Khlyst

Khanate was an American drone/extreme doom supergroup formed in New York in 2000 by guitarist Stephen O'Malley and bassist James Plotkin, with vocalist Alan Dubin and drummer Tim Wyskida. Their glacial music paired extremely slow tempos and harsh layers of feedback with Dubin's torturous shrieking, debuting with a self-titled album on Southern Lord Records in 2001. The band split in 2006 before a surprise return with the album To Be Cruel, released via Sacred Bones Records in 2023.

Seattle avant-garde doom/post-black metal band formed in 2012 around vocalist Joy Von Spain, melding melodic black metal, glacial doom, and psychedelic sludge into operatic, ghost-story atmospherics. Signed to Prophecy Productions, their catalog (Moros, Black Somnia, Ligeia) has been called too glacial for sludge, too disjointed for black metal, and too melodic for noise — a genuinely hard-to-pin-down hybrid.

Bethlehem are a German black/doom band formed in Grevenbroich in 1991 by Jürgen Bartsch and Klaus Matton. Their 1994 debut Dark Metal gave an entire subgenre its name, welding black metal's tremolo and shriek to doom's crawl plus violin, piano and keyboard for a uniquely desolate, avant-garde atmosphere. Later records pushed further into Suicidal/Depressive Black Metal territory and, briefly, electronic Neue Deutsche Härte.

Gnaw Their Tongues is the solo project of Dutch composer Maurice de Jong (a.k.a. Mories), established in 2004 and originally conceived under the name Dimlit Hate Cellar. The music fuses noise, dark ambient, black metal, drone, and industrial into oppressive, orchestral-sounding walls of dread, with the project name drawn from the Book of Revelation 16:10-11. De Jong is prolific to the point of running several parallel aliases (De Magia Veterum, Aderlating, Cloak of Altering, Seirom), and Gnaw Their Tongues alone accounts for over seventy releases across labels including Crucial Blast, Consouling Sounds, and Candlelight.

Overmars was a French post-metal band active from 2001 to 2011, formed in Lyon around vocalist Xavier Théret, guitarists Antoine Simon and Pierrick Marin, bassist Marion Leclerc, drummer Benjamin Pic, and keyboardist Tiphaine Coudert. Their 2005 debut Affliction, Endocrine... Vertigo (Candlelight Records) fused doom, industrial, gothic rock, death and black metal into an oppressive, droning, oftentimes sludgy whole, while 2007's Born Again stretched that approach into a single 40-minute piece that NME later named among its 'Twenty Heaviest (Metal) Records of All Time.'

Burning Witch was an American doom/sludge metal band formed on Capitol Hill in Seattle in early 1995 from the ashes of the doom/death band Thorr's Hammer, active until 1998. Known for extremely slow tempos, dense feedback and Edgy 59's alternately mournful and tortured vocals, the group is best remembered as a formative pre-Sunn O))) project for guitarist Stephen O'Malley. Their EP recordings were gathered on the compilation Crippled Lucifer, released in 1998 on Southern Lord Records, the label O'Malley co-founded with fellow Seattle musician Greg Anderson.

Boris's early drone/doom era built monolithic, amplifier-worshipping slabs of sludge, doom and drone metal, frequently structured as single extended long-form pieces rather than conventional songs. The 1996 debut Absolutego is a 65-minute track of oozing, slow-motion, Melvins-inspired drone rock/metal, while Flood (2000) unfolds as one roughly 70-minute title track broken into four movements. Across Amplifier Worship (1998) and Boris at Last -Feedbacker- (2003) the trio pushed feedback, distortion and glacial tempos to the foreground, a sound whose kinship with Sunn O))) later yielded their joint album Altar.

Terra Tenebrosa were a masked, pseudonymous Swedish avant-garde/industrial black metal project from Stockholm (2009-2021), fronted by 'The Cuckoo' (Tomas Hallbom) alongside 'Hisperdal' and 'Hibernal.' Rising out of the ashes of cult post-hardcore band Breach, their three albums - The Tunnels (2011), The Purging (2013), and The Reverses (2016) on Debemur Morti Productions - combine black metal shrieks with industrial noise, sludge-doom heaviness, and dark-ambient drone. The Cuckoo's own history gives the band a direct, sourced tie to the atlas: he was a member of The Ocean (as 'The Ocean Collective,' 2004-2007) and appeared as one of the credited guest vocalists on The Ocean's 2006 album Aeolian.

Thaw are a blackened sludge/doom/noise band from Sosnowiec, Poland, whose discography — from the 2010 demo Decay through 2024's Fading Backwards on Agonia Records — has drifted from straightforward black metal toward increasingly drone- and dark-ambient-soaked territory, with 2017's Grains singled out by listeners as their 'least metal' record. Guitarist Artur 'A' Rumiński doubles as guitarist in fellow Polish black metal act Furia, and Thaw's records layer industrial electronics and modulated drone guitar under blast beats and a funereal doom stomp.

Caged Bastard is the solo project of Tunisian multi-instrumentalist Muhammad Oun (Bizerte, Tunisia), formed in 2018 as a blackened hardcore/grindcore act before evolving since 2019 into a broader fusion of black metal, sludge, drone, noise and ambient textures. Oun writes, performs, records, mixes and masters all material himself. Releases include "Inhumane Intentions" (2024), "Solace in Virtue's Absence" and "Mantra of Psychological Violence."
