Count to Altek
Count to Altek is the revolving-door experimental project of Ohio musician Myles Oliver (keyboard, production, sampling), joined on the 2024 album Birds by drummer/co-producer Andrew Bittner, released via Oliver's Millicent Waffles Bandcamp imprint. The catalog — Son of Ra (2015), Path Kethona (2018), Birds (2024) — is self-tagged "raw black metal" alongside free jazz, jazz fusion, doom jazz, krautrock, and ambient, an unusually wide genre spread for a single project. Birds' five tracks were, per the album's own Bandcamp notes, "done during a single improvisational session" in early March 2024, spanning breakbeat/drum-and-bass, ambient, and jazz-fusion passages within one recording.

Tabernacle ov Thee Flesh is a Brazilian avant-garde/experimental black metal project from Joinville, released via Ultra Gash Records, featuring Naboth E. Coli (vocals, keyboards), L. Borgia Rossetti (guitar, also of Esmectatons and Os Legais) and Leal Barroso (drums, also of Esmectatons and Zombie Cookbook). - UnaffiliatedEI 12MalconfortJazzyAmbientBlack
Malconfort is a London trio named after a Deathspell Omega song, and on their 2024 debut Humanism (Transcending Obscurity Records) they take black metal apart from the inside. Guitarist/synthesist Fas, vocalist Nuun, and drummer/vocalist/synth player Kopczak build songs around dubbed-out basslines and jazz- and electronic-indebted drumming, with jutting, non-cyclical song structures. Harsh vocals appear sparingly, interlaced with whispers, barely audible crooning, laughter and spoken-word asides, drawing critical comparisons to Virus, Oranssi Pazuzu, and Mick Harris's Scorn.
- UnaffiliatedEI 14NirrtiJazzyBlackAmbient
Nirrti is a solo psychedelic black metal project based in Orlová, Czechia, signed to Depressive Illusions Records. The project's music has been described as eerie, dissonant, and 'progressive black metal played through the lens of psychedelics and jazz,' aiming to convey darkness, uncertainty, and glimpses of other dimensions rather than adhering to traditional black metal norms. Releases include 'Psychonautix' (2022), 'Palindromos' (2023), and 'Cyberpsychosis' (2024), the latter continuing the project's cyber/psychedelic conceptual throughline.
- UnaffiliatedEI 16KekalJazzyAmbientBlack
Kekal is an Indonesian avant-garde/experimental act formed in Jakarta in 1995, one of the first Southeast Asian extreme-metal bands to reach an international audience. Beginning in black/death metal, they transformed across their discography into a genre-collapsing project spanning progressive metal, jazz fusion, trip-hop, electronic/IDM, ambient and post-rock — the 2003 breakthrough 1000 Thoughts of Violence being the pivot. Since August 2009 the band has operated as a 'memberless' collective, with former members and volunteer contributors assembling new albums.
- UnaffiliatedEI 29YureiJazzyAmbientTechnical
Yurei is the solo avant-garde metal alias of Oslo musician Bjeima, who writes, performs, and produces every element himself. Bjeima crafts icy, jazz-inflected, dissonant music that draws on the Ved Buens Ende/Virus lineage of Norwegian avant-garde black metal while resisting straightforward genre classification. Debut album 'Working Class Demon' (2010) was released on Adversum Records, followed by 'Night Vision' (2012).
- UnaffiliatedEI 16Steve BlancoJazzyAmbientTechnical
Steve Blanco is the bassist and keyboardist of New York avant-garde metal act Imperial Triumphant, but his solo catalog runs on piano: the jazz-rooted Steve Blanco Trio records (Contact, Piano Warrior) gave way to increasingly extreme solo works like Misztikus and 2026's Shadow Arc Suite. The latter pairs virtuosic, Coltrane-indebted improvisation and modernist/serialist piano writing with programmed blast beats, atonal guitar, and ambient textures — an 'extreme ensemble' piece dragging free jazz and metal violence into the same room.
- UnaffiliatedEI 15NoosefillerAmbientBlackGlitch
Noosefiller is a South Lake Tahoe, California project centered on Loren Zibull (synthesizers, samples, drum programming, production, vocals) and Christophe Bassett (guitar, vocals, saxophone), with A.O.S Heirdrain contributing vocals/lyrics, releasing through Deafbox Industries. Their self-titled 2017 album is tagged atmospheric and psychedelic black metal alongside IDM, industrial metal, dark ambient, and avant-garde metal on Bandcamp, reflecting a sound that folds electronic programming and saxophone into a blackened, atmospheric metal base; the artist's wider Bandcamp tag cloud also includes atmospheric sludge metal, progressive metal, and noise rock.
- UnaffiliatedEI 16KyomdarakAmbientBlackTechnical
Kyomdarak is a Japanese atmospheric/experimental black metal project from Gifu Prefecture, active since 2007 with a large self-released Bandcamp catalog (kyomdarak.bandcamp.com). Its sound favors drum-machine-driven rhythmic patterns, warbling synth atmospherics, and low-key drones layered under raw black-metal riffing rather than blast-beat aggression. Albums include "mugen" (2016), "Night and Sleep," and "A new ecosystem" (2024).
- UnaffiliatedEI 11DolaAmbientJazzyBlack
Dola are a Polish avant-garde black metal trio formed in Poznań in 2018 and now based in Toruń. Their sound couples a dissonant, aggressive black-metal backbone with ritual ambient, sludge/post-metal heaviness and pronounced jazz elements, the latter carried by Maras's trumpet. Recent album 'Tabernakulum' (2024, Piranha Music) swings between brutal dissonance and the atmospheric avant-garde passages that define the band.
- UnaffiliatedEI 15Ætheria ConscientiaAmbientJazzyBlack
Ætheria Conscientia is a progressive black metal quintet from Nantes, France, formed in 2016, known for using saxophone as a core instrumental voice rather than an occasional flourish. Across three albums — 'Tales From Hydhradh' (2018), 'Corrupted Pillars of Vanity' (2021), and 'The Blossoming' (2024) — the band pursues a continuing science-fiction concept about humanity fleeing a ruined Earth, blending black metal with progressive rock, jazz, ambient, and psychedelic textures. Critics place them at the crossroads of Oranssi Pazuzu, Mastodon, and Enslaved.
