WHY THOSE SCORES

  • Doom 6Bandcamp self-tags include 'Doom'; slow, dirge-like pacing across very long tracks (up to 16:47) is consistent with doom-metal weight.
  • Drone 7The artist's own bio calls it 'a Christian instrumental drone/doom/dark ambient music project'; track lengths up to 16:47 and a self-applied 'Drone Metal' tag indicate sustained-tone, minimally-moving composition.
  • Ambient 6Self-tagged 'Ambient' and 'Dark Ambient'; instrumental, atmospheric, texture-over-riff structure per the bio.

    The Mountain King
    DroneDoomAmbient

German experimental/noise act (Mainz) built around destructive recording techniques rather than conventional songwriting — their Radiant Eulogy series deliberately degrades master tapes (sun exposure, physical decay) to bury heavy doom riffs under crackling, collapsing signal. Prolific (37+ Bandcamp releases since 2013) across noise, post-metal, drone, doom, and post-rock with electronic/tape elements. Sits closer to power-electronics/drone art-noise than conventional metal songcraft.

    Opium Warlords
    DroneDoomAmbient

Opium Warlords is the solo-turned-trio outlet of Sami Albert Hynninen (Albert Witchfinder of Reverend Bizarre), stretching doom metal into extended drone-riff meditations with minimal percussion. Since 2010 he has been joined by drummer Erkki Virta and keyboardist Laura Länsimäki, though the project remains built around Hynninen's distorted bass and bleak conceptual framing. Six albums deep on Svart Records, the band trades hooks for duration, dissolving riffs into noise and silence.

Jodis is a minimal drone/doom trio featuring Aaron Turner (vocals), James Plotkin (guitar) and Tim Wyskida (drums). The band is a modern exploration of restrained sonic minimalism and tonal/textural density, coupling Plotkin and Wyskida's sparse, mercurial rhythmic interplay with Turner's monolithic ambience and distressed vocals. They released two albums on Hydra Head Records: Secret House (2009) and Black Curtain (2012).

Mare Erythraeum is a Hungarian solo project (credited only to 'Z') that began in 2009 as disharmonic, industrial-tinged black metal before drifting into pure dark ambient/drone. Its sole full-length, Ophitae (2018, NGC Prod), collects three side-long instrumental pieces actually recorded back in 2010 and reissued nearly a decade later as '49 minutes of ethereal, floating space dark ambient about the order of the serpent.' The project is currently on hold.

Ufomammut are an Italian power trio formed in 1999 in Tortona, dealing in a signature strain of psychedelic sludge that spans doom, stoner, sludge and drone metal. Their music favors lengthy songs built on repeated heavy riffs, droning vocals and a heavy use of synths and sound effects, staged live with synchronized psychedelic visuals by founders Poia and Urlo's Malleus art collective. Their most recent studio albums — including Fenice (2022) and Hidden (2024) — appear on Neurosis's Neurot Recordings.

The lineup draws members from Beijing noise-rock scene acts Carsick Cars and Soviet Pop.

Earth is an American band formed in 1989 in Olympia, Washington, led by guitarist Dylan Carlson, who is regarded as a father of drone. Their 1993 album Earth 2 is recognized as a pioneering work of drone metal, built from heavily distorted, minimalist, slow-moving guitar. After a late-1990s hiatus, the band re-emerged in the 2000s with a cleaner, twangy desert-rock minimalism on albums like Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method (2005) and The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull (2008), with Carlson and drummer Adrienne Davies as its core duo.

    Sum Of R
    DroneDoomAmbient

Reto Mäder's long-running Sum Of R has cycled through several lineups since 2008; the current Swiss-Finnish incarnation with Marko Neuman (vocals) and Jukka Rämänen (drums) pushes furthest into ritual drone-doom territory on 2025's Spectral, an 'acoustic séance' of tape manipulation, mellotron, and psychedelic doom built around sustained tones rather than riffs. The record pulls in a small constellation of scene names as guests — Juho Vanhanen of Oranssi Pazuzu, Vicotnik of Dødheimsgård, and G. Stuart Dahlquist of Burning Witch/Goatsnake — placing the band at a crossroads of drone, post-metal, and avant-black circles, even as Mäder's other projects (Ural Umbo, Hexvessel, Dark Buddha Rising) sit outside this atlas.
