The DRX
The DRX is the avant-rock vehicle of New York drummer/composer Dan Romans, active since 2008 with a rotating cast of collaborators drawn from Kayo Dot, Psalm Zero, Buke & Gase and other Brooklyn/Rochester experimental circles. Across Thesis (2009), the Deepening Hole EP (2011) and the concept album Throughout Within (2016, Nefarious Industries), the project layers polyrhythmic riffs, hardcore breakdowns, horns/strings/choir and synthesized drones under Romans' despondent, catharsis-driven songwriting. The sound sits at the progressive/avant-metal edge of art-rock — dense, horn-inflected and structurally restless rather than genre-orthodox.

Blind Idiot God is an instrumental trio formed in 1982 in St. Louis, fusing noise rock, dub, funk, free jazz and metal; Greg Ginn signed them to SST Records after hearing their demo. Their 1988 album Undertow was produced by Bill Laswell and featured saxophonist John Zorn, and the full band performed on Laswell's Praxis album Sacrifist (1993) alongside Buckethead, Bootsy Collins and Yamatsuka Eye. Khanate drummer Tim Wyskida joined in 2001 and remains the band's drummer through their 2015 reunion album Before Ever After.

XHOHX are a duo who describe their own music, in their own words, as "Chaotic and Organic No Wave, Poly-rhythmic and Atonal Music" — which is both accurate and about as much help as it sounds. Ramon Ribas Coca plays guitar and programs the drums, Oregolakatzor plays bass, and the result is heavy avant-rock built out of angular, disharmonic riffing that never repeats a bar it could complicate instead. Reviewers reach for Ruins, the Flying Luttenbachers and Univers Zero, and hear an industrial edge that comes from the rhythmic construction rather than from any electronics — the programmed drums are deliberately played straight, close enough to a human kit that the review noting them also notes you cannot really tell. Growled shouts surface between the instrumental passages. Two albums in eleven years, then a 2013 split with Ahleuchatistas recorded either side of the Atlantic, and not much since.

Testament are a Bay Area thrash metal band formed in Berkeley in 1983 (as Legacy, renamed Testament in 1986), long regarded as one of the leading second-wave thrash acts alongside the genre's 'Big Four.' Built around constants Chuck Billy (vocals) and Eric Peterson (guitar), with jazz-trained lead guitarist Alex Skolnick, they broke out with The Legacy (1987) and Practice What You Preach (1989) before pushing into heavier, death-metal-inflected territory on Low (1994) and Demonic (1997). Drummer Gene Hoglan — also of Strapping Young Lad, Dark Angel and Death — anchored the band from 2011 to 2022, recording Brotherhood of the Snake (2016) and Titans of Creation (2020) and becoming their longest-serving drummer.

Wetnurse was a Manhattan, New York City experimental metal/hardcore band active in the 2000s, releasing a self-titled album (2004) and Invisible City (2008, Seventh Rule Recordings, produced and mixed by Martin Bisi at BC Studios). Their sound fused early-hardcore urgency, AmRep-style noise-rock abrasion, death-metal heft, and classic-rock melodicism, with the band citing touchstones like Sonic Youth, Helmet, Voivod, Botch, Unsane, and Mr. Bungle. Drummer Curran Reynolds also later joined Today Is the Day; vocalist Gene Fowler has since passed away.

Deli Creeps is guitarist Buckethead's formative avant-garde/funk-metal band, formed in Claremont/San Francisco in the early 1990s and built around Maximum Bob's manic vocals and Buckethead's already-virtuosic, genre-hopping lead guitar. Their sole album, Dawn of the Deli Creeps (2005), compiles re-recorded demo-era material and functions as an origin document for Buckethead's later solo vocabulary — several of its riffs and songs were repurposed on his solo records. Mike Patton has praised the band, and it sits at the root of the Bay Area Buckethead/Praxis/Primus-adjacent avant-metal cluster.

Neuma emerged in 2001 from the ashes of Polish prog/noise-metal cult act Kobong, and by 2006's 'Weather' had built a sound around crushing, djent-like bass vamps under free-jazz saxophone improvisation. Reviewers compare its skronking, Colin Stetson-esque sax runs to a slow-motion 'jazz drone,' with fuzzy guitars splitting the difference between post-punk and post-hardcore. It reads as a sparser, stranger cousin to the metal/jazz-fusion lineage of bands like Estradasphere.

Giraffe Tongue Orchestra is an American rock/alternative-metal supergroup founded in 2012 by guitarist Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan, melding hard rock and progressive metal. Its lineup drew members from various established acts: Brent Hinds of Mastodon (guitar), William DuVall of Alice in Chains (vocals), Thomas Pridgen of The Mars Volta (drums), and bassist Pete Griffin (Dethklok, Zappa Plays Zappa). The band released its debut LP, Broken Lines, on September 23, 2016 via Party Smasher Records, reaching #85 on the Billboard 200.

Unnatural Ways is guitarist/vocalist Ava Mendoza's power trio with bassist Tim Dahl and drummer Sam Ospovat, formed in 2012 and drawing on noise rock, free jazz and metal for a raw, heavy, unpredictable sound built around Mendoza's angular, distorted guitar work. The band's second album, We Aliens, came out on John Zorn's Tzadik label in 2016, and Mendoza herself has a deep pedigree in Zorn's orbit, having played his 1984 'game piece' Cobra and recorded in his Arcana series. She's also a recurring guest on saxophonist Jon Irabagon's improv-noise 'I Don't Hear Nothin' But the Blues' series alongside guitarist Mick Barr.

Upsilon Acrux is an American avant-progressive / math rock band founded in 1998 by guitarist Paul Lai, who started the group near San Diego before relocating to Los Angeles. Built on interlocking twin-guitar counterpoint, odd meters and a frequently rotating cast of players around Lai as the sole constant, they trade in a dense, athletic, largely instrumental 'brutal prog' indebted to King Crimson and Japanese noise-rock forebears like Ruins. They released their most widely heard albums, Galapagos Momentum (2007) and Radian Futura (2009), on the Maryland avant-rock label Cuneiform Records.

Black Engine is a one-off 2007 Italian collaboration uniting three members of experimental jazzcore trio Zu - Luca T. Mai (baritone/alto sax), Massimo Pupillo (bass) and Jacopo Battaglia (drums) - with guitarist/producer Eraldo Bernocchi. Their sole album, 'Ku Klux Klowns' (Wallace Records, 2007), pushes Zu's usual free-jazz/noise-rock language into heavier, doom-drone-adjacent territory with Bernocchi's guitar riffing layered atop the horn-led chaos. The project effectively works as a heavier-guitar-driven Zu side outlet and presaged Bernocchi and Pupillo's later duo Obake.
