Fantômas is the avant-metal supergroup Mike Patton assembled in the wake of Faith No More's breakup, uniting him with Melvins guitarist Buzz Osborne, Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn, and ex-Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. The band treats metal as raw material for conceptual games: a debut sung as pages from imaginary sci-fi comics, The Director's Cut warping horror-film themes into grindcore-tinged miniatures, and Delìrium Còrdia stretching one queasy piece across an entire album around the concept of surgery without anesthesia. Whiplash dynamics, cartoon-splice editing, and Patton's wordless vocal acrobatics made it a cornerstone of the experimental metal canon, with every record released on Patton's own Ipecac label.

Tomahawk is the Nashville-formed supergroup that pairs Mike Patton's shape-shifting vocals with Duane Denison's razor-wire guitar, born in 1999 when the two started swapping tapes after a Mr. Bungle tour stop. With John Stanier's piston-precise drumming and bass from Kevin Rutmanis (later Trevor Dunn), the band deals in taut, noirish alternative/avant-garde metal that splits the difference between The Jesus Lizard's angular menace and Patton's cinematic weirdness. Five albums on Patton's Ipecac Recordings — from the 2001 debut through 2021's Tonic Immobility — make it one of the label's flagship acts.

The Deserts of Traun (stylized TRAUN) is an experimental, multi-genre metal project from Santa Barbara, California, founded and largely composed by drummer Dave Murray, formerly of Estradasphere. Its self-titled 2003 debut features Murray on numerous instruments alongside contributions from Estradasphere guitarist Jason Schimmel and others, blending metal, jazz, progressive rock and soundtrack styles. Murray later carried the project's polyrhythmic-metal sensibility into High Castle Teleorkestra.

Umbah is the solo avant-garde industrial death metal/cybergrind project of UK multi-instrumentalist Cal Scott (formerly guitarist of grind act Necrosanct), running since 1990 and released largely through I, Voidhanger Records. Extremely prolific (dozens of albums across sci-fi/absurdist concept releases like 'Continuum,' 'Xominod,' and 'Obliticus'), the project fuses industrial death/grind with harsh electronics and jazz-tinged arrangements into what reviewers call 'techno-organic metal.'

Vvon Dogma I is the Montreal project of 9-string bassist Chaoth (Frederick F.), formerly of avant-garde metal act Unexpect, formed after that band's split to keep exploring extended-range bass tunings and genre-collision songwriting. With Kevin Alexander (drums), Yoan MP (guitar), and Blaise Borboën (synths/strings/production), they mix progressive/djent metal with industrial-electronic and vocoder-heavy glitch textures — their 2023 album The Kvlt of Glitch even includes a Radiohead cover and was co-produced with Cryptopsy's Chris Donaldson. Some material started life as unfinished Unexpect ideas before being reworked into the new project.

Don Salsa was an experimental avant-prog/avant-metal band formed in 1993 while its members were in high school in the South Bay region of Los Angeles, active until 1997. The band recorded a single album, 'Koolaide Moustache in Jonestown,' released May 21, 1997, recorded over nearly three years in a warehouse on a primitive digital multi-track recorder, with an opening track exceeding 30 minutes. Core members Tim Smolens and Jason Schimmel went on to form Estradasphere, and Schimmel later became a founding member of Atomic Ape and an active member of Secret Chiefs 3.

Solo dissonant death metal/grindcore project from Todesfelde, Germany, formed in 2022 (https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ryona_Hime/3540547934) and run by producer 'The Popu,' who writes, records, mixes, masters and illustrates under genre tags including 'animegrind,' 'weebgrind,' 'dungeongrind' and 'trancegrind' (https://ryonahime.bandcamp.com/album/ritv-s-hrapta). Releases such as 'Ritvōs Hrapta' (2023) pull in guest musicians - clarinetist Yumi Sakata, guitarist/vocalist Alice Simard of Filesharemaiden, and vocalists Billy Qvarnström, Jesse Agiomamitis and Starlix - wrapping technically demanding, fretless-bass-driven dissonance in an anime-inflected aesthetic.

Monastat 7 was a Cheyenne, Wyoming grindcore trio whose 1993/94 debut 'Now Available Without A Prescription' — produced by Dan Lilker of Brutal Truth and reissued on Relapse — paired technical cybergrind riffing with heavy sampling, comedy/rap interludes and skits (a track built around a grocery-store clerk's price-check announcement over the PA). The lineup leaned into avant-garde instrumentation for a 1993 grind band, with Henkaboo E. Boltz credited on guitar, programming AND violin alongside Dr. Stat3's bass/keyboards. A 1995 follow-up EP, 'Operatic Genitalia Of 7 Bowel Movements,' continued the project on the same Japanese DIY label, Lost Frog Productions.

Waltari is a Finnish experimental/crossover metal band formed in Helsinki in 1986 and led by principal songwriter Kärtsy Hatakka, notorious for splicing progressive, alternative and extreme metal with hip-hop, techno, industrial, pop and punk. Their conceptual ambition peaks in staged productions like the orchestra-backed Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die! Death Metal Symphony in Deep C (1996) and Evangelicum (1999), the latter incorporating ballet, light shows and a guest turn from Nightwish's Tarja Turunen. Alumni include Sami Yli-Sirniö (Kreator), Roope Latvala (Children of Bodom) and Janne Parviainen (Ensiferum).

Buckethead (Brian Patrick Carroll) is an American guitarist from the San Francisco Bay Area, famous for performing in a white mask and a KFC bucket and for one of the most prolific solo discographies in music, numbering hundreds of albums. His playing spans thrash, fingerpicking, slap and avant-improv, and he conceives much of his output as soundtracks for rides at his imaginary amusement park, Bucketheadland. He released his 1992 debut on John Zorn's Avant label and that same year became the guitarist of Bill Laswell's supergroup Praxis.
