Worn Mantle

0N0 is a Bratislava, Slovakia doom/death trio built around Twisted (aka Saboska, guitars/vocals/programming, the project's founder since 2005), Acidmilk (guitars, vocals) and Sarkast (vocals), who joined in 2013 to turn Twisted's solo vision into a full band. Their sound welds drop-tuned doom-death riffing to industrial discord, blast-beat intensity and field-recording textures, drawing comparisons to Gorguts, Meshuggah, Godflesh and Blut aus Nord. Still unsigned, they've built a cult reputation through releases like 'Reconstruction and Synthesis' (2016) and 'Unwavering Resonance' (2022) and a 2019 split with fellow atmospheric-doom act Owl.

Owl is the Bonn, Germany atmospheric death-doom project of Christian Kolf (also of Valborg) and drummer Patrick Schroeder, running since 2010 as an outlet for the death-doom and funeral-doom territory Kolf's main band doesn't cover. Records like the self-titled 'Owl' (2011) and 'Nights in Distortion' (2018) split roughly evenly between churning, Immolation/Deathspell-Omega-tinged death metal and long ambient passages of shifting keyboards and reverbed guitar drone. Their most recent compilation, 'Grid Shimmer' (2022), was released jointly through Zeitgeister and Total Dissonance Worship, and they shared a 2019 split with Slovak act 0N0.

Thorr's Hammer was a short-lived doom/death metal band formed in Ballard, Seattle during the winter of 1994-1995 by guitarists Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley, fronted by Runhild Gammelsæter, a then-17-year-old Norwegian exchange student who sang and wrote lyrics. Active for roughly six weeks, the band played two shows and recorded the EP Dommedagsnatt before disbanding when Gammelsæter returned to Oslo. Dommedagsnatt was first issued on cassette in 1996 and reissued on CD in 1998 as the very first release on Southern Lord Records. O'Malley, Anderson and drummer Jamie Sykes went on to form Burning Witch, while Anderson and O'Malley later founded Sunn O))).

Chiva was a Swiss atmospheric doom/black metal and darkwave project from Sion, Valais, formed in 1996 as a parallel/solo outlet for the person behind the band Sadness, described in its own liner notes as 'a desire to realise my personal work through a different and majestic music.' The sole release, the CD 'Oracle morte' (1996, Witchhunt Records/SPV), features four tracks exploring sadness, loneliness, winter and majesty, with additional vocals from Robert Frost on 'Fire And Ice.'

Præternatura is the solo project of Matron Thorn (also known for his work in Ævangelist), originally based in Portland, Oregon and later Tampere, Finland. Active since 2016, it plays dense, atmospheric black/death metal with doom elements, with Thorn handling all instruments and vocals across a series of Bandcamp-released albums.

Thecodontion is a Rome-based black/death metal band formed in 2016 around the unusual choice to abandon guitars entirely, building their sound from two finger-picked distorted basses (plus a third for solos), drums, and vocals. Their releases, including the 2020 full-length Supercontinent on I, Voidhanger Records, follow a 'prehistoric metal of death' concept tracing Earth's continental drift and ancient lifeforms. Reviewers note the band moved from a rawer black/death attack toward a more atmospheric, minimalist, and surprisingly melodic sound, punctuated by bass-driven ambient instrumental passages.

The dark-ambient/doom project of Matron Thorn (also of Ævangelist and Præternatura), based in Tampere, Finland, with six full-lengths 2021-2024. Bandcamp self-tags consistently describe it as experimental dark-ambient doom metal with post-rock and soundtrack qualities and occult lyrical themes — a slower, more spatial sibling to Thorn's more extreme-metal-facing projects.

Overmars was a French post-metal band active from 2001 to 2011, formed in Lyon around vocalist Xavier Théret, guitarists Antoine Simon and Pierrick Marin, bassist Marion Leclerc, drummer Benjamin Pic, and keyboardist Tiphaine Coudert. Their 2005 debut Affliction, Endocrine... Vertigo (Candlelight Records) fused doom, industrial, gothic rock, death and black metal into an oppressive, droning, oftentimes sludgy whole, while 2007's Born Again stretched that approach into a single 40-minute piece that NME later named among its 'Twenty Heaviest (Metal) Records of All Time.'

One-man US avant-garde black/death metal project by the artist known only as R.P., combining heavily syncopated death-metal riffing with nightmarish soundscapes, industrial rhythms and film-score-like atmospheric passages. No Clean Singing (2017) singled out its 'distinctly smooth' unfurling and sparing-but-grand blast-beat eruptions against a mostly slower, tech-doom-leaning foundation. One-person black/doom project from Seattle helmed by J.B., active since 2020, exploring prehistoric mysticism and psilocybin-tinged, entheogenic themes across the demo MMXX (2020) and a 2023 split with fellow Balor's Eye Productions act Graal. J.B. also drums in Graal, making the split a genuine bandmate connection rather than a mere label pairing.
