Reviewers (French-Metal.com, Metal Archives) describe them freely mixing death metal, jazz, gothic, stoner, and cabaret/bal-musette elements, with critics drawing style comparisons to Unexpect, Diablo Swing Orchestra, and Pin-Up Went Down (no documented member/label overlap with those acts was found). Vocal duties have passed from the operatic, ethnically-inflected Nehl Aëlin to current singer Hakata Ooh.

Sanguine Glacialis is a Montreal melodic death metal band, active since 2010, that layers jazz, classical, latin and folkloric elements atop a symphonic/melodic-black-tinged death metal base. Their third album, 2023's Maladaptive Daydreaming, brought in saxophone, clarinet and cello guests over the core lineup fronted by Maude Théberge's vocals, keys and violin. Sanity Theorist is a DIY solo avant-garde/progressive death metal project based in Clermont, Florida, releasing free (donation-based) albums via Bandcamp since at least 2016, including Time Erosion, Escher Architecture, Ferrofluid Quicksand, and Existent Suffering. The composer's own bio describes progressive/death/funk metal roots layered with tribal Taiko drums, '70s prog rock, eastern folk, psychedelia, lead bass, jazz fusion, and neoclassical influences over extreme-metal rhythms. The same artist is also credited as a member of the multi-instrumentalist duo Refusal Knot.

Azure Emote is an avant-garde death metal project founded in New York in 2003 by illustrator/vocalist Mike Hrubovcak (Monstrosity, Vile) as an outlet 'to express personal negativity without the genre limitations often present within Extreme Metal.' Built around a core band with guitarist Ryan Moll, bassist Kelly Conlon, drummer Mike Heller and violinist Pete Johansen, the project layers in shifting rosters of guest musicians — female vocalists, saxophone, harmonica, keyboards — to give nearly every song its own distinct color. Releases including The Gravity of Impermanence (2013) and The Third Perspective (2020) have come out on Selfmadegod Records.

Tantric Bile is the solo avant-death/free-jazz project of North American multi-instrumentalist Matt Stephens, who also leads Effluence and Neural Indent; the name is a nod to a Painkiller track. Since 2021 it has released a steady stream of albums on Stephens' own Putrefactive Recordings, blending guttural goregrind vocals with squealing saxophone-adjacent woodwinds, film samples and John Zorn/Naked City-style jump-cut composition, often joined by regular Effluence collaborators Paul Acuña and Ollie Burgess.

LA duo of guitarist Lee Wanner and vocalist Paula Stefanini, active since 2012, fusing djent, jazz-fusion, blues and country into a genre-scrambling avant-garde metal project. Their two albums, Butterfly (2012) and Exocoetidae: Flying Fish (2013), pair death-metal vocal bursts with virtuosic, humor-laced composition. Guest musicians on Exocoetidae include prog drummers Morgan Ågren and Marco Minnemann.

Polkadot Cadaver is an American avant-garde/alternative metal band formed in Rockville, Maryland in 2007 by ex-members of Dog Fashion Disco, and stylistically a close continuation of that band. Their 'schizophrenic musical madness' shape-shifts between thrashing metal, folk-pop, experimental rock and darkly comedic theatricality across albums like Purgatory Dance Party, Sex Offender and Echoes Across the Hellscape. Clutch's Neil Fallon guested on their 2013 record.

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter are a long-running Weimar, Germany act (formed 1995) whose sound resists easy categorization, fusing melodic death metal, folk metal, power/symphonic metal and Neue Deutsche Härte with punk energy and, in later albums, jazz and ambient touches. Their 2017 album 'Der Rote Reiter' was recorded and released entirely in German, marking a deliberate turn toward their home-language folk-metal identity. The band has toured internationally for three decades and remains active on Nuclear Blast/The End Records.

Forgotten Silence is a long-running Czech experimental/progressive metal band from Rosice, near Brno, founded in 1993 and still active. Fronted by Krusty (bass, vocals) alongside guitarists Medvěd and Hyenik, keyboardist Marty, drummer Čepa, and vocalist Petr Ševčík, the band moved from a death-metal-with-art-rock foundation on early albums toward the fully genre-dissolving 2006 LP "Kro Ni Ka," a mostly-instrumental, spoken-word record blending prog, jazz, ambient and Eastern folk textures that won a Razor Award for album of the year. Seven studio albums deep (through 2023's "Vemork Konstrukt"), the band is consistently described by critics as defying genre classification.
