Montreal trio blending sludge and death metal weight with jazz-inflected saxophone, ambient dronescapes, and psychedelic textures across long-form concept albums. Their 2022 record Hivemind unfolds as a continuous sci-fi narrative about first contact with an insectoid hivemind, drawing comparisons to early Mastodon, Dvne, Neurosis, and Oranssi Pazuzu. Formed from the ashes of Montreal band The Wild Hunt in December 2016, the band restructured as a three-piece in January 2021 with all members sharing vocal duties and reaching for non-traditional instrumentation.

Ehnahre is a Boston, Massachusetts experimental extreme metal ensemble formed in 2006 by former Kayo Dot members Ryan McGuire and John Carchia, fusing contemporary classical composition, aleatoric music, and doom/death metal extremity. The group avoids original lyrics, instead setting texts by modernist poets to dense, largely through-composed pieces built from extended technique and free improvisation.

A Chicago/Minneapolis improv-death quartet (with members of Zebulon Pike, Celestiial, and Obsequiae) whose albums are single continuous live improvisations rather than composed songs, splicing death metal's blast-and-growl violence with doom lumber, free-jazz harmolodics, and drone-thick ambience. The band cites John Zorn's Naked City and Ornette Coleman's harmolodic concepts as explicit touchstones, assigning time-boxed solo/duo segments to a stopwatch instead of a setlist. 2025's 'Enter the Misanthropocene' pushed further into jazz noodling and grind intensity relative to its drone-heavier 2022 debut.

Plague Organ is a Dutch guitar-less avant-garde black/death metal duo of drummer Rene Aquarius (Dead Neanderthals, Cryptae, Imperial Cult) and recording engineer Marlon Wolterink (bass, synths), built entirely from bass, drums, and synthesizer. Their 2020 debut Orphan on Sentient Ruin Laboratories is a single 40-minute piece fusing free-form jazz, drone, dark ambient, kraut, and ritualistic black/death metal into what CVLT Nation called a 'suffocating instrumental ambient fractal.' Aquarius is a highly prolific Dutch underground drummer with a sprawling collaborative discography, though no direct tie to an existing E.M.M.A. atlas act was found.

Avant-garde metal sextet from Poznań, Poland, founded in 2019 by guitarist Marcin Tuliszkiewicz and drummer Krzysztof Kulis. Their self-titled debut (10 January 2025) fuses black/death metal harshness with dark jazz, doomy drone and trumpet (Magdalena Andrys), driven by dual vocals between clean singer Julita Dąbrowska and growler Michał Sosnowski.

Kilter is a Brooklyn instrumental jazz-metal trio built around bassist/producer Laurent David, saxophonist Ed Rosenberg III, and Imperial Triumphant drummer Kenny Grohowski. Their records fuse free-jazz horn improvisation with sludge, doom, blast beats and dark ambient, most extremely on 2026's 'Ten Billion Years / Ten', built by recording ten-minute sketches and time-stretching them to forty. It sits at the NYC intersection of avant-jazz and extreme metal that also produced Imperial Triumphant, Secret Chiefs 3 and Titan to Tachyons, all sharing Grohowski behind the kit.

Ingurgitating Oblivion are a German death metal band (active as such since 2002, roots in 1997) built around founder-guitarist Florian Engelke. Their later work, especially Vision Wallows in Symphonies of Light (2017) and Ontology of Nought (2024), moved into progressive, dissonant, avant-garde death metal, lacing Gorguts-style dissonance with jazz guitars, vibraphone, piano and musical saw, and drawing openly on Ligeti, Bartok and jazz. With Defeated Sanity's Lille Gruber on drums for the pivotal 2017 record, they became a fixture of the explorative death-metal underground.

Overmars was a French post-metal band active from 2001 to 2011, formed in Lyon around vocalist Xavier Théret, guitarists Antoine Simon and Pierrick Marin, bassist Marion Leclerc, drummer Benjamin Pic, and keyboardist Tiphaine Coudert. Their 2005 debut Affliction, Endocrine... Vertigo (Candlelight Records) fused doom, industrial, gothic rock, death and black metal into an oppressive, droning, oftentimes sludgy whole, while 2007's Born Again stretched that approach into a single 40-minute piece that NME later named among its 'Twenty Heaviest (Metal) Records of All Time.'

Thecodontion is a Rome-based black/death metal band formed in 2016 around the unusual choice to abandon guitars entirely, building their sound from two finger-picked distorted basses (plus a third for solos), drums, and vocals. Their releases, including the 2020 full-length Supercontinent on I, Voidhanger Records, follow a 'prehistoric metal of death' concept tracing Earth's continental drift and ancient lifeforms. Reviewers note the band moved from a rawer black/death attack toward a more atmospheric, minimalist, and surprisingly melodic sound, punctuated by bass-driven ambient instrumental passages.

Sigihl is a drone/doom/avant-garde metal act from the Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, formed in 2012, describing themselves as 'drone jazz from the hellyard.' Their sole full release, Trauermärsche (and a tango upon the world's grave) (2014, Arachnophobia Records), fuses sludge, doom, drone and black metal with saxophone, funereal atmosphere, and tango-inflected song titles.
