among several, which is why the records keep changing texture from track to track instead of repeating the same slow build.

All Are to Return is a mostly-anonymous two-person industrial doom/noise project (credited only as 'F' and 'N') based in the Netherlands, releasing since 2020 via Tartarus Records. Their records (II, 2021; III, 2024; Limen, 2025) build colossal, FX-drenched noise-scapes from pulsing synths, doom-paced percussion, and screamed vocals, with lyrical/conceptual focus on ecological collapse and climate catastrophe. No gamelan or other Indonesian/Balinese percussion instrumentation was found in any source consulted, despite that being the scouting lead's premise — the confirmed sound is industrial/doom/noise, not gamelan-folk fusion.

Timeless Necrotears is a Barcelona, Spain solo/duo project built around Christian L. Becker (guitars, synths, vocal effects), joined on some releases by Pablo Bermejo (additional vocals). The project's Bandcamp tags itself as experimental dungeon synth, doom metal, dark ambient and 'dystopia,' and it is extraordinarily prolific, releasing dozens of thematically-linked concept albums (the recurring 'Jurzikum,' 'She-Droid' and 'Planet' cycles) since the mid-2010s alongside a couple of 1990s-era demo reissues. The sound leans on long-form synth atmospheres punctuated by slow, doom-adjacent riffing rather than conventional song structure.

Jodis is a minimal drone/doom trio featuring Aaron Turner (vocals), James Plotkin (guitar) and Tim Wyskida (drums). The band is a modern exploration of restrained sonic minimalism and tonal/textural density, coupling Plotkin and Wyskida's sparse, mercurial rhythmic interplay with Turner's monolithic ambience and distressed vocals. They released two albums on Hydra Head Records: Secret House (2009) and Black Curtain (2012).

Rosetta is a post-metal band formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2003, blending sludge metal, post-rock, drone, ambient, and space rock into a sound the band self-describes as "metal for astronauts." Their key releases include the two-disc The Galilean Satellites (2006), Wake/Lift (2007), and A Determinism of Morality (2010), issued on Translation Loss Records before the group became fully independent. They are known for lengthy, atmospheric compositions and an eclectic hybrid drawing on post-hardcore, shoegaze, and progressive elements.

Isis were an American post-metal band formed in Boston in 1997 and later based in Los Angeles, active until their breakup in 2010. Building on roots in hardcore punk and doom metal, they helped pioneer and evolve the post-metal sound established by Neurosis and Godflesh, favoring lengthy compositions built on repetition and gradual structural evolution. Led by Aaron Turner, founder of Hydra Head Records, the band's core lineup remained consistent across five studio albums including the acclaimed Oceanic (2002) and Panopticon (2004). They disbanded in June 2010, just before a split EP with the Melvins, and reunited once in 2018 as Celestial for a tribute show.

Wear Your Wounds is the atmospheric solo-turned-band project of Converge founder and vocalist Jacob Bannon, grown out of years of lo-fi bedroom recordings. Far from Converge's hardcore violence, its 2017 debut WYW (Deathwish Inc., Bannon's own label) is measured and ethereal, evoking Swans, early Pink Floyd, Sparklehorse and Songs: Ohia. Bannon fronts an expanded lineup with guests including Converge's Kurt Ballou, Mike McKenzie, Chris Maggio and Sean Martin.

Mamiffer is an American experimental band based in Seattle, Washington, founded in 2007 by Faith Coloccia out of ideas from her former group Everlovely Lightningheart. It began as her solo project and grew into a duo with Aaron Turner (of Isis and Sumac), who became her creative partner and later husband; the two also co-founded SIGE Records. The music intertwines ambient, drone, and post-rock composition with piano and ethereal vocals, and the band is known for collaborative albums and rotating guest musicians.

Black Mayonnaise is the long-running one-man bedroom project of Mike Duncan from Akron, Ohio, active since August 1991. It blends heavily detuned, distorted doom/sludge guitar with drum-machine programming, tape loops and cut-up sonic manipulation into a lo-fi, ambient/psych-drone-inflected sound. Cited influences include old Godflesh, old Carcass, Butthole Surfers and Big Black; notable releases include TTSSATTSR (2004) and the retrospective compilation When You Get Caught Between the Moon and Boston Harbor (2011). (Verified spelling: the RYM scout note had a typo, 'Black Mayonaise' — the real band spells it 'Black Mayonnaise'.)

Beneath the Sod is the solo funeral/industrial doom project of Irish musician Ray Keenaghan (Wreck of the Hesperus), formed 2017. Releases include Circling the Drain (2017, Fort Evil Fruit), the split cassette Transmorphic Eye (2018, with Crypticum), and a self-titled 2021 EP on Cursed Monk Records described as harsh, synth-laced industrial doom metal with guest vocals from Richard Carson.
