Aryos is a long-running French avant-garde black metal act from Ussac/Brive-la-Gaillarde (Corrèze), formed in 1994 (originally as Forlorn, renamed 1997). Built around an occult/esoteric concept by members using the stage names Napharion, Pétal and Alilteas Gornnec, their sound layers jazz-tinged synths, classical piano and prog-rock textures over a black metal core. Later releases like Les Stigmates d'Hécate (2015) lean into atmospheric, folk-tagged textures.

Henget is a Finnish avant-garde black metal project founded in late 2021 by guitarist Jesse J. Heikkinen (also of The Abbey and Iterum Nata) and vocalist King Aleijster de Satan (of Saturnian Mist), signing to Season of Mist in September 2022. Their debut album Beyond North Star (May 2023) pursues a violent hallucinatory journey rooted in psychedelia, the occult, and ancient shamanism.

Hanormale is an Italian 'unconventional black metal' collective from Milan, born in 2009 as a psycho-project of Arcanus Incubus (Carlo Meroni), who handles vocals and most instruments and has since expanded into a rotating cast including violin and saxophone players. Their discography (Oni Monogatari 2010, 天照大御神 2015, Reborn in Butterfly 2019, The Cathartic Anointing of Heterodoxy in Resilience 2022) draws on Japanese-folklore themes and contaminates black metal with jazz, dark ambient doom, and progressive improvisation. The band frames itself as a musicians' collective rather than a fixed lineup, embracing irrational, free-will structures over conventional songwriting.

Epectase is a Paris duo that folds frantic tremolo-picked black metal into long-form suites of 70s prog, jazz-tinged interludes, and hazy krautrock electronics, sliding between shrieks, operatic cleans, and meditative ambient passages within a single track. Since forming in 2018, multi-instrumentalist Vague and vocalist Avitus have released a steady run of albums and EPs on I, Voidhanger Records and Frozen Records, sitting among the more overtly progressive-rock-indebted corners of the French avant-black underground.

Shining is a Swedish depressive/suicidal black metal band formed by Niklas Kvarforth in 1996 — a genuinely distinct entity from the atlas's Norwegian blackjazz Shining (shining-norway). Musically it is rooted in DSBM with early doom influences, gradually adopting clean guitars, solos and odd meters as it drifted toward progressive extreme metal, its avant-garde credentials thinner than most atlas nodes. Its most 'experimental' dimension is arguably Kvarforth's notorious confrontational stagecraft (self-mutilation, razor-blade distribution). Personnel overlap with Mayhem and Arcturus is significant.

Lychgate is a London-based avant-garde black/doom metal band formed around 2011-2012, built on a foundation of pipe/church organ used as the compositional backbone of every track. Their influences span late-19th/early-20th-century art music, Rock in Opposition and musique concrete. They record for Debemur Morti Productions, with a discography running from the 2013 self-titled debut through 2025's 'Precipice.'

Belgian duo pairing vocalist Stephane Van Tricht with multi-instrumentalist Guillaume CZLT (also of Ôros Kaù and a founding member of Neptunian Maximalism), Sol Kia's debut Zos Ethos fuses raw black-metal violence with cosmic psych-doom, drone, and Middle-Eastern melodic color. The record unfolds as a single hallucinatory ritual rather than a set of discrete songs, favoring slow-building drone architecture and occult atmosphere over blast-beat velocity. It leans toward the ritualistic/psychedelic wing of avant-garde metal rather than technical or jazz-fusion experimentalism.

Thorne was a short-lived experimental/atmospheric black metal band from Río Gallegos, Argentina, that recorded one demo (Until Their Ruins Be Our Trench, 2013) and one full-length, Ekpyrosis & Restitutio in Pristinum Status, released as a limited cassette in 2017 by Brotherhood of Light Recordings. The album mixes Spanish-language black metal with lengthy instrumental passages and a lute-song arrangement of Renaissance composer John Dowland's 'Grief'. The band split up after this release.

Vegard Sverre Tveitan, known as Ihsahn, is the Norwegian guitarist/vocalist of the seminal black metal band Emperor (not currently an E.M.M.A. node) who since 2006 has built an acclaimed solo catalogue blending black metal with progressive rock, industrial and free-jazz textures - most notably via saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby of Shining (Norway). He co-founded the avant-garde project Peccatum with his wife Heidi 'Ihriel' Solberg Tveitan, guested on Arcturus's 'The Sham Mirrors,' and hosted Ulver/Arcturus/Borknagar vocalist Kristoffer Rygg on his own debut. His Hardingrock side project fuses traditional Norwegian Hardanger-fiddle folk music with metal.

Terra Impressionum formed in 2005 in the small Crimean seaside town of Novofedorivka, Ukraine, later regrouping in Kyiv, and play avant-garde black/doom metal that folds in art-rock, blues, and jazz. Their two full-lengths, TI:tanium (2008) and Transmitting Device (2010), reach further into opera and Brazilian rhythms, but the project has been on hold since a 2011 lineup collapse left a third album unfinished.
