The Earls of Mars

United Kingdom · formed 2012 · last active 2015

The Earls of Mars are a genre-hopping doom/prog outfit from Hampshire, England (not Long Island as some sources misreport), fronted by the theatrical, jazz-flecked vocals of Harry Armstrong over Dan Hardingham's riff-heavy guitar work. Their self-titled 2013 debut (Candlelight Records) careens from sludgy doom riffs into jazz-inflected noodling, whimsical prog detours, and punk-satire, drawing critical comparisons to Tom Waits, Bowie, Queen, Alice Cooper, Voivod, and Faith No More. The band leans into absurdist, theatrical songwriting rather than straight metal orthodoxy.

WHY THOSE SCORES

  • Jazzy 4Reviewers note the album 'throws in some elements of jazz' amid jazz-inflected noodling (thesleepingshaman.com review).
  • Hardcore 3Reviews compare the punk-satire moments to Dead Kennedys-style aggression within an otherwise proggy record.
  • Technical 6Reviewers invoke Voivod and describe 'tunnels of terrifying technical ecstasy' in the songwriting.
  • Theatrical 6Vocalist Harry Armstrong's delivery and the album's Bowie/Queen/Alice Cooper/Rocky Horror comparisons point to overt musical-theatre framing; themes are billed as 'absurd fiction' and 'humour.'
  • Doom 6Genre-tagged Doom Metal/Psychedelic/Progressive Rock; reviews describe a 'doom-laden... sludge-fest' base under the eclecticism.

Potmos Hetoimos is the long-running one-man progressive sludge/doom project of Baltimore's Matt Matheson, active since 2006. The 2018 album Vox Medusae (Not Music) recast a concept about pornography addiction as a nine-voice Greek drama, weaving saxophone and piano into blackened-hardcore-inflected sludge, with jazz/funk touches. The record was mixed and mastered by Angel Marcloid (Fire-Toolz).

    Oxbow
    TheatricalTechnicalJazzy

Oxbow were a San Francisco experimental/noise-rock band founded in 1988, built on the partnership of vocalist Eugene S. Robinson and multi-instrumentalist and composer Niko Wenner. Their music blends noise rock, avant-garde jazz, musique concrete and blues into caustic, paranoid soundscapes framed by Robinson's high, anguished voice. Their eighth and final album, Love's Holiday (2023), was their first for Ipecac Recordings; the band dissolved in 2024.

    Faith No More
    TechnicalTheatricalJazzy

San Francisco shape-shifters who smuggled funk, hip-hop, synth-pop, thrash, lounge and film-score bombast into stadium-sized alternative metal, peaking commercially with The Real Thing (1989) and creatively with the gloriously perverse Angel Dust (1992). When Mike Patton was poached from Mr. Bungle in 1988, the band became the primary launchpad for his sprawling avant-garde universe — making Faith No More the closest thing this atlas has to a mainstream gateway drug. Few bands did more to convince metal that genre borders were optional.

    Melvins
    DoomTechnicalTheatrical

Formed in Montesano, Washington in 1983 around the constant core of Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover, Melvins fused punk with a heavy Black Sabbath influence and in doing so godfathered sludge metal, leaving fingerprints on everything from grunge to doom and stoner rock. Relentlessly prolific shapeshifters, they have cycled through bassists and configurations — including the Kevin Rutmanis era and the double-bass-driven Melvins Lite with Trevor Dunn — while releasing a torrent of albums on Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings since 1999. Their gravitational pull is such that Japan's Boris took their name from the title of a Melvins song, and collaborators have ranged from Fantômas and Jello Biafra to Lustmord and Napalm Death.

    Mastodon
    TechnicalTheatricalDoom

Mastodon is an American heavy metal band formed in Atlanta in 2000, fusing sludge and stoner metal with progressive rock, hardcore aggression and jazz-influenced drumming into an ambitious, concept-driven sound. Their breakthrough Leviathan (2004), a song cycle built around Moby-Dick, established them as one of the most original and influential American metal bands of the 21st century, and later records like Crack the Skye (2009) pushed further into psychedelic prog territory. The classic four-piece held together for 25 years until guitarist Brent Hinds split with the band in March 2025 and died in a motorcycle accident that August; three of the four members trade lead vocals, giving the band its distinctive multi-voiced attack.
