Semen Across Lips was the deliberately shock-named vehicle Garry Brents used from 2004-2007 in Grand Prairie, Texas for a strange, technical black/death/grind hybrid, before renaming the project Parabstruse later in 2007. It's an early, standalone chapter in the prolific Brents catalogue that would later include Cara Neir and the chiptune-flecked Gonemage.

A prog-extreme-metal supergroup uniting Jason McMaster (Watchtower, Dangerous Toys) on vocals, Davide Tiso (Ephel Duath, Botanist) on guitar, and Hannes Grossmann (ex-Necrophagist, Alkaloid) on drums, Howling Sycamore melts thrash, black metal, and old-school prog-metal singing into dense, riff-heavy epics. Their two albums draw a deep guest bench — Marty Friedman and Kevin Hufnagel (Gorguts, Dysrhythmia) on lead guitar, Bruce Lamont on baritone sax — that pulls the sound toward technical/progressive metal more than cross-genre experimentalism. Jamie King of Between the Buried and Me mixed and mastered the sophomore record, Seven Pathways to Annihilation.

Extol is a Norwegian extreme metal band formed in 1993 in Bekkestua, celebrated for a restless fusion of technical and progressive death metal with black metal, thrash, and melodic, prog-rock sensibilities. Emerging from the Christian metal underground, they evolved sharply across records from the blackened death of Burial (1998) to the genre-defying, atmospheric The Blueprint Dives (2005) and the reunion-era self-titled album (2013). The core is built around the Espevoll cousins Peter and Christer alongside longtime drummer David Husvik and multi-instrumentalist Ole Børud. After their hiatus, members Christer Espevoll and David Husvik went on to co-found the international progressive metal band Azusa.

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter are a long-running Weimar, Germany act (formed 1995) whose sound resists easy categorization, fusing melodic death metal, folk metal, power/symphonic metal and Neue Deutsche Härte with punk energy and, in later albums, jazz and ambient touches. Their 2017 album 'Der Rote Reiter' was recorded and released entirely in German, marking a deliberate turn toward their home-language folk-metal identity. The band has toured internationally for three decades and remains active on Nuclear Blast/The End Records.

A Czech alternative-grindcore project that folds jazz-rock/fusion runs, doom-y slow sections and experimental black metal atmosphere into short, poem-set blasts, with guest saxophone thickening the mix. Orgone is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania avant-garde extreme-metal band formed in 2006, beginning as a technical deathgrind outfit (Accumulator, The Goliath) before drifting toward a genre-agnostic progressive death sound. The Joyless Parson (recorded 2008, released 2014) and Pleroma (2024) fold acoustic/chamber instrumentation, cello, jazz voicings and post-metal atmosphere into their knotty tech-death, with the band openly describing itself as unclassifiable. It stands as a cult, self-releasing act on the experimental fringe of American death metal.

Orthrelm are an American avant-garde metal duo from Washington, D.C., Mick Barr on guitar and Josh Blair on drums, specializing in intricately composed guitar-drum instrumentals of vast complexity that straddle extreme metal, avant-garde jazz and progressive rock. Their 2005 album OV, a single 45-minute continuous piece recorded by Colin Marston, was released on Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings and is regarded as a landmark of post-modern experimental composition.

One-man project of linguist Liu Zhenyang (born in Ningbo, China; studying in Paris), Hoplites fuses dissonant black and death metal with mathcore and zeuhl-style repetition, topped with squealing saxophone. All song and album titles are rendered in Greek despite lyrical content addressing Chinese social themes. The project debuted with an EP in 2021, released three full-lengths in 2023, and put the project on an open-ended hiatus in mid-2024 as Zhenyang shifted focus to a new project, Dgra.

Blutmond is a Swiss avant-garde black metal band from Olten, active since the early 2000s, whose lineup includes saxophonist/guitarist Marc (also of Schammasch) alongside vocalist-guitarist John, vocalist-bassist Jerry, guitarist Simon and drummer Fabio. Beginning as a more straightforward black metal act (Endzeit, 2006), the band pivoted toward genre-blending 'urban mysticism' on Thirteen Urban Ways 4 Groovy Bohemian Days (2010) and The Revolution Is Dead! (2012, Code666), the latter folding saxophone, jazz and post-hardcore textures into black metal and drawing guest vocal spots from Anna Murphy (Eluveitie), Managarm (Varg), Markus Baltes (Autumnblaze) and Fredy Schnyder (Nucleus Torn).

Azusa is a multinational progressive extreme metal supergroup formed in 2014 by cousins Christer Espevoll (guitars) and David Husvik (drums) of the Norwegian band Extol, joined by bassist Liam Wilson of The Dillinger Escape Plan and vocalist Eleni Zafiriadou of Sea + Air. Their sound blends melodic thrash, jazz-fusion, hardcore and early-90s riff-pop, a style the band has tongue-in-cheek dubbed "Avant-Thrash." They released their debut album Heavy Yoke in 2018 and the follow-up Loop of Yesterdays in 2020, via Solid State Records (US) and Indie Recordings (Europe).
