Post-black metal duo from Saint Petersburg, Russia, active as Swampborn since 2011. Guitarist Pathrone and vocalist Sur released their debut full-length Beyond Ratio via Hypnotic Dirge Records in 2022, weaving brass, violin, cello and accordion into a black-metal core across a concept narrative about existential horror and urban decay.

Dëgénéréscence is a French black metal project, active since 2019, centered on the musician known as Infämie, who handles vocals and all instruments. The project is affiliated with the Cërcle Mortüaire collective (alongside Feuille Morte, Mortuaire, Olatom Amespïrïa and others) and released albums such as Hélas ! Je n'étais pas fait pour cette haine... (2020) and ...Ainsi ! Nous dansâmes aux limbes détestées... (2022) through Drakkar Productions. Its sound is catalogued as depressive/atmospheric black metal shading into blackgaze, pairing raw riffing with piano-led, ambience-forward passages.

A Forest of Stars is a British avant-garde black metal band formed 2007 in Leeds, wrapping tremolo black metal in folk instrumentation (violin, flute), psychedelia and an elaborate Victorian 'Gentlemen's Club' concept set in 1898. Across five albums (debut The Corpse of Rebirth, 2008; through Grave Mounds and Grave Mistakes, 2018, on Lupus Lounge) they range from 'blistering black metal fury' to 'opium dreamscapes.' Spoken narration, steampunk pseudonyms and hand-built artwork make the theatrical framing central.

Tormentor is the Hungarian black-metal band (Budapest, 1986) whose vocalist Attila Csihar went on to define Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas; their own catalog runs from the foundational proto-black-metal of Anno Domini to the far stranger Recipe Ferrum (2000, Avantgarde Music), which wraps Hungarian-folklore imagery, orchestral samples, and a theatrical Dracula narrative around the riffing. It sits at the root of second-wave black metal rather than inside any later avant-garde scene, connected to the wider atlas chiefly through Csihar's own subsequent collaborations.

Beannachd Leibh is the Toronto solo project of Alec McKay (formerly recording as Crux), pairing melody-driven black metal in the vein of Blut Aus Nord with the twisting, prog-damaged structures of Kayo Dot and Time of Orchids. Debut full-length Walking in His Works (2025) stretches songs past nine minutes, mixing blasting extremity with symphonic passages and near-hallucinatory melodic detours. It's black metal built for patience — technically dense and unwilling to settle into a single mode for long.

Lengsel are a Norwegian progressive/avant-garde 'unblack' metal band formed in 1995, whose 2000 debut Solace won a following for its atmospheric, experimental take on black metal. The band is tightly bound to Extol: guitarist Tor Magne Glidje joined Extol in 1999 (first on bass, later guitar) and, over time, all three Lengsel members became members of Extol. The overlap left Lengsel a largely studio-bound project.

Laster is a Dutch avant-garde black metal trio from Utrecht, active since 2012, that has steadily dissolved conventional black metal form into a hybrid of art rock, new wave, and shoegaze. Their Dutch-language lyrics dwell on love, distress, and identity across albums like Ons vrije fatum and Andermans mijne. In 2023 they toured Europe as support for Japanese avant-garde metal veterans Sigh.

Urarv is the avant-black-metal vehicle of Björn 'Aldrahn' Dencker, founding vocalist of Dødheimsgard, conceived in 2003 during a stay in a mental institution and originally aimed at 'true Norwegian folkish black metal' before mutating into something stranger. Across Aurum (2017), Argentum (2018), and Substratum — recorded 2013, finished 2021/22 — it channels Ved Buens Ende-style dissonant terror and folkloric black-metal mutation through Aldrahn's singular howled vocal delivery, positioned by the band itself as parallel to, not part of, the black metal mainstream.

London's Sea Mosquito wrap raw black metal in ambient synth haze and echo-drenched production, favoring atmospheric wash over riff-forward songwriting - tremolo guitar and drums function as background texture behind cascading, almost lead-like drumming. Their 2025 album Majestas (I, Voidhanger Records) explores religious ecstasy across cultures, with harsh vocals occasionally giving way to spoken passages in English and Arabic. They sit closer to psychedelic/atmospheric black metal than to the death-metal-adjacent avant-garde acts on this chart, but the noise-and-texture-first approach is exactly the kind of unorthodox BM the label built its name on.

Hail Spirit Noir is a Greek band from Thessaloniki (formed 2010) that welds 1970s psychedelic and progressive rock — vintage organ, synth and mellotron textures — onto a modern second-wave black metal frame. Founded by Haris and Theoharis, both veterans of the prog outfit Rex Mundi and the avant/symphonic project Transcending Bizarre?, the band cultivates an occult, horror-tinged atmosphere across concept albums, drifting further into synth-forward territory on Eden in Reverse. Frequently filed alongside Oranssi Pazuzu and Arcturus as psychedelic/avant-garde black metal.
