Mondo Cane is Mike Patton's orchestral love letter to 1950s–60s Italian pop, assembled after his years living in Bologna: a 40-piece orchestra, 15-piece band, and choir behind Patton crooning Neapolitan standards and Ennio Morricone's 'Deep Down', released on his own Ipecac label in 2010. Co-produced and arranged with conductor Daniele Luppi, the recordings were stitched together from live European performances in 2007. It earns its place in an experimental metal atlas as the purest example of where the genre's members go when they leave metal entirely — the Faith No More and Mr. Bungle frontman trading screams for Morricone-era orchestration, and critics compared it favorably to Mr. Bungle's California.

Edge of Reality is a Nashville art-metal quintet whose 2019 album In Static packs jazz-inflected saxophone, carnival theatrics, and djent-adjacent riffing into a maximalist, constantly shifting progressive-metal frame. Reviewers place them alongside Native Construct, Thank You Scientist and Haken: dense, technically ambitious, occasionally overstuffed songwriting paired with a comedic, narrative-driven concept. Guitarist Joey Frevola also plays in UK prog act KYROS and LA's An Endless Sporadic, though neither is part of the EMMA atlas.

Primus are a San Francisco Bay Area experimental rock trio led by bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, whose virtuosic slap-and-tap bass, absurdist storytelling and cartoonish character sketches define a sound that fuses funk, thrash, prog and Americana. Formed in 1984, they broke through with Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda, later returning with records like The Desaturating Seven (2017). Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin, a longtime friend of Claypool's, guested on several early Primus recordings.

The Andretti is the solo recording alias of New Jersey-based multi-instrumentalist Joe Ferrara, who writes, arranges, and produces genre-collapsing records blending surf guitar, spaghetti-western atmosphere, jazz-inflected horns, and Zappa-esque songcraft. Reviewers have compared the project to Mr. Bungle for its harmonic complexity and stylistic whiplash. The 2019 album 'Suicide, Italian Style' features a large supporting cast, including drummer Blake Fleming, the founding drummer of The Mars Volta, alongside a horn section of trumpet, trombone, french horn, and saxophones.

Anthurus d'Archer is a five-piece experimental metal-jazz fusion outfit from Poitiers, France, blending free jazz, industrial textures and avant-garde rock with saxophone, flute, brass, percussion and samples. Their releases lean into absurdist song titles and elaborate visual/theatrical presentation, including a trilogy culminating in the stage-based piece "Le voyage d'André" (2008). The project has self-released steadily since the debut album Plastofilène (2004), often partnering with visual artist Patrice Le Garrec and percussionist Frank Quintard.

Shaolin Death Squad are a theatrical progressive/avant-garde metal band from Denton, Texas, formed around 2001-2002, performing under kung-fu-themed stage personas. Their sound is dynamic prog metal with lead vocalist The White Swan frequently compared to Mike Patton, across releases including Intelligent Design (2006) and a 2024 self-titled record on Soman Records.

Orange Tulip Conspiracy is Estradasphere guitarist Jason Schimmel's own instrumental bandleader project, formed in 2008. Its self-titled debut (Web of Mimicry) moves through prog fusion, 1950s-style jazz, Romani melody and 1960s Italian film-score homage, with Secret Chiefs 3's Trey Spruance and members of Estradasphere guesting.

Oh. is the solo moniker of Greek multi-instrumentalist, composer, and director Olivia Hadjiioannou, who writes, performs, records, and mixes every part of her music herself. Her instrumental progressive-metal EP Metallia (self-released, July 2018) is a six-part concept work built from layered electric/acoustic guitars, violin, keyboards, and shifting time signatures; its 'Red Lion' music video won Best Music Video at multiple festivals, including the French Riviera Film Festival in Cannes.

Confusatron is a genre-hopping avant-garde metal band from Portland, Maine, active on and off since 2001 (a decade-plus hiatus ended with a 2019 return). Songs careen between jazz measures, surf-rock, prog-metal complexity, Italian-opera and Gilbert-and-Sullivan pastiche, and cow-punk within single tracks, drawing frequent press comparisons to Mr. Bungle.

A genre-mashing Bay Area outfit fronted by Marc 'Mirv' Haggard (ex-Limbomaniacs), blending funk, hard rock, country, opera and electronica into concept-album absurdism. Their debut Cosmodrome (1994) was released on Les Claypool's Prawn Song label with Claypool himself guesting on bass as the character 'Grandpa'. Later records leaned into live-show novelty hits like 'Unabomber', earning comparisons to Frank Zappa and Ween.
