Catatonic Effigy is a free-improv/avant-metal trio formed by guitarist Álvaro Domene, bassist/producer Colin Marston, and drummer Mike Caratti, convened at Marston's Menegroth studio in early 2019. Their debut 'Putrid Tendency' (Iluso Records, Nov. 2019) fuses free jazz, minimalism, and 20th-century composition.

Eigenstate Zero is the solo project of Stockholm metal veteran Christian Ludvigsson, launched in 2018 to fuse progressive death metal with Frank Zappa-style jazz-fusion excess. Across Sensory Deception, Machinery of Night, The Malthusian and Shape of God Thought of Sun, Ludvigsson stacks odd time signatures and weird electronic/synth textures over a death-metal chassis, filling 'passages of eclectic weirdness' between the heavy sections.

Tear Light From Matter is a Massachusetts-based instrumental act pairing saxophone with a standard metal rhythm section, self-tagged on Bandcamp as experimental/jazz metal/fusion/prog metal. Their debut, "In Statu Nascendi" (released 25 January 2019, recorded and mixed by Jerry MacDonald at Odd Fellows Recording), sits alongside a further release, "Fœtal Præyers", in a small but pointed discography. Vile Dissonance is the instrumental solo project of Dutch musician Edwin van Koppen, fusing mathcore and technical death-metal aggression with free-jazz harmony and ambient electronics. Across releases such as Metalheads are a Bunch of Conservative Fuckers (2020) and Music Theory Is a Social Convention (2021), phased-out low-tuned HM2 guitars and polyrhythmic drumming sit alongside analog synths and field recordings, with the artist citing touchstones ranging from Meshuggah and Knocked Loose to jazz-fusion guitarists Allan Holdsworth, Fredrik Thordendal and Marc Ribot, and ambient acts Boards of Canada and Air. The result plays like free jazz and mathcore trying to absorb one another.

Dysrhythmia is an instrumental progressive/technical metal trio formed in Philadelphia in 1998 by guitarist Kevin Hufnagel and drummer Jeff Eber, now based in Brooklyn. Bassist Colin Marston — also of Krallice, Behold...The Arctopus, and the reunited Gorguts — joined in 2004, and the band's eight studio albums fuse jazz-inflected chord work, technical/progressive-death riffing, and prog-rock structure into a wordless, largely live-tracked instrumental attack.

Endolith are an extreme progressive metal three-piece from Tromso, Norway, formed 2010 and signed to local label Rob Mules Records. Their concept album 'Chicxulub - The Fossil Record' (2019) refracts the dinosaur-extinction narrative through Meshuggah/Strapping Young Lad-style djent grooves, Gojira-esque crush, Devin Townsend-scale orchestral synth walls, black-metal (Emperor-tinged) tremolo bursts, and electronic programming, arriving at what one reviewer called 'a truly unforgettable trip.'

Combat Astronomy is bassist James Huggett's long-running vehicle for downtuned, Meshuggah-inflected riffing fused with British free jazz — sax, bassoon, and flute from Martin Archer's circle collide with drum-machine noise and industrial grind. Since 1998 the project has moved from IDM-tinged solo recordings toward a horn-heavy ensemble sound critics compare to late-period King Crimson crossed with free jazz. It reads as avant-doom in weight but jazz-fusion in vocabulary, sitting closer to zeuhl and brutal prog than to any conventional metal lineage.

Titan to Tachyons is a New York instrumental quartet led by guitarist Sally Gates, built around a two-bassist frontline (Trevor Dunn and Matt Hollenberg) with drummer Kenny Grohowski, fusing free-jazz improv, prog counterpoint, and metal violence into sci-fi-themed instrumentals. Their 2022 album Vonals was released on John Zorn's Tzadik label (following 2020's Cactides on Nefarious Industries), and the polyrhythmic, two-bass arrangement gives the compositions an unusually dense, contrapuntal low end. Every member's other credits (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, Secret Chiefs 3, Cleric, Imperial Triumphant) wire this band into the Zorn/downtown-jazz and Patton-adjacent avant-metal orbit.

Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects is the solo project of Meshuggah lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal, whose lone album Sol Niger Within (1997) is a landmark of avant-garde metal. Structured as one continuous 43-minute composition indexed into 29 tracks, it grafts Meshuggah's mathematical rhythmic language onto the fluid, Allan Holdsworth-inspired jazz-fusion soloing Thordendal is known for. The record's dense, free-associative sprawl draws comparisons to John Zorn's Naked City and features a cast of Swedish improvisers.

Blind Idiot God is an instrumental trio formed in 1982 in St. Louis, fusing noise rock, dub, funk, free jazz and metal; Greg Ginn signed them to SST Records after hearing their demo. Their 1988 album Undertow was produced by Bill Laswell and featured saxophonist John Zorn, and the full band performed on Laswell's Praxis album Sacrifist (1993) alongside Buckethead, Bootsy Collins and Yamatsuka Eye. Khanate drummer Tim Wyskida joined in 2001 and remains the band's drummer through their 2015 reunion album Before Ever After.
