Laster is a Dutch avant-garde black metal trio from Utrecht, active since 2012, that has steadily dissolved conventional black metal form into a hybrid of art rock, new wave, and shoegaze. Their Dutch-language lyrics dwell on love, distress, and identity across albums like Ons vrije fatum and Andermans mijne. In 2023 they toured Europe as support for Japanese avant-garde metal veterans Sigh.

Altari is an Icelandic black metal band whose debut album Kröflueldar, released via Svart Records in April 2023, took roughly nine years to complete. The record folds clean, melodic guitar leads and influences from Blue Öyster Cult, Killing Joke and Interpol into a black metal foundation, co-produced by Stephen Lockhart (aka Wann), a central engineer/producer figure in Reykjavík's black metal scene.

Ebonillumini is a female-fronted avant-garde/gothic black metal project from London, founded in 2008 by Meads of Asphodel guitarist James Tait ('The Monk Marshall') alongside vocalist Christina Poupoutsi ('The Maiden'). Across The Ebon Channel (2008), Pacificum (2013) and Arktos (2015) the band frames each record as a concept-driven geographic voyage, pairing Poupoutsi's operatic, 'musky' clean vocals against Tait's harsh growls, with reviewers noting jazz-inflected song structures, neo-classical/symphonic orchestration and black-metal-rooted riffing shading into psychedelia and Viking-metal tropes. Production has drawn criticism for burying the heavier material under brickwalled mastering and overlong running times.

Elagabalus is a Baltimore, Maryland avant-garde black metal duo formed in 2014 by Dustin Swanson (bass, vocals, synth) and Ben Price (drums, vocals, guitar). Across Damnatio Memoriae (2015), Antiquarian Black MIDI (2017), and Dark Money (2018), the project layers synthesizers over black-metal instrumentation, drawing press comparisons to Neurosis, My Bloody Valentine, Godflesh, and Nirvana. Dark Money is tagged 'doomgaze/shoegaze' on Bandcamp and explores themes of financial corruption and power through a cinematic, synth-heavy sound.

A one-person Saudi Arabian project that has released an extraordinarily prolific run of blackgaze/atmospheric-black-metal albums since 2024, pairing raw black metal with synth textures and long-form ambient passages. Track and album titles swing between clinical/medical imagery and Arabic-language poetry, giving the catalog a disorienting, diaristic quality. Lengsel are a Norwegian progressive/avant-garde 'unblack' metal band formed in 1995, whose 2000 debut Solace won a following for its atmospheric, experimental take on black metal. The project is affiliated with the Cërcle Mortüaire collective (alongside Feuille Morte, Mortuaire, Olatom Amespïrïa and others) and released albums such as Hélas ! Ætheria Conscientia is a progressive black metal quintet from Nantes, France, formed in 2016, known for using saxophone as a core instrumental voice rather than an occasional flourish. Across three albums — 'Tales From Hydhradh' (2018), 'Corrupted Pillars of Vanity' (2021), and 'The Blossoming' (2024) — the band pursues a continuing science-fiction concept about humanity fleeing a ruined Earth, blending black metal with progressive rock, jazz, ambient, and psychedelic textures. Critics place them at the crossroads of Oranssi Pazuzu, Mastodon, and Enslaved.

Al-Kamar is a Japanese blackgaze/depressive black metal project, essentially the solo work of a musician known as Tsukisima, begun in 2010 as a doujin circle arranging Touhou Project music before evolving into an atmospheric post-black/shoegaze sound that incorporates Vocaloid/voice-synthesis vocals. Live performances feature supporting musicians; the self-titled 2022 album marked a deliberate return to black metal roots.

London's Sea Mosquito wrap raw black metal in ambient synth haze and echo-drenched production, favoring atmospheric wash over riff-forward songwriting - tremolo guitar and drums function as background texture behind cascading, almost lead-like drumming. Their 2025 album Majestas (I, Voidhanger Records) explores religious ecstasy across cultures, with harsh vocals occasionally giving way to spoken passages in English and Arabic. They sit closer to psychedelic/atmospheric black metal than to the death-metal-adjacent avant-garde acts on this chart, but the noise-and-texture-first approach is exactly the kind of unorthodox BM the label built its name on.
