Towards Rusted Soil

Ragnarökkur is an atmospheric black metal project whose Bandcamp lists Iceland as its home (Metal Archives instead tags it Finland/Iceland, suggesting a split/international lineup), built around the core pairing of Matron Thorn (strings and synthetics) and Nefarious (drums and percussion), with Palmi and Stefan on voice and guest female vocals from Kabukimono. Its sole release to date, the 2021 demo Fjöldagröf Goðanna, sets furious, technically dense atmospheric black metal against Icelandic-language song titles drawn from Norse mythology (the name itself is an Icelandic form of Ragnarök), with orchestral synth layering thickening the atmosphere. Beyond that one five-track demo there is no further discography or biographical material available.

Alfa Obscura is a one-man Norwegian black metal/avant-garde project based in Oslo, run since around 2010 by Bjeima (Bjørge Eide Martinsen), who writes, performs, and produces all instruments and vocals. Musically it is rooted in cold, dissonant '90s Norwegian black metal tradition pushed into more avant-garde territory across the albums 'Plutonian Shores' (2011) and 'Sisyfos Speil' (2023), the latter drawing critical comparisons to Ved Buens Ende, Virus, and Manes. Bjeima is also a session/touring bassist for the Norwegian avant-garde black metal band Virus, appearing on their album 'The Agent That Shapes The Desert' (2011) and 'Oblivion Clock' EP (2012).

Omega Centauri is a UK-based atmospheric black metal project built around multi-instrumentalist Tom Vallely, blending glacial tremolo-riff black metal with dark ambient textures, doom-paced passages, and cinematic post-rock swells. Recorded piecemeal between 2006 and 2011, debut Universum Infinitum favors slow-burn atmosphere and philosophical/theological themes over aggression. The project sits in the same cold-and-spacious atmospheric black metal lineage as labelmates on Duplicate Records.

Nebelkrähe were a black metal band from Munich, active 2007 to their split-up in January 2025. Built on a driving, melodic black-metal core, later records (Ephemer, 2023; a full 2024 re-recording of the 2009 debut Entfremdet) folded in cello, accordion, harmonica and hackbrett (hammered dulcimer) as recurring folk-instrumentation color, with Empyrium's Markus Stock guesting on the Ephemer track 'Kranichträume.' Reviewers describe the late-period sound as 'modern' and varied black metal that stays grounded in the genre while using its acoustic guests sparingly rather than as a wholesale folk-metal turn.

Præternatura is the solo project of Matron Thorn (also known for his work in Ævangelist), originally based in Portland, Oregon and later Tampere, Finland. Active since 2016, it plays dense, atmospheric black/death metal with doom elements, with Thorn handling all instruments and vocals across a series of Bandcamp-released albums.

Umbral Presence is a Russian black metal side-project founded in 1998 by Noctulius (Rustam), the keyboardist/vocalist of avant-garde metal band Rakoth, conceived as a more brutal, occult-oriented outlet. Its sole full-length, Caelethi I, was recorded in 2000, re-recorded in 2005, and released in 2006 through Sound Age Productions (Moscow), pairing keyboard-driven black/death metal with industrial and ambient textures. Session guitarist Lidagon (Alex Plotnikoff, also of Glazemaker) contributed to the album.

Nomicon was a Helsinki act led by vocalist/bassist Tommi Launonen (Ceasar), moving from an early death/thrash sound into symphonic, atmospheric black metal by the 2001 album Halla, drawing comparisons to The Kovenant's Nexus Polaris but 'enriched with more deeply doomy atmospherics.' The band drew on a deep bench of Finnish extreme-metal talent, including guitarist Roope Latvala (later Children of Bodom), rhythm guitarist Miika Niemela (Shape of Despair), female vocalist Tanya Kemppainen (Lullacry), and drummer Yka 'Agathon' (Barathrum). A Metal Archives review characterizes Halla's keyboard-led sound as a 'misanthropic baroque celebration' anchored by 'apocalyptic witch-esque rasps.'

Ebonillumini is a female-fronted avant-garde/gothic black metal project from London, founded in 2008 by Meads of Asphodel guitarist James Tait ('The Monk Marshall') alongside vocalist Christina Poupoutsi ('The Maiden'). Across The Ebon Channel (2008), Pacificum (2013) and Arktos (2015) the band frames each record as a concept-driven geographic voyage, pairing Poupoutsi's operatic, 'musky' clean vocals against Tait's harsh growls, with reviewers noting jazz-inflected song structures, neo-classical/symphonic orchestration and black-metal-rooted riffing shading into psychedelia and Viking-metal tropes. Production has drawn criticism for burying the heavier material under brickwalled mastering and overlong running times.

De Magia Veterum is the guitar-driven black metal outlet of Dutch multi-instrumentalist Maurice "Mories" de Jong, founded in 2003 as a dedicated counterpart to his more electronic/drone-leaning project Gnaw Their Tongues. Across five studio albums released between 2005 and 2017 (Spikes Through Eyes, Migdal Bavel, The Divine Antithesis, The Deification, Naked Swords into the Wombs of the Enemy) the project pursues dissonant, atonal black metal steeped in esoteric and biblical imagery. De Jong self-releases the project through his own label Transcendental Creations and hosts it on the shared Gnaw Their Tongues Bandcamp alongside his other aliases Aderlating, Cloak of Altering and Seirom.

Wyrmwoods is a one-man experimental/atmospheric black metal project from Oulu, Finland, active since 2014 under the alias Nuurag-Vaarn and signed to Inverse Records. Its four full-lengths (Earth Made Flesh, 2017; Spirit & Teeth, 2019; Gamma, 2020; No Sun Nor Moon, 2022) fold progressive rock, doom, jazz saxophone and ambient texture into a black metal core, with Gamma marking a deliberate turn from a chaotic, lo-fi approach toward more progressive, Opeth-indebted songwriting.
