Ar'lyxkq'wr is a UK/US dissonant blackened death metal project formed in 2022, releasing a rapid string of full-lengths and EPs (Ss'unnhl, N'yxlwrr, R'ynn'wr(yx), Nry'lwn(rh)) through the Centipede Abyss collective/label. Its cryptic, unpronounceable apostrophe-and-diacritic-laden song and album titles mirror a compositional approach aimed at 'disintegrating' the vocabulary of technical death metal — pushing beyond Portal- and Gorguts'-Obscura-style dissonance into near-total structural collapse. Members perform under similarly cryptic pseudonyms and are tied to a cluster of like-minded underground projects (Apothecary, Cave, Act of Entropy) within the same scene.

Strapping Young Lad is Devin Townsend's industrial/thrash/death metal band, active 1994–2007 with a stable lineup of Townsend, guitarist Jed Simon, bassist Byron Stroud and drummer Gene Hoglan (also of Dark Angel, Death, Testament). Built on polyrhythmic riffing and blast beats, the band is best known for a hyper-dense, multitracked "wall of sound" production style critics compared to Phil Spector and Frank Zappa, drawing on the harsh industrial/noise lineage of Foetus and White Noise. City (1997) was the critical breakthrough; The New Black (2006) leaned back into the band's tongue-in-cheek black humor before their 2007 disbandment.

Carnival in Coal was a French extreme/avant-garde metal duo formed in Amiens in 1995 by vocalist Arno Strobl and multi-instrumentalist Axel Wursthorn, active until 2007 (briefly revived 2014). The band mixed death and black metal with disco, pop, reggae, and chamber-rock elements under a recurring carnival/circus concept, releasing albums via War On Majors, Season of Mist, and Earache's Elitist imprint. Critics drew comparisons to Faith No More/Mr. Bungle, Frank Zappa, and John Zorn for the band's genre-defying juxtapositions.

A joke-theatrical death metal side-project fronted (in disguise, as 'Neck Head') by Mr. Bungle/Secret Chiefs 3 mastermind Trey Spruance, Faxed Head plays crude, filthy death metal wrapped in a fictional premise — a masked cast of disfigured Coalinga, California classmates. Despite the gag conceit the musicianship is unmistakably Bungle-adjacent, and the project's small discography (Uncomfortable But Free, Exhumed at Birth, Chiropractic) circulated through Spruance's own Web of Mimicry label. It reads less as an 'avant-garde' entry than as a comedic, straight-ahead death-metal curiosity kept alive by its pedigree.

Ensoph is an Italian avant-garde gothic/industrial metal project from Venice, active from 1997 (emerging from the prog-doom band Endaymynion) into the 2010s and signed at various points to Cruz del Sur Music. Their name, Hebrew for 'infinity,' signals the band's abiding interest in esotericism, Kabbalah and apocalyptic theology, filtered through a sound that moved from dense avant-garde gothic metal on early records toward techno/industrial-driven arrangements by 2009's Rex Mundi X-Ile. Critics likened aspects of their sound to The Kovenant and Marilyn Manson, though the arrangements were often described as 'busy' to the point of overcrowded.

Dethklok is the real-world melodic death metal act behind Brendon Small's animated series Metalocalypse, with Small performing guitars, lead vocals, bass and keyboards and Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad, Death, Dark Angel) on drums since the 2007 debut The Dethalbum. Powered by Hoglan's blast beats and Small's technical shredding, the studio project became the highest-charting death metal act in Billboard 200 history at the time. Its over-the-top satirical concept culminated in the sung-through metal opera The Doomstar Requiem (2013). The touring lineup has drawn on Zappa/Vai-school virtuosos including Bryan Beller, Mike Keneally and Nili Brosh.

Azure Emote is an avant-garde death metal project founded in New York in 2003 by illustrator/vocalist Mike Hrubovcak (Monstrosity, Vile) as an outlet 'to express personal negativity without the genre limitations often present within Extreme Metal.' Built around a core band with guitarist Ryan Moll, bassist Kelly Conlon, drummer Mike Heller and violinist Pete Johansen, the project layers in shifting rosters of guest musicians — female vocalists, saxophone, harmonica, keyboards — to give nearly every song its own distinct color. Releases including The Gravity of Impermanence (2013) and The Third Perspective (2020) have come out on Selfmadegod Records.

Zelophilia is the solo studio project of Lou Kelly, based in Ukiah, California, releasing one full-length, Lust, Loathing & Love, in December 2011. Blends death metal, hardcore, and mathcore with baroque classical touches and absurdist, humor-laced songwriting.

Voidstar Nocturnal is a progressive blackened death metal trio from Heredia, Costa Rica, formed in 2023 by musicians from Corpse Garden, Deiphago and Advent of Bedlank-adjacent scenes, evolving directly out of Corpse Garden. Guitarist Fabian Salas, bassist Kevin Moran, and drummer/synth player Erick Mejía Arguedas, joined by guest vocalist Roy Zumbado Cognuchz (TŴR, Advent of Bedlam), recorded the debut LP "Nexus Teleport Fracture" (Godz ov War Productions, 2026) live over three days at Colin Marston's Menegroth Studios in New York with no edits, triggers, or overdubs. Critics describe a surreal, psychedelic fusion of dissonant death/black metal with electro-industrial synths, post-punk/darkwave atmosphere, and a cosmic sci-fi/occult concept.
