Ævangelist is a US-based avant-garde black/death metal duo formed in 2010 by Matron Thorn and Ascaris, known for folding saxophone and cello into a nightmarish, dissonant sound. In 2016 the pair released the split EP Codex Obscura Nomina with Blut Aus Nord on Debemur Morti Productions.

Amthrya is an Italian avant-garde death/black metal band founded by guitarist-drummer Barry Yukimura and fronted by vocalist Kasumi Onryō. Their 2022 concept album Passage (Ad Noctem Records/Drakkar Productions), recorded at Black Church studio in Ghemme, Italy, is built around Japanese mythological horror themes of demons and vengeful spirits, rendered through extended, dissonant, depressive-tinged compositions. Guest vocalist Clode of Tethra appears on the title track.

If Nothing Is (stylized/credited as INI on Metal Archives) is a Trondheim, Norway avant-garde metal project fronted by vocalist Boeddelen, guitarists Håkon Grytvik and Mats Stenberg, drummer Vegard Myrdal Berg, and bassist/main composer Lars Emil Måløy — also the bassist of Dødheimsgard. Emerging from the ashes of an earlier band called Revocation around 2008, the group self-released its sprawling, ten-track debut "If Nothing Is" digitally in 2015, later remixed, remastered and issued physically by Dark Essence Records in 2021 with a guest synth/sample contribution from Dødheimsgard's Vicotnik. The record moves through thrash, speed, death and black metal within long-form, technically demanding compositions compared to early Atheist and Cynic.

One-man project of linguist Liu Zhenyang (born in Ningbo, China; studying in Paris), Hoplites fuses dissonant black and death metal with mathcore and zeuhl-style repetition, topped with squealing saxophone. All song and album titles are rendered in Greek despite lyrical content addressing Chinese social themes. The project debuted with an EP in 2021, released three full-lengths in 2023, and put the project on an open-ended hiatus in mid-2024 as Zhenyang shifted focus to a new project, Dgra.

SkyThala are an anonymous American avant-garde/symphonic black metal trio from Tennessee, part of the cryptic Moonlight Cypress Archetypes collective, who debuted with 2022's Boreal Despair on I, Voidhanger Records. Their music fuses the Stravinsky-descended dissonance of Russian modernist classical music with an Emperor-derived symphonic black metal blueprint, weaving oboes, bassoons and trombones through ultra-heavy dissonant-death riffing. The result is a maximalist, sensory-overwhelming collision of 'high art' orchestration and extreme-metal savagery.

Atrorum is a two-person avant-garde/progressive black metal project from Munich, Germany, formed in 1998 by vatroS (guitars, bass, clean vocals, programming) and umbrA (vocals, keyboards, programming). Across three albums on Apathia Records — most notably 2015's Structurae — the band folds symphonic black and death metal into gothic organ, choir, cabaret, funeral-doom, jazz, and industrial-electronic passages, alternating harsh and clean vocals delivered in French, German, and English.

Mysterious, anonymous Polish avant-black-death act on Godz Ov War Productions whose debut Carmina Inferorum (2026) foregrounds trumpet and saxophone over guitars, layering demonic spoken word and industrial/electronic textures into a dissonant black/death frame; reviewers reached for Voivod, Gorguts, Imperial Triumphant, Igorrr, Dødheimsgard, Oranssi Pazuzu and Krallice as touchstones, "but with extra madness."

Avant-garde metal sextet from Poznań, Poland, founded in 2019 by guitarist Marcin Tuliszkiewicz and drummer Krzysztof Kulis. Their self-titled debut (10 January 2025) fuses black/death metal harshness with dark jazz, doomy drone and trumpet (Magdalena Andrys), driven by dual vocals between clean singer Julita Dąbrowska and growler Michał Sosnowski.

Dagtum is a Filipino death metal trio from Pateros formed by veterans of the local extreme-metal underground, including Adam Carlo Along of Legion and brothers Ronaldo Jr. and Ronnel Vivo of Basalt Shrine. Their 2021 debut Revered Decadence (Eastbreath Records) folds dissonant, sludge-thickened death metal into jazz-inflected improvisation and creepy, horror-soundtrack atmosphere, drawing comparisons to Gorguts, Ulcerate and Portal.

Epectase is a Paris duo that folds frantic tremolo-picked black metal into long-form suites of 70s prog, jazz-tinged interludes, and hazy krautrock electronics, sliding between shrieks, operatic cleans, and meditative ambient passages within a single track. Since forming in 2018, multi-instrumentalist Vague and vocalist Avitus have released a steady run of albums and EPs on I, Voidhanger Records and Frozen Records, sitting among the more overtly progressive-rock-indebted corners of the French avant-black underground.
