Peeping Tom is Mike Patton's self-described 'version of pop music' — chart-radio hooks, trip-hop and hip-hop production run through his warped sensibility, named after Michael Powell's 1960 voyeur thriller. Its sole, self-titled album (Ipecac, May 30, 2006) took roughly six years to assemble, built by swapping song files through the mail with a rotating cast including Dan the Automator, Rahzel, Norah Jones, Massive Attack, Kool Keith, Amon Tobin and Bebel Gilberto. Widely called Patton's most mainstream-accessible work since Faith No More, it reached #103 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on the Heatseekers chart — the atlas's clearest case of an avant-metal lifer infiltrating pop rather than escaping it.

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra is an American rock/alternative-metal supergroup founded in 2012 by guitarist Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, melding hard rock and progressive metal. Its lineup drew members from various established acts: Brent Hinds of Mastodon (guitar), William DuVall of Alice in Chains (vocals), Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta (drums), and bassist Pete Griffin (Dethklok, Zappa Plays Zappa). The band released its debut LP, Broken Lines, on September 23, 2016 via Party Smasher Records, reaching #85 on the Billboard 200.

Winds are a Norwegian neoclassical progressive-metal band formed in 1998, trading black-metal ferocity for classically-informed composition, clean vocals and duelling piano and guitar. Drummer Jan Axel 'Hellhammer' Blomberg — best known from Mayhem — anchors the group alongside guitarist Carl August Tidemann and pianist Andy Winter across Of Entity and Mind (2001) and Reflections of the I (2002). The result is one of the scene's most overtly 'classical' side-projects, far from its members' extreme-metal roots.

Archangel is an avant-garde/electronic metal band from Venice, Italy, formed in 1994, notable for a groove-metal-rooted early sound that evolved into a symphonic, industrial, and electronically-inflected style incorporating elements as varied as saxophone passages within metal arrangements. Their 1996/97 debut 'In Tears the Angel Falls...' is often cited as a landmark avant-garde metal record and the band has been credited by some (including their own promotion) as the first metal act to tune entirely to the Golden Mean-derived 432 Hz standard. They continued releasing conceptually ambitious albums through 2010's 'The Story of My Immor(t)al Life', with core member Vam Kama Ocean Archangel (vocals/keyboards) present since formation.

Nine Inch Nails is Trent Reznor's industrial rock project, running from Pretty Hate Machine (1989) through The Downward Spiral, The Fragile, With Teeth, Hesitation Marks and Bad Witch. Atticus Ross joined as an official co-member in 2016 after years as Reznor's key collaborator and co-composer on their film scores. The catalog is built on layered, distorted programming and guitar — "industrial-strength noise over a pop framework" — distinct from the ambient instrumental Ghosts series the band also releases under its own name.

Age of Silence is a Norwegian avant-garde progressive metal 'supergroup' formed in Oslo in 2004 by keyboardist Andy Winter of Winds, drawing members from Mayhem, Arcturus, The Kovenant, and Solefald. Their sole album, Acceleration (2004, The End Records), pairs 'aggressive guitar grind' with Winter's gothic, classically-tinged piano and synths, occasionally veering into pure electronic beats, per a Sputnikmusic review. A follow-up EP, Complications – Trilogy of Intricacy (2005), preceded a long hiatus for the project.

One-man Vienna-based experimental progressive metal project helmed by David Angerer, whose 2026 album Palingenaeon plays like 'a film score at a party' -- neoclassical/symphonic prog metal stitched together with circus music, absurdist black comedy, and a loose concept about botched reincarnation. Extremely new and thinly documented outside a handful of prog/metal press write-ups.

Deli Creeps is guitarist Buckethead's formative avant-garde/funk-metal band, formed in Claremont/San Francisco in the early 1990s and built around Maximum Bob's manic vocals and Buckethead's already-virtuosic, genre-hopping lead guitar. Their sole album, Dawn of the Deli Creeps (2005), compiles re-recorded demo-era material and functions as an origin document for Buckethead's later solo vocabulary — several of its riffs and songs were repurposed on his solo records. Mike Patton has praised the band, and it sits at the root of the Bay Area Buckethead/Praxis/Primus-adjacent avant-metal cluster.

Bay Area funk-metal vehicle formed in 1993 by Primus drummer Tim 'Herb' Alexander during a break from that band, pairing his drums (and eventually lead vocals) with Tom Butler's guitar and Ian Varriale's Chapman Stick/Warr guitar. Two albums, Blacktongue (1994) and Motivator (1999, Rinse-N-Repent Records), trade on the same proggy, slap-and-stick alt-metal chops Alexander brought to Primus. A minor node whose interest for the atlas is almost entirely its direct Primus lineage rather than any genre-scrambling ambition of its own.

The Ocean (also known as The Ocean Collective) is a German post-metal band formed in 2000 in Berlin by guitarist and principal composer Robin Staps, built around a fluid, revolving cast of musicians. Their sound blends post-metal, progressive metal, sludge and avant-garde elements across ambitious concept albums exploring geology, evolution and oceanic depths, including Precambrian (2007), the paired Heliocentric and Anthropocentric (2010), Pelagial (2013), and the Phanerozoic double-album series (2018-2020). The band released early records via Make My Day Records before signing to Metal Blade Records, and Staps also runs the post-metal imprint Pelagic Records.
