Between the Buried and Me are an American progressive metal band formed in 2000 in Raleigh, North Carolina, spanning progressive metalcore, technical death metal and avant-garde metal. Their genre-hopping suites mix death growls and cleans with sweep-picked leads that draw on bluegrass and jazz, plus ambient 'space music' passages and acoustic balladry.

Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects is the solo project of Meshuggah lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, whose lone album Sol Niger Within (1997) is a landmark of avant-garde metal. Structured as one continuous 43-minute composition indexed into 29 tracks, it grafts Meshuggah's mathematical rhythmic language onto the fluid, Allan Holdsworth-inspired jazz-fusion soloing Thordendal is known for. The record's dense, free-associative sprawl draws comparisons to John Zorn's Naked City and features a cast of Swedish improvisers.

Azure Emote is an avant-garde death metal project founded in New York in 2003 by illustrator/vocalist Mike Hrubovcak (Monstrosity, Vile) as an outlet 'to express personal negativity without the genre limitations often present within Extreme Metal.' Built around a core band with guitarist Ryan Moll, bassist Kelly Conlon, drummer Mike Heller and violinist Pete Johansen, the project layers in shifting rosters of guest musicians — female vocalists, saxophone, harmonica, keyboards — to give nearly every song its own distinct color. Releases including The Gravity of Impermanence (2013) and The Third Perspective (2020) have come out on Selfmadegod Records.

Orgone is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania avant-garde extreme-metal band formed in 2006, beginning as a technical deathgrind outfit (Accumulator, The Goliath) before drifting toward a genre-agnostic progressive death sound. The Joyless Parson (recorded 2008, released 2014) and Pleroma (2024) fold acoustic/chamber instrumentation, cello, jazz voicings and post-metal atmosphere into their knotty tech-death, with the band openly describing itself as unclassifiable. It stands as a cult, self-releasing act on the experimental fringe of American death metal.

Eigenstate Zero is the solo project of Stockholm metal veteran Christian Ludvigsson, launched in 2018 to fuse progressive death metal with Frank Zappa-style jazz-fusion excess. Across Sensory Deception, Machinery of Night, The Malthusian and Shape of God Thought of Sun, Ludvigsson stacks odd time signatures and weird electronic/synth textures over a death-metal chassis, filling 'passages of eclectic weirdness' between the heavy sections.

Rivers of Nihil are a Reading, Pennsylvania band who wrote a four-album cycle with one season each, and turned the autumn record into the one everybody names first. Where Owls Know My Name (2018) put a saxophone in the middle of a technical death metal album — three solos and atmospheric passages from Burial in the Sky's Zach Strouse, with cello and trumpet around them — and it landed because the songs were already long, cinematic and keyboard-shaded, with somewhere for a horn to go. Brody Uttley's keys and programming carry that atmosphere; Adam Biggs moved from bass to lead vocals in 2022, and the self-titled 2025 album was written with no dedicated frontman at all. The saxophone stayed, which is the tell: the band deliberately refused to be 'the sax band' and kept using it anyway, as one more colour rather than a gimmick to retire.

Forgotten Silence is a long-running Czech experimental/progressive metal band from Rosice, near Brno, founded in 1993 and still active. Fronted by Krusty (bass, vocals) alongside guitarists Medvěd and Hyenik, keyboardist Marty, drummer Čepa, and vocalist Petr Ševčík, the band moved from a death-metal-with-art-rock foundation on early albums toward the fully genre-dissolving 2006 LP "Kro Ni Ka," a mostly-instrumental, spoken-word record blending prog, jazz, ambient and Eastern folk textures that won a Razor Award for album of the year. Seven studio albums deep (through 2023's "Vemork Konstrukt"), the band is consistently described by critics as defying genre classification.

Tantric Bile is the solo avant-death/free-jazz project of North American multi-instrumentalist Matt Stephens, who also leads Effluence and Neural Indent; the name is a nod to a Painkiller track. Since 2021 it has released a steady stream of albums on Stephens' own Putrefactive Recordings, blending guttural goregrind vocals with squealing saxophone-adjacent woodwinds, film samples and John Zorn/Naked City-style jump-cut composition, often joined by regular Effluence collaborators Paul Acuña and Ollie Burgess.

The Deserts of Traun (stylized TRAUN) is an experimental, multi-genre metal project from Santa Barbara, California, founded and largely composed by drummer Dave Murray, formerly of Estradasphere. Its self-titled 2003 debut features Murray on numerous instruments alongside contributions from Estradasphere guitarist Jason Schimmel and others, blending metal, jazz, progressive rock and soundtrack styles. Murray later carried the project's polyrhythmic-metal sensibility into High Castle Teleorkestra.

Neural Indent is the solo, guitarless death/goregrind project of M.S. (Matt Stephens), who builds brutal death-metal vocals and grind structures entirely out of synths, keyboards, bass, and drum programming. Released mostly through Putrefactive Recordings, the project has been described as a spiritual sequel to fellow guitarless act Effluence, swapping riffs for synth textures that critics compare to Demilich filtered through Tangerine Dream, with occasional free-jazz/gorenoise detours. It sits at an unusual intersection of brutal death metal and synth-driven experimentalism rather than any conventional metal instrumentation.
