Dornenreich
Austria · formed 1995 · last active 2021
Dornenreich is an Austrian melodic black metal band formed in 1996 by Jochen 'Eviga' Stock, distinguished by its 'neofolk influenced' sound built around acoustic guitar, percussion, and Thomas 'Inve' Riesner's violin. Across nine studio albums on Prophecy Productions (1997-2021), German-language lyrics and an increasingly ambient, acoustic-leaning palette have accompanied a reputation for theatrical, tightly staged live shows, including a multi-camera concert film shot at Summer Breeze 2007.

- UnaffiliatedEI 16The FirstbornFolkBlackTheatrical
A Portuguese act from Amora/Lisboa that began in the black metal underground of the mid-90s (initially as Firstborn Evil) before renaming in 1999 and turning toward an avant-garde, Buddhist-themed sound steeped in Eastern instrumentation — sitar, Tibetan horn, ritual chant — layered over progressive extreme metal. Best known for 2008's The Noble Search and 2012's Lions Among Men, praised in the underground press for genuinely fusing world-music textures into metal rather than treating them as garnish.
- UnaffiliatedEI 16그슨대 (Gsndae)BlackFolkTheatrical
그슨대 (Gsndae) is a South Korean avant-garde depressive black metal project from Pocheon-si, active since 2018, released via the black metal circle 'Black Poets.' Its sole full-length, 傳說 (Korean Tales) (2018), fuses DSBM/atmospheric black metal with Korean traditional instrumentation and pansori narrative-singing technique, framed as a journey through Korean dark folklore. The project is written, produced and mostly performed by a single artist under the alias 아체 (Arche), with session musicians on guitar and bass.
- UnaffiliatedEI 11Noble DéchetBlackFolkTheatrical
Noble Déchet is a Quebec City black metal project active since 2020, built around Le Mangeur de Feuilles Mortes (vocals, guitar, bass, double bass, organ) and Jean-Guilde (drums, vocals). RateYourMusic tags and user reviews mark them as avant-garde/folk black metal, layering 'weird folk and pagan esoterica' over raw, occult-themed black metal, with the project's own promotional voice leaning hard into absurdist, self-mythologizing humor.
- UnaffiliatedEI 16KaátaìraBlackFolkAmbient
Kaátaìra (also rendered Kaatayra) is the one-man project of Caio Lemos from Brasília, Brazil, blending atmospheric black metal with acoustic, regional Brazilian folk music. Across albums such as 'Inpariquipê' (2021) and 'Caminhos de Água' (2026, on Avantgarde sublabel Flowing Downward), rasped black-metal fury is threaded through acoustic guitar, folk instrumentation and drawn-out ambient passages. 'Caminhos de Água' is a river-themed suite that even weaves in spoken word from the artist's grandmother.
- UnaffiliatedEI 15MidoranBlackAmbientTheatrical
Midoran is the solo dark-fantasy project of French multi-instrumentalist Athal'Zacker, part of the Cercle Mortuaire collective alongside acts like Degenerescence and Mortuaire. Its prolific catalog alternates between raw, melodic black metal and synthesizer-driven dungeon synth passages, built around an ongoing fantasy narrative (Zolaria, Merozia, the Athal'Zackar mythos) in a vein reminiscent of Nuit Noire or Trha. Releases favor world-building atmosphere and lore over technical ambition.
- UnaffiliatedEI 19AnubiBlackFolkTheatrical
Anubi were a Lithuanian avant-garde/experimental black metal band from Kaunas, active 1992-2002, built around frontman Martynas Meskauskas ('Lord Ominous,' also a noted painter) and themed around death and Egyptian mythology. Their sole full-length, Kai pilnaties akis uzmerks mirtis (1997, Danza Ipnotica Records), wove piano, saxophone, accordion, and natural sound recordings into their black metal, and was reissued in 2025 by Inferna Profundus Records. The band dissolved after Meskauskas drowned in a sailing accident on Lake Michigan in March 2002.
- UnaffiliatedEI 14Crestfallen DuskBlackFolkAmbient
Crestfallen Dusk is a mostly one-man Tennessee project led by Ryan Clackner (also of Primeval Well, Vile Haint, and StumpTail) that reimagines black metal through the lens of Mississippi Hill Country blues, citing Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside as touchstones. The 2022 self-titled debut (Moonlight Cypress Archetypes) pairs blast beats and blackened shrieks with twangy, reverb-drenched blues guitar recorded on a vintage 1958 Fender Musicmaster. Sean Meyers (drums) and Zac Ormerod (lyrics/mixing) round out the record's credits.
- UnaffiliatedEI 17DramanduhrBlackFolkTheatrical
Dramanduhr is a one-man Sicilian avant-garde/Mediterranean metal project by songwriter-producer Stefano Eliamo, formed in 2020 and built around an invented ritual mythology (the "Rite of the Volcano") and its own glossolalia language, Dahrmonium. Eliamo performs all vocals, guitars, bass, drums, percussion and synths himself, augmented on the debut by guest viola and soprano vocals. The project has released two full albums to date, Tramohr (2022, BloodRock Records/Nero Corvino) and Vertuhn (2025), fusing black-metal-styled blasts and chugs with orchestral, tribal and esoteric-occult atmospheres.
- UnaffiliatedEI 11Tok YathraaFolkBlackTheatrical
Tok Yathraa is the one-man 'Bomoh Metal' project of a Singaporean musician (previously of local acts Demonification and Ironfist), fusing black and heavy metal with Southeast Asian ghost folklore. Since the 2020 debut EP 'Chapter: Kuntilanak,' each entry in the ongoing 'Chapter' series is a concept record built around a single regional spirit - toyol, pocong, orang minyak, hantu jepun, genderuwo - with the artist citing King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, and Malay singer SM Salim as touchstones for its theatrical, horror-folklore-driven songwriting. Live performances add hired bassist Joa DC and drummer Demonomancer.
- UnaffiliatedEI 14TormentorBlackTheatricalFolk
Tormentor is the Hungarian black-metal band (Budapest, 1986) whose vocalist Attila Csihar went on to define Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas; their own catalog runs from the foundational proto-black-metal of Anno Domini to the far stranger Recipe Ferrum (2000, Avantgarde Music), which wraps Hungarian-folklore imagery, orchestral samples, and a theatrical Dracula narrative around the riffing. It sits at the root of second-wave black metal rather than inside any later avant-garde scene, connected to the wider atlas chiefly through Csihar's own subsequent collaborations.
