The Malpractice

Chat Pile are an American noise-rock/sludge-metal band from Oklahoma City, formed in 2019, whose members perform under pseudonyms Raygun Busch, Luther Manhole, Stin and Cap'n Ron. Their self-produced 2022 debut God's Country, released on The Flenser, became a surprise breakout, pairing bleak, regionally specific lyrics with abrasive riffing indebted to Big Black. The band followed it with Cool World in 2024.

Killing Joke are an English post-punk band formed in Notting Hill, London in 1979, whose 'tension music' fused aggressive rhythms with gothic, industrial and metallic weight across landmark records like Night Time (1985) and Pandemonium (1994). Frontman Jaz Coleman's apocalyptic delivery and the band's dense, dubwise heaviness made them a widely cited influence on industrial and alternative acts including Metallica, Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails. Longtime bassist Paul Raven, who joined in 1982, was later briefly recruited for a planned Godflesh US tour that collapsed before it began.

Beta Satan is a Copenhagen band that grew out of the remnants of Tiger Tunes, pairing 'festive hard rock' and post-punk with danceable electro and high-pitched, new-rave synth tones. Their 2008 debut Girls (Crunchy Frog) was a fast, arrogant, complex record whose lineup overlaps heavily with The Malpractice. The five-piece unites drummer Klaus Q. Hedegaard Nielsen and singer Kåre Rolf Hansen from Tiger Tunes with guitarist/I Am Bones frontman Johannes Gammelby, baritone guitarist Kenneth Nørby Andersen and keyboardist Morten Riis.

Abishai is the lo-fi noise-rock vehicle of Torrance, California multi-instrumentalist Abishai Smith (aliases DJ Bathtub, Eden, Mizpah), who splatters feedback, drum machines, and kazoo across deliberately unpolished sludge, no wave, and noisecore excursions. The 43-track 'Raw and Legendary!!!' (2017) is a maximalist, comedic blowout of punk-metal bits, while the wider catalog under various aliases swings into death industrial, drone, power electronics, and ambient territory — DIY extremity closer to a bedroom noise scene than conventional metal songcraft.

Human Impact are a New York noise-rock supergroup formed in 2019, welding Chris Spencer's Unsane fury to Jim Coleman's Cop Shoot Cop-derived industrial electronics. The debut lineup added the Swans rhythm section of Chris Pravdica and Phil Puleo; their self-titled debut appeared on Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings in 2020, followed by Gone Dark (2024). By 2024 the rhythm section had turned over to ex-Daughters drummer Jon Syverson and ex-Made Out of Babies bassist Eric Cooper.

Space Streakings were a Japanese noise-rock quartet active 1993-1996, formed by four Tokyo-underground video-game programmers who performed under aliases (Captain Insect, Kame Bazooka, Karate Condor, Screaming Stomach). Their sound was a hysterical barrage of shouted Japanese vocals, skronking saxophone and trumpet, whistles, samples and galloping electronic percussion, associated with Chicago's Skin Graft Records 'Now Wave' cohort. Steve Albini flew to Japan to record their second album 7-Toku (1994). They disbanded in 1996 after Screaming Stomach left.

Head of David were a Birmingham-area experimental/industrial-metal band formed in 1986 and signed to Blast First, whose abrasive noise-rock was once described as being about as harsh as music can get 'without descending into pure noise.' Their releases include Dustbowl (1988) and Seed State (1991). Justin Broadrick drummed for the group from 1987 to 1989, a stint between his early stretch in Napalm Death and the founding of Godflesh.

Qui are a Los Angeles noise-rock group formed in 2000 by Paul Christensen (drums/vocals) and Matt Cronk (guitar/vocals) as a guitar-and-drums duo mixing punk, noise and experimental rock with tight vocal harmonies. In 2006, after a run of guest appearances, David Yow of The Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid joined as full-time vocalist, fronting the 2007 album Love's Miracle. That record was released on Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings.

Made Out of Babies were a Brooklyn noise-rock/sludge quartet active 2004-2012, fronted by the extraordinary Julie Christmas, whose lurching between whisper and shriek gave the band its volatile character. They released Trophy (2005) and The Ruiner (2008), with the Steve Albini-recorded Coward (2006) widely rated their high point; early records came out on Neurosis's Neurot Recordings. The lineup drew from the wider New York heavy underground, with guitarist Brendan Tobin (Red Sparowes), bassist Eric Cooper, and Christmas also fronting Battle of Mice.

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra is an American rock/alternative-metal supergroup founded in 2012 by guitarist Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, melding hard rock and progressive metal. Its lineup drew members from various established acts: Brent Hinds of Mastodon (guitar), William DuVall of Alice in Chains (vocals), Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta (drums), and bassist Pete Griffin (Dethklok, Zappa Plays Zappa). The band released its debut LP, Broken Lines, on September 23, 2016 via Party Smasher Records, reaching #85 on the Billboard 200.
